i haven't had any success with this yet, but these are the things i've recently started doing that i have fairly high hopes for.
1- focus on increasing visitors (and i've had a good amount of success with this by participating in blog carnivals, btw)
2- re-design areas of my blog to make the advertising a more cohesive part of it (i did this over the weekend so now my ads blend in better without being at all hidden)... and also keep ads "above the fold"
3- link to amazon via the associates program when reviewing products they sell
i'm still very new to this, but we'll see how it goes! good luck to you also.

Great!!! I am really impressed with this article.
Because every third person is writing the same stuff $$$$$ but in different words... blah blah blah!!! Is this blogging????
If it is, Then I am not a blogger :-)
The amount people spend to research and get visitors can actually lead me to a CEO of a Brand in next 5 years...
Cheers!!!

step 1. you research a lot
step 2. find your niche - which you can write about
step 3. keep a track which of the content people are truly reading and returning for .
step 4. read your own articles - then read other peoples blogs to check if you are not writing thats already written elsewhere
step 5. build up trust and check if people are recommending your articles - implement a refer a friend / bookmarking .
step 6. write some more great content
if all of this has gone well , monetizing further is just implementing some pieces of javascript inside your blog's templates. Increasing your blog content and thus traffic is the main way to monetizing.
For example , www.phpcafe.net/blog/2008/02/13/vbulletin-version-37/ this post ... i spent 45 minutes to write ... and to make sure i am not plagiarizing someone else's thoughts . -
I just got this really cool Widget and it is free.
Check it out in action on my blog.

I'm trying to use Adsense on my blog, www.damnthatsweird.com
and so far I have gotten a few clicks. I'll let you know how this works so far. Adsense seems to be the easiest thing to do for blogs. Getting traffic is another story. -
Most of my hits on all of my websites are from Google. I just optimize my content to get my site on Google front page w/o buying Adsense spots. Another great tool is to use www.linkreferral.com
wierdwebsites.blogspot.com (google "wierd websites")
webdesignbysteve.com (google "optimized web design tacoma")
I have several more that get me 1st or 2nd page. These 2 get me 1st position. -
Your blog should be an attraction strategy to promote a digital product of your own that you sell.
Once you have your own product to sell, you can also partner with other website owners and enhance your exposure by offering them affiliate earnings.
Sound hard?
It's getting easier and easier.
I just found www.TradeBit.com the other day and I had my first PDF up and ready for sale within 20 minutes!
This has started me to re-think some of the old white-papers, pdf's and Power Point's I have littering my compter...

Basically as mentioned above, first and foremost, if you build it, that does not necessarily mean they will come in droves! You must do the work to gain traffic then do the work to monetize it.
One cannot always go by the methods that someone else uses to monetize their blog or website because what works for one person may not work for another.
You have to test monetization methods on your blog/website and decide what works and what doesn't. -
This is very interesting and may give you insight as to who has backlinks to your site
