My sleeping has been all off whack and nothing has helped. If I take sleeping pills I am out the entire next day. I just lay in bed, and my eyes don't register I need to sleep. I am up til 3-5am every night.

I just need some things I could possibly try before I sleep.

Eat before you sleep. People say it makes your fat, but it will knock you right out.

Well I get off work at 11pm, and I always eat. I know I am sleepy and need to go to bed but I just can't. I am beginning to think it's just insomnia. :/

Do you snore? Some people have sleep apnea which causes them to wake up in the middle of the night.

I have no idea if I snore, I don't think I do. But I would have to get to sleep first for that to occur.

Sex makes me sleepy. If you don't have a partner, I think there is a way you can manage by yourself. That's what I hear anyway.

Yeah, I may or may not have tried that before.

Reading the Bible, proven effective in making you sleep almost instantly!

haha I don't read period. I have tried reading to sleep, doesn't work either.

It's hard to explain how I don't sleep. I just need something that won't take me out for the entire next day and I am set.

Nothing helps me sleep. I have to take a decision to sleep. Maybe instead of sleeping pills just something to calm down a bit and relax, read a bit and sleep will hopefully come.

Listening to the great voices of Dame Joan Sutherland, Amelita Galli-Curci, and Mado Robin. At other times, piano recordings of master composers.

I am a partial insomniac (ADHD) so my mind is constantly whirring.

I have to start a "MOVIE" in my head to go to sleep.

I create it... I give myself a storyline, and I just keep going with the storyline - adding this, taking that away.

I make myself visualize everything - I even try to feel the warmth or coldness or sense the smells.

I get down to the minute details... And I just imagine the movie of whatever I want.

Eventually after laying there - I usually fall asleep somewhere in the middle of my movie....

I mean - I plot it out before I start thinking about it.

    For Example Tonight's Movie:

    In my head... LOL!

Plot: Boy meets girl - falls in love - but he's a spy. (I'm the girl - or sometimes I can choose to just be an observer, of course) He has to keep his identity a secret - and he has to do a couple of missions before he can retire - and if he wants to marry her, he has to earn her trust - after she accidentally finds out about his extra curricular job! Of course they fall in love, everything probably works out - etc.

So now, I just let the movie play out in my head - setting scenes - and letting my characters become alive in my head.

Eventually - I generally fall asleep - if I keep my mind focused.

Anyhow - that's how I MAKE myself fall asleep, if I'm having problems.

Hope that can help you - or at least give you some ideas about how to TRY to fall asleep.

    Good LUCK!

I've seen some people get sleepy after a heavy meal. I don't, but different strokes for different folks.

Maybe you aren't relaxed properly. I used to have trouble sleeping so I looked for relaxation techniques. A good one is to tense and relax each part of your body, one by one, starting with your toes and endinhg with your eyes, and then breathing in and out deeply.

Also, exercising before bed or reading a good book helps, and having the radio on or listening to ambient music.

Milk contains L-tryptophan, a proven soporific. Warming it makes it even more effective. Don't add chocolate, though, because it contains stimulants. You can add a few drops of flavouring, like vanilla, to improve the taste if you like.

Another sleep aid I have used effectively is decaffeinated coffee with a shot of brandy in it...worked well on my ex-husband, especially if I put in a double shot...

Hot toddies are relaxing, too. My favourite is pink lemonade, a teaspoon of honey and a shot of anejo rum or Southern Comfort, heated in the microwave and stirred until the honey dissolves.

I've had insomnia pretty bad lately.

Here's an effective technique: start with your feet, think about sending them to sleep. Eventually you will feel that they feel different, almost like they arent there. Then make more of your leg go to sleep. I normally nod off by the time I get to my knees.

This way, you are keeping your mind gently trained on 'sleep', without thinking 'ARGH, sleep sleep, why aren't I asleep' and then giving up.

Try the sleeping pills on the weekend if you can, to set a routine, and then go to sleep at that time.

Actually, I remember reading about a technique, it involves going to bed LATER, I'll find it for you now...

I can't find it, it involves sleeping later than you do now, to make you more used to falling asleep once you go to bed. I wouldn't try it without knowing in more detail.

Heres a picture of the alarm clocks I bought.

I decided to buy some over the counter sleep-aids, and bought a tonne of alarm clocks so I'd wake up in the morning. I was pretty determined. I think the insomna has gone away by itself.
