Mom and Dad,

I don't understand this: we have no money at home because of all the debts in the nation, and now Obama and the Bankers will put even more debt so that we could consume but how will we go better since we got the first trouble because of these debts ? I'm only 5 years old maybe I have missed something ?

(I don't agree with all but the central idea of injecting even more debt is just common sense).

If all money is debt, time is debt.

My kids are too worried they'll miss the new Spongebob episode to worry about the state of the economy.

If that is how your kid talks, I think you have bigger problems with little Dameon

Children should be aware of things that go on around them...They should be allowed to ask questions, but it's really sad when they start dealing with adult problems...they have plenty of time for that!

Well it's because it's not only adult problem they are aware that it is THEIR problem for the future and parent just don't dare to ask them what they think. But Suzan Norman did and this were the surprising answers she got:

I will never forget the time I sat down with a class of eight- and nine-year-olds and asked them what their greatest fear was. I didn’t even say money fear—just plain old fear. One of the children stepped right up and flatly told me her biggest fear was that she would end up having to support her parents. I was of course stunned by this and asked why she felt that way. She said she constantly heard her parents arguing at night and her mother telling her father things like, “If you don’t stop buying all those expensive electronic gadgets we are going to end up in the poor house. And then who will support us?” But what truly scared me was when I asked the other kids if anybody else felt like this, nearly every one of them seemed to have a similar story.

That's kind of my point...They are worried because they have heard parents arguing or worrying about it. That should not be the way that children hear about it. Children do worry about money, but generally it's immediate and what is left in their money box. If children do hear news, dont let it be through an argument.

I am a teacher too...and I don't dismiss their questions, but I also don't go into the classroom with my problems or problems about the school. Young children need to learn to deal with their own childhood problems and know their parents are there for them and are not falling apart. If their parents are falling apart, so is the only world they know.

at five years old my children were more concerned with what was for dinner and whether it was bath night.

but if an older child asked me that then we'd talk it through.

My kids assume that Obama is some sort of movie star, because everyone was so excited about his for a while. The whole concept of politics is pretty silly to them, as they ask sensible questions like, "Why doesn't everyone agree on the best person for the job?" and "What does his color have to do with how well he can do his job?"

As for the economic crisis, we're pretty insulated here and the kids only hear bits and pieces. Hubby, on the other hand, asked me that very question and we had lengthy discussions about the credit market affecting his job in direct and intricate ways and how the bailout, if it worked, would likely save his job, at least in the short term, and whether that was worth the pain of paying it off in the long term.

After I get my degree in economy science than I may be able to give a proper answer.
