On success:
Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote on success is IMO relevant to both life online and offline:
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; this is to have succeeded.”
On being successful by living a balanced life
There is a line to be drawn, however, between healthy, ambitious work habits and workaholism. If pursuing a short term financial goal is more important that assuring a long-term relationship with your partner, children and friends then you need to rethink your priorities. Balance is truly the key.
In short I believe that I’m a “success” when I’m setting realistic goals and achieving them. My definition success includes achieving goals in the workplace, however, I believe “success” is applicable to finishing whatever I planned to do in any aspect of my life.
I will not feel that I have lived a “successful life,” if the amount of time and attention I invest on a single aspect of my life exceeds the investment I make into the other aspects.

On workaholism, authenticity and blogging
The reality is that much of the web is designed, not so much to share information, as to sell it. It’s also a reality bloggers today, more than ever before, have many demands on their time and social media networking to create an authentic online presence can be a time drain. Also, as blogging becomes more and more a means of making an income, all bloggers are under increasing pressure to create a “nice” online presence and reputation.
You don’t have to meet the demands and expectations of others if they are unreasonable, unrealistic or unfair. The trouble with being too nice all the time is that you can’t be yourself at any time. When you can’t be yourself, at least, for majority of the time, the psychological and physical tension can wear you out. Provided we are courteous observers of netiquette then who we are online ought to be the same “who” we are offline.
My favorite quote
In number 1 place for me is Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote I shared at the beginning of this comment. The one below is IMO a companion to it.
"The golden rule your parents and your kindergarten teacher taught you was pretty simple: Do unto others as you’d have others do unto you. Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes. Stand up for yourself, but try not to hurt people’s feelings. " — The Core Rules of Netiquette
