What event in modern history (social, political, global, environmental, religious, etc)moved you the most? In what way were you moved and why?

Hiroshima and Nagasaki --total devastation. Physical, emotional & psychological.

    (Hey--love your avatar change!)
    1. psychosolodiver
Yeah! "Total devastation. Physical, emotional & psychological." for the enemy! Those two events saved many American lives by ending the war sooner.

The devastation was unbelieveable, I had a course in college with Hans Bethe (sp?). He worked on the Manhattan Project and he described how it was the race to develop the bomb before the Nazis did and thus saved many lives.

      @avecchioni
      Thanks for the avatar feedback.

Is anyone actually discounting the historic magnitude of Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the devastation was directed at the "enemy"---?
    4. fearless21
No doubt...our lives would not be what they are today. The bomb changed the course of history and the lives of millions.

9/11 and/or Pearl Harbor. How was I moved? Pissed and sad at the same time.

Aside from those, I was totally impressed when the first pictures came back from the Mars rovers in the 1990s. I think it was 1996, I don't remember. Everyone was talking about it in chatrooms. It was amazing the detail in the pictures.

Yes, indeed, that was extremely cool-- and a bit mind-boggling. Excellent choice!

I studied about Hiroshima & Nagasaki. Nothing more.

I will consider the prosperity of Internet Revolution.

I am surprised that no one mentioned 9/11!

      Psychosolodiver did!

In my lifetime...My mom still has the newspaper with the headlines about JFK being assassinated. I was too young to understand or remember. I remember when my teacher was very sad the day MLK Jr was assassinated. Walking on the moon was pretty cool and, of course, the hero's homecoming. There was the Oklahoma bombing, 9/11, Princess Diana's death and funeral, that nasty tsunami, Hurricane Andrew, the more recent hurricanes that hit New Orleans and Galveston. On an upbeat note, the historic election of Obama.

    @busylizzy,
Funny you mentioned Diana, I got up in the middle of the night to watch her funeral. While I know her death in no way had the catastophic impact that these other events had, it still moved me to tears and I am not sure why.
    1. busylizzy
      I bawled, too...

The topic just asked for "moving" events so I figured it wanted events that caused personal, emotional reactions in us.
    2. fearless21
I am agreeing with you about Diana, I still feel sad for her boys. The event moved me too.

Britney Spears without panties of course...
    1. fearless21
That certainly did hurt the lingerie business.
    2. busylizzy
Danielpeci - I think Fearless21 meant that your "emotions" were moved, not your dumbstick!

    The Berlin Wall coming down.

It changed the world as we understood it at the time. I will never forget the scenes of celebration -- like a peace wave. I will remember it as long as I live.
    1. csiunatc
I agree midwest, was starting to wonder when someone would mention that.

MidwestMom, I was about to post that same thing. Such a moving, wonderful moment. On a personal level, I had just gone to Germany with my family on vacation that summer, and one of my relatives there, who had escaped from East Germany very early on as a young boy told us that something would happen that year because of the different borders opening.

    The arrival of the Avatar.

The implications are beyond any thing imaginable
    1. fearless21
You are joking?...or maybe not. I keep changing my avatar which I hear is a blogging no no. I can't decide between myself, a rabbit or some meaningless words.
    2. acousticguitarist
Do you know what an Avatar is?

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar
    3. fearless21
Well, I guess the avatar in that context is major. I stand corrected.

I guess it helps to remove my one dimensional thoughts from Bloggerville!
    4. acousticguitarist
The word Avatar is a Hindu word. The point being if there was a Divine incarnation, it would have to be the most important event of our time. And I'm not saying that the Avatar has come to the earth but it is thought provoking

Second would be the coming of the Space People.

Here's an article from my old blog

The Red Sox winning the World Series in 2004--breaking an 86 year drought!

On a serious note--I would say that the man on the moon--or perhaps the election of Barack Obama.
    1. fearless21
That was a great game let us not minimize that series!
    2. melindaville
      fearless--it TRULY was!

The destruction and continued destruction of the Amazon rain forest! The killing of great creatures like Whales and stuff like that as far as I am concerned
    1. fearless21
I don't think we as a society fully understand why the rainforest is so important but it is. Unfortunatly, it will take major crisis to understand.
