Hi all!

We all are bloggers here and I hope everyone is wishing to promote his/her blog(s). What ways do you promote your blog(s)?

I use blog catalog, feedburner, technorati and Search engines presently to promote my blog.

I add my bloglink to the signature line of my outgoing emails and I let my family and friends know about my blog, plus, I use BlogCatalog.

I am a new comer and thank you for posting your ideas here. I never thought about adding the email signatures as another way of promotion.

Blog Directories, Social Networking sites, articles and commenting on other blogs.

Oh, and responding to questions like this!
    1. Xight
MarkDykemen has it right. Helping people by offering good advice makes people interested in what you have to say, especially in forums. Seems like my other thread died so I'll add the things I've done for my site to the list.

      1. Submit to Search Engines
      2. Submit to Directories
      3. Are you a blogger? Submit to blog directories
      4. Join a community (like blog catalog)
      5. Social Bookmarking - Digg, StumbleUpon, Technorati, Delicious, Furl, News Vine.
      7. Using images
      8. RSS - Syndicate
      9. Article Marketing
      10. Track Backs
      11. Blog commenting - Don't spam these
      12. Instructional Topics
      13. Reviewing Past Topics
      14. Link Bait - contests/free stuff
      15. Good Content

    Hi Xight...
Great sum up but how do you think adding images or using images can help generate traffic?? Is it because the blog looks more attractive?
    1. tenforty
Hi param, use image attributes and add the title tag and/or alt tags to images.

    I add my comments here.

I ping every time I add content. (I use a website that automatically pings about 50 different places). I participate in discussions here on BC and post links to my blogs when it's appropriate. For my politics blog I try to get my best posts Dugg and sometimes get a lot of traffic from Digg. My books blog gets more traffic from search engines. I submit to various sites and directories as I have time but have found that many of these are a waste of time and generate little or no traffic.
    1. param
Hi libdrone..... It'll be helpful if you name a few ping sites.

Guys..... I am really enlightened. I hope it will help us all gain more ideas to generate traffic.

Blogrush is also a good mechanism because your blog posts are featured in a widget, which increases your traffic over time.
  13. varniticula
Blogrush is still in the works, but making a yourself a banner (there are sites where you can make one for free) and then making a myspace account, adding friends, promoting banner to friends, yadayadayada you go from there.
  14. Abdalla
I dont even have one...my traffic just seems to increase steadily out of nowhere!
    1. param
But still there must be some source.....

You must be think I'm from a third world country, but I should tell you that blogging is not the common things to do in my society. Therefore, promoting my blog offline is almost no effect at all.

Therefore, I rely on online promotion such as BlogCatalog, Technorati, etc.
  16. Xight
You asked about the ping service.

    ping-o-matic.com or autopinger.com are 2 that I know of.

Blogspot blogs will ping technorati/google each time you post something new. Also if you have feedburner it has a pingshot which you can ping 10 different places upon each post.
    1. param
      Thank you buddy..!

This site is one way! Way A LOT!

If you are a blogger from wordpress, blogspot, typepad and blogs that have a feedburner feed link somewhere on their page, and if YOU DROP A COMMENT to my site: www.writinerary.com, you'll get an automatic link bank to your latest post if you noticed below your APPROVED comment (note: I'm practicing comment moderation due to SPAMMERS!!!). Just be patient... and you'll be surprised, my readers or fellow commentors can directly click to your site. Wanna try what I'm telling you? Click my site above. There's no harm in trying.

I used to do a lot of promoting at different places such as Blogmad and BlogExplosion, but have found those places to be pretty much dead. I mainly participate on the BC forum and comment on other blogs. I'm sure I could do more though...
    1. param
I agree to certain extent..... it's been just two days that I am here at blog catalog and I have seen the results.

All of the ideas here are great, but the best promotion for your blog is to write great, compelling, and original content. Spending a lot of time on promotion won't help much if your content doesn't make casual readers want to come back for more. Turning casual readers into subscribers who link to you will bring the greatest return on your investment over the long run.
    1. Xight
I partly agree with this, but you have to do some promoting, and promoting to the right places.

You can have the best content in the world, but noone will know about it if you don't share it with anyone.

You can have the best content in the world, but if you show it to your dog chances are its just going to pee on it.

So make good content, and promote accordingly in the right places. People will pick it up, and share it around if they are interested in the things you write.

That should have gone into my post about blog traffic =p
  20. blogbloke
Of course Xight. That goes with saying. But the bottom line is you should be spending the majority of your time writing great content.

It's no different than the real world. There's no better advertisement than a direct reference from a happy customer.

Keep your perspective and your priorities right. That's what I'm saying.
    1. Xight
Only exception to this is if you have a lot of money to spend on advertising. Then you could put up a big sign in the middle of every city and starbucks with your website vvvvdotcom on it, and everyone with a laptop/wifi would be like wtf? Google vvvvdotcom
      Sad but true.
    2. param
You are right blogbloke but I am also of the opinion that incase you do not want to/ can not spend huge amount of money... writing quality & fresh content will help but not to a great extent. There are lacs of blogs being added daily to the blogsphere and you need to prove yourself and for this, in my opinion, promotion needs to be given equal attention as it is needed for content building.
  21. AndersonCoffee
I draw my sitename (coffee-addict.net) on bottom of coffee-cup. When my frends drink coffee they ask me "What is it?" and I reply "Its your fate"
  22. blogbloke
You still don't understand what I'm saying.

You can spend 90% of your time promoting but if your content is crap you're wasting your time. Whereas if you spend 90% of your time writing great content the word will get out. People will find you and link to you, not to mention the SEO benefits either.

It's not about spending money on advertising. It's about becoming known for your content, and if your content is good the word will get around.

I'm not saying that you should neglect promoting your blog, but you should be spending most of your time developing content according to your niche.

Of course it's a bit more complicated than that and I explain it in more detail in my blog. But that is it in a nutshell.
    1. Xight
That very last comment of mine was meant to be cynical towards all those ads in high traffic areas promoting crap (ie buy wow gold in myspace advertisement). I guess towards the end of the day at work I sound more, and more like a jerk =P.
    2. param
I got exactly what you mean blogbloke. Thanks... this was a real piece of advise.
  23. blogbloke
I hope I didn't hijack your discussion group Param because that wasn't my intention. I just wanted to make certain that I got my point across. Anyhow, this has been enlightening and by all means continue. The more that we all share the more we can learn, including myself.
    1. param
Not at all blog bloke...... and by no means this is my discussion group....... I am a part of it like you are and I believe that knowledge speaks.... you have really enlightened me atleast.
  24. cluttercubed
I agree with blogbloke here. Spend the majority of your time coming up with great posts and great content for your blog. Then spend the other remaining (small) part of your time on promotion.
The better your content, the better results you will get from every promotion you do.

I can post my blog link in comments like this: clutter-cubed.com and it might generate a few hits from people reading this discussion, but if they're not interested in my content they're not going to stick around, and they're certainly not going to subscribe.
I'm just starting out so while I don't have a lot of content yet, I'm trying my best to make it interesting and helpful for readers so they will want to come back.

I think it is getting One Way High Quality Back Links to your site and Creating Quality Content on your blog. Recently I had a reader post comment on article I wrote at Amazines.com on this subject and it was very interesting.

I just posted article on my blog here: seojr.com/quality-one-way-backlinks-effective-seo-technique/
  26. Majik
I've submitted my blog to search engines and different blog directories. What seems to work as of late has been entrecard.com which usually sends a lot of traffic, just so other bloggers can drop their cards. Participating in discussion here on BC and giving comments on other blogs helps too.
  27. imcobarn
I agree with Blogbloke, Content is #1 followed by backlinks.

There are so many ways to promote your blog these days the list is endless.I would suggest to try out all the social sites you come across, including one's like bc,mybloglog, and bumpzee.Just sign up to them, and start promoting then check your stats to see where your traffic is coming from. The one's that are not working well stop spending time there.
Myself believe it or not I have probably been to all of them over time.

so far the most traffic I've gotten has been from posting comments to other blogs in my category (personal finance), carnivals for personal finance, and by submitting comments on sites like blogcatalog.com
  30. MagdalenaNolan
I focus first and foremost on content. Search engines generate about 80% of the traffic I receive, and it's all through natural search.

I also use Blog Catalog, Feedburner, Digg, Technorati and a few other places.
