What is the meaning of Life?

Is there a purpose to all this?

4. the subject in hand; the point at issue.
5. practical result, effect, or advantage: to act to good purpose.

It seems to me that the only way there would be a purpose to all this is if there is someone who designed it, since purpose must necessarily involve an intelligent agent.

  Have you read the book "Holographic Universe"? I believe you would enjoy it. It is quantum/meta physics based but on a philosophical level it is reflects what you are saying. The universe is merely a perception...

I don't believe there is one meaning to Life. Meaning is man-made, and you are in control of what it is. What is the purpose of your life? Perhaps that's the real question.

I often ask this question when what's important to me is challenged, when I'm feeling overworked and I'm living more for others' expectations than my own.

What I return to is that I should enjoy moments in time, what I already have and what and who is around me. It is very Zen. When I get to the point of saying 'I'm okay, my life is wonderful', then I feel at ease.

I believe my life purpose is to always get to this point, despite the stress and insanity around me.

so, what's the purpose of your life?

I believe we will never truly know our "purpose" here on this earth, but we can live each day to the fullest and explore the world for all it has to offer. Perhaps some will achieve a sort of enlightenment and peace, others will not...

  Simply: Its a matter of belief. The meaning of life is to fellowship with God and people. Colossians 1:16 states: All things were created by Him and for Him. I would think that this would apply whether or not you believe in God.
  
  Should you not believe simply remove the term: God
  
  If you were marooned on an island with a handful of people your purpose would be to help towards feeding and caring for the rest of the group. We are just on a larger island.
  
  Although we all have individual purpose and meaning, we are one clan.
  Your positive influence, however small, on another human-being is an enormous gift to you, there I think, in a nutshell, is the significance of being on this planet.
  
  For instance; being a mother or a father is an enormous contribution coupled with infinite meaning.

Thank you for all the insightful responses. Maybe my purpose is to blog. Just joking, but I feel it is true what they say, "The unexamined life is not worth living"
Some people think the purpose of life is to figure out that exact question, "What is it" and once the riddle is solved enlightenment will be achieved.
Personally I try to be a good person, maintain happiness and wonderment about the gift called life at all times, but it is a very strange place, the unknown. Sometimes I get depressed and feel life is pointless. Maybe the key to it all is to stop trying to figure it all out and just be.

Ah, the meaning of life? well, let me take a stab at this gorgeous question. i love all physcology questions. (i just cant spell physcology) lol.

I think god put us here to go crazy slowly. yes, this is true, but in the journey from sane to completely wacked out (around 60 years of age), some people contribute and leave the world a better place than when they arrived (such as gandhi, luther king jr, einstein, mozart, agassi, stewart, winfrey, seinfeld, and jobs) others try and IMHO effort is just as strong as succeeding.

some procreate and some don't, some learn, some grow, some teach.

basically life is what one makes it. that's my answer in a nutshell.

A purpose to all this...well, as much as I'd like to say something brilliant, I won't. I'll just say that my religion holds the answer (or non-answer depending on how you view it) "Now we shall see dimly...then we shall see fully."

Which, translated, means:
No answers now, but keep on keepin' on 'cause some day you will know.

Purpose of life? A lot! Unless you know the real meaning of life, I don't think we can define the purpose at all. Realizing a Supreme Power controls this Universe, knowing how to praise God and knowing our own limitations would help us to understand the real purpose in our lives. I appreciate the question and the opportunity for me to post my thoughts here:-)

Our only purpose is survival of the species and this is accomplished by fulfilling your potential.

Each individual is unique with their own gifts and contributions to the rest of the human race. Not just to literally procreate although that is one piece but by developing your unique talents you are contributing like it or not. Each action or nonaction has reactions and reprecussions.

Beliefs/ right or wrong / opinions are merely illusions so don't get distracted. If each individual would take a moment to ask themselves what makes them truely happy they would discover the answer is in their own genetic coding. We are all born with our own unique talents.

So I chose to focus on what makes me happy and pursue those things.

Well in a nut shell: life is a progression up until the harvest. In other words, a progression up to the separation of the children of light and the children of darkness. For now we live together.

That is why we are meant to seek our Creator and seek what the truth is.

I support CaseyC's first comment... There is no clear purpose in life. The purpose is the meaning you give to your life... Your life can be purposeful only if you find that purpose. It's all choices, and consequences. You can choose what everyone chooses, and be "Happy" with it... or, you can have a meaning. You can be YOU.

I believe that you give definition to your life. You are the creater.. it's like having a chess pieces in your pocket and each day you decide how you are going to play it. Got that from Steppenwolf.. a book that has defined my life up to now.

  I Like the Herman Hesse quote dharmagypsy7, or may I call you Dharma for short. I read Steppenwolfe years ago and realized I was a madman. I also realized I would have to read the book again later in life to understand it better. Nice to know that their are other people out there who like Hesse.

The "intelligent agent" is God and He made His purposes clear to us all. Unfortunately, some thought His purposes were hidden but we have the Bible to find out. And if we have good relationship with God, our purpose in life is clear too. Why are we made or created in the first place? There is certainly a purpose why we're here. As soon as we learn why God created us, we're heading to the right path of knowing our purposes. So are you up to the challenge of knowing God's purpose for you?

You would have to (Quorum Sense) communicate with bacteria somehow to find out the answer to that question. They've been around a lot longer than we have and will continue to be around long after we're gone.
