same here Epicharis and only family and two friends have my number. We only talk to confirm, send a message or arrange something.
What if mobile phones didn't exist? Well they didn't when I was growing up, we didn't even have a land line until I came to America. so sure I can live without a mobile phone, but why? It has served me well in emergency situations, and as a useful convenience.

Know many vegetarians, do you? You're always claiming that being a vegan or vegetarian makes you really unhealthy but that hasn't been my experience or the experience of any of my friends. Meat-eaters, though...they seem to universally have bad diets because they don't pay attention to what they are putting in their bodies.

Uh...I work for a dietitian, ok?
And veganism and vegetarianism are different, but both require considerable attention to making sure people get adequate protein, and micronutrients. Since most people are not dietitians and schools no longer teach nutrition as part of the regular curriculum (as they did when I was a kid), it is pretty safe to assume that the average person is not well educated on the subject of how (and which) amino acids combine to make up complete proteins, which amino acids must be eaten as the body cannot synthesize them, and why complete proteins are essential to health.
Without looking it up, do you know how many amino acids it takes to make up a complete protein and how many of them must be ingested? If you only ingest some of those necessary amino acids, does a partial protein form or no protein at all? If we all became vegetarians, what must you do to prevent kwashikor or marasmus in your children? And while many meat-eaters eat a lot of crap, too, at least they are getting proper protein...as are their children.
For more than two years I have spent more than 10 hours per week sourcing, analyzing, collating and typing up research for a highly-regarded dietitian...I'd have to be pretty stupid for the information not to stick. She has done projects on protein and amino acids, she has done projects on micronutrients, and she is currently do a masters on EFAs. I proof and edit her work and verify her resources. I probably read (and absorb) more information about human nutrition in a single month than most people do in a decade.
You aren't healthy just because you feel healthy. My late husband felt fine until he was 54, when he dropped dead of a ruptured aneurysm, caused by years of uncontrolled high blood pressure. That he "felt fine" had no bearing on his real health. If you do not ingest the foods your body needs to create complete proteins, it doesn't matter how you feel, you will not be healthy and eventually that can come back to haunt you in the form of health problems later on. In particular, vegetarians and vegans suffer higher rates of anaemia and inadequate bone density because they are doing it wrong!
There is more to being a vegetarian than to just stop eating meat and if you don't research it and do it right, not only can you damage your own health, if you do it to your kids you can create life long problems for them. There is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian if you research it and do it right, but most people don't bother to do that, it is too much trouble!

You may work for a dietitian but I've seen you spout nonsense on here repeatedly...especially your obsession with vegans not getting any B12 (you always seem to ignore me when I say that most soya alternatives are fortified with a synthetic B12). I don't think I'm healthy just because I might feel it...my doctor knows I am a vegan and has never advised me to change my diet because I have never had any problems related to a lack of protein or vitamins. My friends are the same...
Any unbalanced diet is unhealthy, but living on a diet of fatty meats carries many more health problems (and more severe) than not getting the right mix of vegetables and pulses. -
hey, no need for a personal attack epicharis. My daughter has been a vegetarian since she was 6 and my mum since she turned 50 and they are educated about nutrition. I am almost vegetarian, but not quite ( I like a bit meat now and again). What I do agree with Sweet violet is how important it is to be educated about being a vegetarian for the reasons she brings up.
In the end though it seems there are many people (meat eaters and vegetarians) not educated about nutrition, and consequently suffer health problems.

Life would slow to a crawl, including delivery of perishable foods, medications, and emergency services. Houses would burn down before the fire department got there, robbers would be gone before the police could arrive, accident victims would die before the paramedics could get there or get them to the hospital. People injured out in the boonies would die because of no life flights, and the costs of foods and services would soar because of a lack of rapid delivery.
It would not be a pretty thing.
I, on the other hand, would be waxing my saddle and hauling my riding boots out of storage...
