   Whether or not you really have anything you want to say. It seems like very often the first thing people do is set up a blog and the second is appear in a forum like this and say, "What should I write about?" If you don't have anything to say, there might not be a reason to start a blog.

   First thing you should do is imagine what it will be like in one year - put your idea or concept into focus ... what is the first thing I do? ... play with 12 new open source blogging platforms, test every plugin, try every theme - then delete it and start all over until you forget the initial idea and move on to the next one. :)~

   Some say the very first step is to decide what you, the writer, want to blog about. Determining the purpose of your blog. Will you be promoting your products and services? . I don’t believe that is the very first step by any means.
   
   Ok the first step is to consider...........Budget.
   
   
   Yes budget is the very first step one should consider before you even decide . We need to figure out the best route for us as individuals whether or not we can afford blog hosting or if perhaps Free hosting would be the feasible route to take.

    I think you should blog for a year before going to forums to ask people how to blog...that is what people did a couple years ago and I think there was a larger number of creative blogs around then.
    
    No disrespect, but getting the cookie cutter answers to all the cookie cutter questions doesn't always translate into anything good.

    It depends what your blogging for, if you intend to monetize you should research keywords and competition, if it is a personal non profit blog you should focus more on the design and usability.

    You can't advertise (Google Adsense, Amazon widgets, etc.) on a Wordpress.com blog, so bear that in mind if you want to advertise.
    
    And once you get a following you will not want to move to another blogging platform.
    
    And write, and write, and write.

    URL. Almost anything else can be changed or evolved without any significant problem if it's not working out, but once you start getting links, changing the URL isn't so easy.
