Hey Gang,

What frustrates you most about blogging? Is it coming up with a topic to write about? Writing? Laying out your blog?

Visitors? Too many people visiting or lack there of? Spammers?

I tell you what bothers me the most and it's pretty silly, I'll admit.

I write at a lot of political forums and on here and I have an RSS feed that tells people about the new topics I write about.

But do you know where the majority of people come from when they visit my blog, The Times Observer? It's not a political forum or on here.

It's at a Superman Web site that I post at sometimes. I should be grateful that I'm getting lot of hits, but really, it would be nice if I get a lot more visits from different places too.

So, what frustrates you about blogging?

    Trying to find direction.

I hate trying to find direction. No matter if I'm writing a news story or a column, writing the lead -- that's the first paragraph to the non-journalists out there -- can be tough for me sometimes.

I can picture what I want to say for the rest of the story/column but sometimes starting it is a bit tough.

the thing that bothers me the most is letting posts sit as drafts. sometimes i make 3 different drafts because i let the posts sit when i should just be posting how i felt it w the emotions and thoughts i wrote it with. sometimes trying to make something too good backfires and takes away from what you think it should be, and turns it into what you think ppl want to see from you.

You know what I hate? Working hard on a column and it's on a tough topic and it turns out bad. But sometimes I write on an unimportant topic and the column turns out great. Funny how that works out sometimes.

I would say that having to do anything with "promoting" my blog is frustrating. I'm not talking about going to blogs and leaving comments, because I'll do that naturally.

I'm talking about signing up for a dozen or so websites to try getting some attention to your work, but it results in nothing.

My least favorite part of blogging.

Oh and now add to that smart A** answers on these forums to legit questions.

      SECOND THAT!!

Blogger tech support is the worst. IN the top right hand corner they should substitute the word "help," with, "Need a little frustration?"
  6. mizzeboni
Promoting for me would be the most frustrating because it feels like an on-going task. I swear that it feels like an uphill battle even though it has paid off, not VERY well, but enough to satisfy me. Its also frustrating working on one of my blogs (livinthefablife.blogspot.com) because its more towards fashion and I research A LOT for it and then its like nobody reads or comments. SO thats whats the most frustrating to me
    1. agapelife
Agreed, especially when one has put much work and research into it. I even ask questions as in my latest post to have a dialogue with my readers but the response is pathetic.
  7. Timesobserver
PhoenixRyzing and Mizzeboni: Amen to that.

Promoting the blog is frustrating to no end and you're right: I try to ping my blog to some many other places, like Technorati and Ping-O-Matic and I get nothing much in return.

And I know what you mean, DCarroll about Blogger tech support. I must have e-mailed them 10 times last fall because some idiot spammed my Times Observer blog (when it was on Blogger)on purpose and no matter how many times I sent an e-mail to Blogger or Google (which owns everything now), I never got a human to reply to me.

(My misadventures with Blogger can be found my July 15th column in TO.)

I'm with you bloggers. IMO promotion is the most frustrating part of blogging.

Mostly the fact that I'm not rich and famous yet...

I personally enjoy your smart-a** answers to legit questions. I'd choose frivolity and laughter over productivity and forehead wrinkles any day.

...I suspect that's why I'm not rich or famous.

Not much, so far. I'm very pleased with the friendships I've made. I find the forum discussions a little prickly sometimes. People forget that an opinion is just an opinion.

People forget that an opinion is just an opinion.

It sometimes seems that it's easy to forget to focus on and argue the points and steer clear of becoming emotionally involved.

spammers. I'm so sick of people leaving comments for the soul purpose of self-promotion. Yeah, I know you want people to see your blog, so do I, but no, I don't want to do a link exchange with you. It's just irritating. I love interesting blogs, I have several that i read regularly, but self promotion like that is a deterrent.
    1. Timesobserver
I know what you mean. I don't mind someone writing a comment about what I wrote and at the end sticking in their link to their own blog. Because I feel they are still contributing to my blog by writing something meaningful about it.

But I do hate when they just put in the lackluster: "Hi, nice blog. I like what you wrote. My link is at xyz.com"

Hell, I could write about Hitler kicking old ladies down the steps and that I think he should have done more and I would probably still have some idiot writing about how he likes my blog and wants me to visit his.
  11. amesplaza
exactly. I'm likely to visit your blog if you leave a meaningful comment on my blog. But if it's obviously a standard copy/paste message posted on fifty different blogs then i'm going to delete your post and ignore you.

    Internet/platform problems.

After writing a couple of posts that were hard work and having them disappear into the ether, I started writing my blogs in Word and cutting and pasting them into the blog software. Good thing, too, as I've had posts disappear as recently as last month.

I am presently locked out of my blog if I try to access it from IE and there is simply NO way to get help from Blogger. I considered changing to a WordPress blog, but I don't want to be a programmer and apparently that's a prerequisite to using that platform.

The technology is mature...this should be a LOT easier!
    1. cindygeenotes
I've used both Blogger and Wordpress. I prefer Wordpress. You absolutely do not have to be a programmer to use WP. (I do a Bob Basic blog and have had no trouble with Wordpress - it's dead simple.)

I think any material you wish to keep should be backed up elsewhere on your local hard drive or an external drive. You never know when something can crash or be accidentally deleted.
    2. cindygeenotes
...and here I almost posted a duplicate comment...just goes to show that things can happen unexpectedly.
    3. Timesobserver
I'm not a big fan of Blogger ever since September. Some idiot flagged my Times Observer blog as spam (check out the July 15 column for details) and every time I had to post some a column, I had to put a code in it.

Interestingly enough, once the presidential elections were over, my problem went away.

That was the final straw for me and since I went back to school for Web design, I decided to remake The Times Observer on my own. So far, I'm pleased with the results.

    When the server is down...
  14. ismsandologies
I agree with every blogger who hates promoting. Supposedly a necessity, most days it feels like yelling into the void.
  15. JessicaMaybury
I'm not sure I really know how to sell myself or my blog. I always feel like I'm going about it arseways. IMO, anyway, the most frustrating thing about blogging is trying to stay on topic! My blog is meant to be about writing and music, but a few weeks ago I posted about alphabeti spagetti....
  16. JessicaMaybury
ALSO it's the lack of followers. My heart just lifts right up when I see that someone's commented but it doesn't happen very often.
    1. Timesobserver
I know what you mean. I hate when there are a lack of followers.

I hate it when there are a good number of followers but they won't go beyond your first post and they don't leave a comment or even do your poll.

It would be nice to see what your followers think about the topic you wrote about.

blogging is never frustrating...as long as you know what you want and you are happy with it. it's like life. if you want to be happy then you have to kick meaning out of the door. if you want meaningful life then you have to kill happiness.finding the balance is what's hard.

The thing that is bothersom at the moment is that all of my posts are about murder/suicide in the Atlanta area, and all I'm getting is these damn shark/miami ads from adsense. This is due to the fact that my first post was about two idiots trying to sell a shark that they caught to fish markets in downtown Miami. But I took the post down that day and still, nothing on murder, no ads about suicide,(suicide prevention). There seems to be no end to the damn shark/miami ads.

Nothing frustrates me about blogging, I just see blogging as being all about learning new things and new challenges that have to be overcome on the road to making my blog huge.......it is a total buzz...
  20. MissSuzie
People who read two or three posts and think they now know me well enough to send hateful emails. I hate having to sit down and whip up a nice reply that sums up "kiss my @ss" as rudely as possible.

I make myself laugh too hard.

I find that blogging can be time consuming when you consider the time that goes into writing a post, promoting it and then reaching out to readers. Anything worthwhile and valuable takes time though.
