i think it has something to do with symmetry, rhythm and rhyme..
perhaps also detail and expression play a part..

In the eye of the beholder!

Or the other one that I like even better...

"Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them."

oh there you go, THREAD CLOSED! or is it ?...

      thread closed!
we all filter things through a subjective prism, which makes any generalized blanket concepts of beauty untenable.

someone, somewhere is listening to the beatles right now and thinking "this sucks!" or looking up at the cistine chapel and thinking "my kid coulda painted that!"
and so on and so on...

i don't know much about art, all i know is what i like...

      Rightly said.
      I totally agree.
It depands on how you see the things & different people see differently.

Not to be asinine, but what is NOT beautiful?... limited to things/people... not actions

Wait, I have a better answer: gael garcia bernal.

Sometimes I just don't know....have you ever been drawn to something but couldn't explain why? I don't think there's one recipe for beauty but I could be wrong.

Early morning sun coming through the window as it shines on my face. Everyday is beautiful.

There are no ugly things, nor beautiful things. Only ordinary things. Things in which light and shadows highlight, and perspectives distort.

the difference between a weed and a flower is a judgment

As others have said, beauty is very subjective. And beauty depends on what is important to you. Of course the ballet, flowers, sunsets, and the ocean are beautiful. But sometimes the least likely can be a thing of beauty as well. I remember one time, driving a taxi in Montana through a terrible blizzard--it was snowing so hard you could hardly see your hand in front of your face. I was terrified driving through 40 miles of tough mountain roads. There was nothing so beautiful as the tiny, one bedroom apartment that I came home to that night.

As far as people are concerned, we want to believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I'm afraid it is not.
Beauty is symmetry + quite a few other mathematical standards...
