Topics: shameless blog promotion
Share them please. I personally learned how to optimize my title tags, how to integrate referral ads and inline ads from google. Hope to learn more in September.

I've learned that there are billions of blogs out there and it is extremely hard for yours to be seen. I'm going to keep trying though!

I've learned the Open Directory still apparently IS taking new submissions because mine finally got accepted yesterday. (A year ago when I'd originally submitted things looked very grim over there.)

That when I use my groups (post something and then leave my blog address) that I am to get a lot more traffic then when I don't. I still don't get near the comments that I would like but that's ok..

I'm learning that you get what you give. I've always tried to put out quality content, but it's more than that. If you want readers to keep coming back, you need to get out and be interested in what they are doing also.
That's what I'm doing today actually... it's a fun day just checking out blogs, commenting, meeting new friends and the like.
Have a great long weekend

I have learned that words are tools. You can either heal or harm with them.
I posted what I considered to be a funny link on a blog today because I thought the site owner would appreciate it - it was in keeping with the post he had made. However, it was met with downright sarcasm, which if I'm honest really hurt my feelings because the link really was funny. It was plain that the person concerned who wrote the sarcastic response hadn't even clicked the link to look at it and instead had presumed the content.
That led me to come to a second conclusion. Those blogs with large followings, generally seem to have a tight 'community' of their own and coming along and posting new things can be a little unacceptable... even though we're all here to publicise our writings. I felt like an outsider today (and yes, this was a BlogCataloger).
Generally though, my experience of blogs and blogging is that some people hate it and some people love it; some people love to see what you have to say and others can't be bothered listening. I'm reminded of the words of Don Miguel Ruiz
books.google.co.uk/books?id=9tNaAAAACAAJ&dq=don+miguel+ruiz&ei=1mHYRtu2Fojm...
1) Always speak the truth
2) Always do your best
3) Never take anything personally
4) Don't make any assumptions
:o)

Nim, I can undertsand exactly where your coming from, 3 years ago I felt the same, especially in and around psychic websites and forums, most where, how shall we say...a bit clicky,so you did always feel a bit of an outsider, I joined quite a few but felt there was either a feeling that I was a threat because I had my own views, or you would find your post deleted.
so much so I started my own website and forums, that was 3 years ago and many of those I tried to join or post with have gone those that are still around are either gone commerical or have stagnated (mine has now grown beyond all expectations).
I suppose being in a niche interest area makes it hard work but have put in 1000's of hours building it and the forums are steadly incraesing in membership.
The blog I only started as an add on.
Your list Nim is perfect and should be addopted by all bloggers and website owners, we could could it 'Nim's 4 ways to survive blogging

Okay! this might be a big list, but helpful too!
Do comment on lot of blogs as possible. It's like leaving a signature stamp so others can see your blog/profile
Hoping to learn more!

A great thread here, good skills..
We've learnt to say no to random requests to links, stumbles, mumbles, fumbles and whatever else the next click fad is UNLESS is relevant to our blog then we'll feature the blog, entice our regulars to look at someone elses which is fine by us which leads to links anyway.
Comments are the key - links and ranking means far less to us flowers.
We also had our first complaint from someone who ordered flowers from our site and they died in 6 days. The flowers, not the person. Anyway we replaced them without hesitation complete with a full refund so they got 2 bunches for free. This was a lesson learnt on the blog as we had to deal with the complain and will post about his publically. It has since led to more flowers from the same customer because of the way it was handled.
Same with the free flowers contests we hold - they cost us $50 per shot but people come back and send flowers from our site so it's getting there!
The same applied to offensive blog posts, comments and content - you won't please everyone and have to have your own rules!
Hope these examples help others in whatever your blog or e biz is about...
Cheers.

I gave up BlogCatalog for good reasons last spring et all and decided to come back August 26th (new management) and have been here ever since. I've learned that my productivity has decreased in my blogging as I've been having waaaaaaaay too much fun in here! :Pttfffftftf

Peter, thanks for your response. Those words aren't mine though - they're Don Miguel Ruiz'. The book I posted is basically a fuller explanation of how to achieve those four things. I try to apply them to life as well as writing.
As for the original question, I've also discovered that sometimes it seems to be 'hip' to write about either negative, controversial or deep and meaningful stuff. This makes me wonder whether bloggers actually think the things they do, or whether they do it just to get a site hit. Personally for me, if I like a blog and the way a writer is writing, it indicates that I'd like to learn more. If the post on the main page isn't in keeping with other things the blogger posts, I probably won't go back. -
I hosted my first author on virtual book tour this month. I learned how to work with authors, market the appearance, monitor comments and feedback, and help her have the best experience possible. Incidentally, we logged 1,926 page views that day, my highest by about 100 to date. It was a lot of work, but I learned a lot. I have another book tour author appearing in the near future, so the lessons I learned from this one should make the next one easier.
