What makes a band considered Indie?

I'm tempted to say: lack of money, and radio play but that sounds too cynical. I think I'll duck the question in favour of an anecdote.
I was once in a record store that had a section called 'pop' that included virtually every band/album you could think of. There was then a section labelled 'alternative/indie' that had ONE CD in it.
For some reason it was by "God Speed you Black Emperor." -
Depends. Indie can be a kind of genre of music, like indie rock or indie pop, or it can simply mean that the band is independent, i.e. not signed or backed by a big record label.
The big labels tend to want to sell as much as possible and therefore get involved in the production of the music to make it more sellable, keep the copyrights for the music, etc. (though there are exceptions, of course), whereas smaller indie labels care less about money and more about the music, giving the band more freedom to do their thing, usually letting the band keep all the rights. -
Indie is typically an artist or artists that are either unsigned or signed to an indie label. An indie label is a record company that in self funded mostly local and not widely marketed or funded through larger corporations.

Music which is not for everyone ear. Bands who want to keep status quo and keep popularity withing sertain community without going pop. Examples: Velvet Undeground, The Pixies, Sonic Youth... You can even add some big names here like: R.E.M. or Death Cab for Cutie since this bands stick to their style and don't follow modern trends.
