What if mobile phones doesn't exist, can you live without it?
    1. hatingtherain
      no, I'd die

or at least I'd want to
    2. celticmusicfan
i don't have a mobile phone for a month. but i got one yesterday
if music never existed? i'd die.
    3. braincatcher
I want to try without a phone for a month but my friends didn't agree. They need me.
    4. celticmusicfan
oh well i have a landline...and it kept ringing
    5. Epicharis
My phone is more frequently used as a clock than as a communication device! I don't really like talking on the phone so most of my conversations are arranging when and where to meet people.
    6. jafabrit
same here Epicharis and only family and two friends have my number. We only talk to confirm, send a message or arrange something.

What if mobile phones didn't exist? Well they didn't when I was growing up, we didn't even have a land line until I came to America. so sure I can live without a mobile phone, but why? It has served me well in emergency situations, and as a useful convenience.
    7. SweetViolet
I spent the first 55 years of my life without one, so I suppose I can go back to it without too much difficulty.
    8. ThriftShopRomantic
I live without one now. There are times it would be handy, but that's maybe once or twice a year, usually involving logistics and travel.
    9. melindaville
I'd miss my iPhone but I could definitely get along without it.

I was just up in Maine for a week with no cell phone, no Internet, no TV, etc--and it was actually heavenly.
    10. Onchong
I am not an advocate of mobile/cellphone. I can live without it!
  2. celticmusicfan
Ok let's start with you. what's your story on this.
  3. dcarroll
What if I never owned, and will never own, a mobile phone?
    1. braincatcher
they can reach you by railway and snail mail instead.

What if we visited an alien planet. Would they be afraid of us because they saw aliens?
    1. hatingtherain
Possibly. There are so many ways to go with that.
It would depend on a lot of things. If they had human-like emotions, how we approached them, etc.
  5. celticmusicfan
@braincatcher if we look like them they they would not be scare. which reminds me...you have alien eyes LOL.
    1. braincatcher
These are not alien eyes, this is done by trying to open your eyelid without opening your eyes. try it with a spectator coz' you can't see even if you're in front of a mirror.
  6. braincatcher
What if there is no god. (ads by Google gave me the idea.)
    1. SweetViolet
      Nothing would change.
    2. braincatcher
different religions will still be present?
  7. idealpinkrose
then our life is useless. What if all people don't have eyes?
  8. jafabrit
What if EVERYONE became a vegetarian?
    1. SweetViolet
We would have an epidemic of malnutrition world wide
    2. Epicharis
Global warming would be halted, for one! And there'd be less bowel cancer...and people would be better cooks...

      @SV
why would we have a malnutrition epidemic?
    3. SweetViolet
Because being a vegetarian and staying healthy requires a great deal more effort and knowledge than simply cutting meat out of the diet. Most people tend to skip that part and end up suffering from nutrient deficiencies.
    4. Epicharis
Know many vegetarians, do you? You're always claiming that being a vegan or vegetarian makes you really unhealthy but that hasn't been my experience or the experience of any of my friends. Meat-eaters, though...they seem to universally have bad diets because they don't pay attention to what they are putting in their bodies.
    5. jafabrit
Apart from the malnutrition aspect, what of the products we use from slaughtered animals other than for consumption. Somehow I have a feeling everyone being vegetarian might have some negative side effects we can't imagine.
    6. runningshoes
if we all went vegan/vegatarian more than 1 billion people would lose their source of income....
    7. jafabrit
WHat of the need for blood substitutes or boosters for blood transfusions, or medical grade lanolin?
    8. SweetViolet
Uh...I work for a dietitian, ok?

And veganism and vegetarianism are different, but both require considerable attention to making sure people get adequate protein, and micronutrients. Since most people are not dietitians and schools no longer teach nutrition as part of the regular curriculum (as they did when I was a kid), it is pretty safe to assume that the average person is not well educated on the subject of how (and which) amino acids combine to make up complete proteins, which amino acids must be eaten as the body cannot synthesize them, and why complete proteins are essential to health.

Without looking it up, do you know how many amino acids it takes to make up a complete protein and how many of them must be ingested? If you only ingest some of those necessary amino acids, does a partial protein form or no protein at all? If we all became vegetarians, what must you do to prevent kwashikor or marasmus in your children? And while many meat-eaters eat a lot of crap, too, at least they are getting proper protein...as are their children.

For more than two years I have spent more than 10 hours per week sourcing, analyzing, collating and typing up research for a highly-regarded dietitian...I'd have to be pretty stupid for the information not to stick. She has done projects on protein and amino acids, she has done projects on micronutrients, and she is currently do a masters on EFAs. I proof and edit her work and verify her resources. I probably read (and absorb) more information about human nutrition in a single month than most people do in a decade.

You aren't healthy just because you feel healthy. My late husband felt fine until he was 54, when he dropped dead of a ruptured aneurysm, caused by years of uncontrolled high blood pressure. That he "felt fine" had no bearing on his real health. If you do not ingest the foods your body needs to create complete proteins, it doesn't matter how you feel, you will not be healthy and eventually that can come back to haunt you in the form of health problems later on. In particular, vegetarians and vegans suffer higher rates of anaemia and inadequate bone density because they are doing it wrong!

There is more to being a vegetarian than to just stop eating meat and if you don't research it and do it right, not only can you damage your own health, if you do it to your kids you can create life long problems for them. There is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian if you research it and do it right, but most people don't bother to do that, it is too much trouble!

    9. SweetViolet
      Danged double posts!
    10. runningshoes
ok im sorry many many mnay more people than a billion will lose their source of income...the ENTIRE fishing industry, the ship making industry, the ENTIRE animal husbandry industry, the leather industry, the glue industry and even the bakery industry.
    11. Epicharis
You may work for a dietitian but I've seen you spout nonsense on here repeatedly...especially your obsession with vegans not getting any B12 (you always seem to ignore me when I say that most soya alternatives are fortified with a synthetic B12). I don't think I'm healthy just because I might feel it...my doctor knows I am a vegan and has never advised me to change my diet because I have never had any problems related to a lack of protein or vitamins. My friends are the same...

Any unbalanced diet is unhealthy, but living on a diet of fatty meats carries many more health problems (and more severe) than not getting the right mix of vegetables and pulses.
    12. dbowles1017
Just because some one eats meat doesnt mean they have an unbalanced or fatty diet.
    13. Epicharis
True...but it seems that more often than not people who eat anything eat crap.
    14. dbowles1017
The problem lies with the preparation and processing. You need fat in your diet. Its vital to proper body functioning. Your omega 3 & 6s. I could go on but im using my phone. It really just comes down to preperation and quantity.
    15. jafabrit
hey, no need for a personal attack epicharis. My daughter has been a vegetarian since she was 6 and my mum since she turned 50 and they are educated about nutrition. I am almost vegetarian, but not quite ( I like a bit meat now and again). What I do agree with Sweet violet is how important it is to be educated about being a vegetarian for the reasons she brings up.

In the end though it seems there are many people (meat eaters and vegetarians) not educated about nutrition, and consequently suffer health problems.
    16. Epicharis
There was no personal attack. SV has repeatedly claimed things that were not true and ignores people when they correct her. I was just pointing out an observation.
  9. amybyrd21
What if every one had no vehicle to get any where just a mule or horse. (the Amish do that here)
    1. jafabrit
We wouldn't get our mail or packages for a long time, and shipping larger items would be very expensive.
    2. SweetViolet
Life would slow to a crawl, including delivery of perishable foods, medications, and emergency services. Houses would burn down before the fire department got there, robbers would be gone before the police could arrive, accident victims would die before the paramedics could get there or get them to the hospital. People injured out in the boonies would die because of no life flights, and the costs of foods and services would soar because of a lack of rapid delivery.

It would not be a pretty thing.

I, on the other hand, would be waxing my saddle and hauling my riding boots out of storage...

What if benevolent aliens decided to move to earth?
    1. jafabrit
Would we even recognize them if we saw them?
    2. Epicharis
what if they were purple with green spots and eight fingers on each hand?
    3. runningshoes
maybe they would help me finish this HUGE pile of homework that I have piled up

They could also help me buy a new rolls-royce phantom for 10$
    4. dbowles1017
We would segregate them. They would have no rights. Then we would wage war against them due to different beliefs.
    5. jafabrit
I might think they are some form of street art
    6. braincatcher
"What if benevolent aliens decided to move to earth?"

      -We already did.
