    You could learn something from their own website, though it presupposes knowledge of Catholicism: www.opusdei.org/. If you don't understand specific terms, try the Catholic Encyclopedia: www.newadvent.org/cathen/.

    Opus Dei, Meaning "Work of God" is a religious sect from the catholic arm that tends to have a strict and rigid regimen. Some view it as a cult. One of it's remarkable and peculiar practises is the use opf corporal mortification to atone for their sins - they cause severe pain to themselves till they feel they are forgiven. A word of note - I am not really sure of all this, It's just something I read in the Da Vinci Code, you know, Dan Brown's book.

      Funny--as I read the first half of this, I was going to comment that it sounded as if you were getting your information from Dan Brown! Here's Opus Dei's actual position on corporal mortification (and its purpose): www.opusdei.us/art.php?p=9316

    Watch the movie The DaVinci Code and it has more information on it. It seems to be some sort of Catholic Cult that works by blinding the human race about what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross. They also have all kinds of other beliefs.

      The DaVinci Code is a work of fiction--those generally are not the best place to go for "information".

      Madame X,

      I dont think going to a blog site and asking a bunch of people is the best way to get "information" either.

      I don't think the OP was looking for "information". The question he asked is clearly an opinion question.

      That said, people in these forums often offer excellent resources.

    Dictionary definitions of the term "cult" include at least eight different meanings. These include both classic and unorthodox religious practice, extreme political practice, objects or concepts of intense devotion, and systems for the cure of disease based on dogmatic teachings.

    Under one view, an important factor is coercive persuasion which suppresses the ability of people to reason, think critically, and make choices in their own best interest. Studies of religious, political, and other cults have identified a number of key steps in this type of coercive persuasion:
    (1) People are put in physically or emotionally distressing situations;
    (2) Their problems are reduced to one simple explanation, which is repeatedly emphasized;
    (3) They receive unconditional love, acceptance, and attention from a charismatic leader when they join and it will only continue provided that they conform;
    (4) They get a new identity based on the group;
    (5) They are subject to entrapment (isolation from friends, relatives, and the mainstream culture) and their access to information is severely controlled.

      i prefer sect, these people are not as cultish as you think infact they are for the most part integrated into normal society and there is a lot of choice exercised within the community with regards to how far you take your commitment to religion

    Did anyone see The DaVinci Code?

    Didnt see it, but heard its one of those movies whose aim is to blur the frontier between reality and virtuality, which is a specialty of the Tavistock Institute.
