One definition might be a list of links (bookmarks, urls) to websites and blog sites that you read on a regular basis. Does that help?

Oddly, it is not a large pastry, to be eaten with a great deal of butter.

timethief gave a pretty good definition. You might also check out www.google.com/search?hl=en&pwst=1&defl=en&q=define:Blogroll&sa=X&oi=glossa...

There are many ways to make building a blogroll easier and more helpful to others.

I wrote a blog on blogrolls called "Pruning a Blogroll" here: rileycentral.net/wordpress/2008/03/22/pruning-a-blogroll/

Get fresh veggies and miracle whip. Freshly baked roll and prepare this dish by placing the veggies onto the roll, blog fashion. Enjoy.

I know that you want to find blogs that you would like to link to, particularly, blogs related to the subject matter of your own. I'm thinking that because you are new to blogging you may not understand how Technorati calculates.

The Technorati Top 100 shows the most popular 100 blogs based on Technorati Authority and Technorati Rank is calculated based on how far your blog is from the top. The blog with the hightest Technorati Authority is the #1 ranked blog.

“Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has.

It is important to note that we measure the number of blogs, rather than the number of links. So, if a blog links to your blog many times, it still only count as +1 toward your authority. Of course, new links mean the +1 will last another 180 days.” — Dorion Carroll, Technorati Weblog, May 5, 2007 technorati.com/weblog/2007/05/354.html

There are no real shortcuts to getting links. If you attract and keep readers they will link to your blog.

    (1) Write often and write well about interesting subjects so, other bloggers will be attracted to what you write, and comment and/or link to your posts.

    (2) Participate in blog carnivals. Blog carnivals list many blog posts submitted on a given topic. blogcarnival.com/bc/p_about.html

    (3) Technorati uses your categories as tags so be sure that the categories and tags that you choose to assign to each post are relevant to that post.

    (4) By posting tutorials or "how to" posts on subjects that you are well versed in and you will increase your traffic and your Technorati Authority. When you teach people how to do things in your blog, most are grateful and they may add you to their blogrolls.

    (5) Become a member of one or more social networks like Technorati, Blog Catalog, Mybloglog, Digg etc. and promote your blog.

Here are some other ways to lay a foundation for promoting your blog and increasing your readership
    A. Find Technorati on the web. Register and create an account, claim your blog(s), tag them, create a watchlist and register your favorite blogs. You will find that the site has excellent instructions to help you work through all the steps.

    B. Also be sure to register your blog so you get the attention of search engines. It is said that Google's directory comes straight from the DMOZ Directory so look into getting your blog site listed in it. The DMOZ, commonly known as the Open Directory Project has strict guidelines as to who is listed. Submission info can be found here.

"If your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data, such as AOL Search, Google, Netscape Search, Yahoo Search, and hundreds of other sites. We make updates of the data available weekly, but each partner has their own update schedule."

You should *not* submit your site to Google, Yahoo, and MSN more than once every 30 days.

Although Google says that manually submitting your pages to their index is unnecessary, they have an interface for you to do so. But don't be surprised if it takes months for Google to acknowledge your site's existence.MSN will seldom visit a website unless invited by submission. Yahoo frequents sites more than MSN but less than Google but will dramatically increase visits after submission.

Submit your site to only the top 40 search engines. Paste their code on your site and you will then receive emails asking to confirm your submissions.

    (6) Before you add a link you may want to use a page rank checker. There are many online like this one www.googlerankings.com/
You may also want to check the Authority and Page Rank for the blog at Technorati and you may want to use a bad neighborhood checker too www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm

    (7) Maintain an watch on your blogroll links (remember the 180 day or 6 month Technorati window). This post has links to broken links checkers, dead links checkers, reciprocal links checkers, etc. onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/03/12/wordpress-how-to-maintain-and-track-li...
