What kind of comments do you leave on blogs? Are they relevant to the posts or just random?

Do you leave random comments? I consider those spam and just ridiculous. Am I the only one? Ok, this is assuming that most bloggers take pride in their blog, they put time and thought into their posts. They put their personality and personal thoughts into it.
We all know that by leaving comments on a dofollow blog that it will create a backlink to ours and give us some seo juice. But, wouldn't you rather have the backlink and have that blogger visit your blog and comment too? When I get random comments like "nice blog. I leave comment. Please leave comment on my blog", it irritates the crap out of me.
Just show some respect and read the blog first before commenting. If you don't you look like a douchebag and a spammer. bleh. Deleted and blocked.
Anyone else have feelings about this?

Well, I certainly don't backtrack to the blog of someone who leaves a lame or irrelevant comment! But I don't block them unless they're a linkpuker or otherwise advertising stuff. They have free speech.
I'm most likely to comment if I have something to say about a particular post. Even when I scroll the CommentLuv "active blogs" list, I look for posts that interest me enough to reply. -

What I read and what I write are two different things.
If I read something on a blog that I think is good, I will comment. However, I do not expect (or even ask) them to look at my blog as quid pro quo. I will read it if I like it, regardless.
However, if I have time, I do respond to comments on my blog that ask questions or deserve follow-ups. -
What kind of comments?
I try to leave comments that are longer than 10 words so no stupid comments like "Nice blog. I commented in your so comment in mine." or "Just checked your blog, please check mine too ok? Thanks!"
I try to say what I think about the topic, give my opinion about a particular passage of the post or something like that. -
I make sure that if i comment i have read the post completely and have something relevant to say.
I can relate to you actually. my personal favorite: on one occasion someone commented by calling my blog "powerful" and "uplifting" and asked me to comment on theirs. The thing is...none of my posts meet that description by a long shot. My most recent posts have been about the death of my pet rock, almost getting beat up by some dude, and a sarcastic post on the swine flu scare. Truly uplifting stuff-
I know I am feeling all warm and fuzzy from your blog topics right now.
It's funny how they try to change the words up a little bit in the hope of tricking you into believing they actually read anything. I guess we are all really looking for the same thing in a comment: relevance and honesty.
I've had people disagree with me in their comment, and even say they were offended because I used a word they didn't like in my second post. (I said I felt "retarded") I changed it out of respect, but inside I was amazed at how someone could take an obviously innocent statement and turn it into a slur. But, at least their comment showed they READ the blog and was conversational. John Chow says if you're not pissing someone off you're doing something wrong. Good to know I'm on the road to success! hehe

I'm grateful for any comments that I get on my blog but my preference when I leave a comment on someone else's blog is to leave a thoughtful one, based on the post's content.
-
Be careful what you are grateful for if you are wanting your blog to move up in the search engine rankings. If your site is crawled and there is a lot of spammy comments or links to sites that are simply put up by scraping others so they can set up advertising...it WILL affect your site's rank. It's like my mom always told me: You are who you associate with.
-
Just as I won't leave a comment that is not relevant, I will not allow a comment that is not relevant.
The idiotic comments like other have mentioned here, "Inspirational, beautiful... now leave a comment at my blog" are the main reason I moderate all comments.
I don't expect someone to comment on my blog just because I commented on theirs, they ought not expect me to comment on theirs simply because they left a comment on mine.
I also do not expect nice comments or seek nice and agreeable comments. I enjoy the disagreeable because life is boring when everyone agrees with you.

I'm a believer that cool comments that show your writing ability and comprehension of the subject will inspire others to check out your blog on their own.
I've read comments on other blogs and thought, "hey they make sense", or "hey, they're kind of funny...I think I'll check out their blog too." There is no need to leave a comment with your link and a request for that blog owner's readers to also visit your blog. That would be like being invited to a party then going there and asking everyone to come to your party instead.
Same thing has happened in reverse. I've had others visit my blog from comments I've left. Hmm...I'm learning something here. I need to leave MORE great comments!!

I try and include opinion, feedback or just a little extra something that shows that I've actually read what has been written.
If it's a new-ish blog I also try and add some words of encouragement. As a new blogger myself I know how exciting getting a (real) comment can be so I always try and make an effort. -
I normally leave:
"I have not bothered to read your blog as it looks rather bland and boring, but if you would like to see how it is really done well then read mine and click on all the ads, so I can continue to be awesome" -
my comments are usually relevant to the post or I just want to let them know I like their blog. I really don't care about gathering commentators or building traffic (it has shown no impact on me professionally after three years of blogging so why bust my backside for them) so if I say I like a blog it is because I wanted to take the time to say so.
As for this "nice blog. I leave comment. Please leave comment on my blog" or "nice blog, visit mine" it puts me right off. I didn't ask people to visit and comment on my blog and I don't feel I owe favours just because they visited mine. -
I leave a comment to how the blog made me feel.. what it did for me.. I respect all peoples opinions even tho I may not agree.. The only time I will comment was if I enjoyed it myself.. I havent had a bad comment yet.. I think some people just want to be heard so they post there blogs around here and there..
Happy Blogging my Fellow Bloggers! -
I pretty much reflect jafabrit's approach. I try to leave more than a 3- or 4-word one liner. ("Good. Keep it up."). Not that I don't use such terms, but mine are usually a little more detailed paragraph or two. Stating why this particular blog or post caught my attention. Of course I hope for a view and reply to my own blog, but most that do, reply in brief words. I have yet to find a connection to any small group that intently interact on a sustained basis. We all seem to be doing quick cherry picking, dropping a word or two, and moving on. Seeking more. Always more.
Ah, well. It's the medium. I'm gradually adjusting. I find I am being more active in scanning these discussion topics than in searching out particular blogs.-
I whole-heartedly disagree with you. By leaving relevant comment posts on higher ranked do-follow blogs (rank can be either Alexa or Google PR) you will have a backlink to your blog. If you learn a little about how the search engines do their ranking, you'll find that a large percentage is based on how many good sites you have linking back to your site.
Also, always remember that your comments are content too. Other commenters on blogs read your comments. I can't tell you how many times I've visited another blog based on a comment they left on a blog I like to read. If you are leaving short uninspired comments on other blogs you are missing out on a great opportunity to promote your writing talent and your blog. Comments=content.

Of course relevant. Projecting my views on the same topic. But some times I put something like "WOW, Great post" etc. that is just to encourage the writer and in that case I have not my own view on that topic.
-
I leave meaningful comments that add to the discussion or none at all. I fully understand how linking works. Frankly, I've yet to find any do-follow blog with contents that I consider to be worthwhile subscribing, to let alone commenting on. I will never deliberately create a comment to leave on a do-follow blog simply to secure a backlink. And, I delete all comments made to my non-monetized blogs when I suspect they have been made simply to secure a commentluv link back to their most recent blog post.
-
I prefer posting a comment here on the BC discussion boards. It is more fluid. As for blogs, if I leave a comment its because I really want to contribute a thought. It takes time to write a meaningful comment. I wish I had more time to do that. So many great blogs out there worth commenting on.
As for spam comments…I have a curse ritual for them. Before I delete them I CURSE them with misfortune and regret. Beware of my curse…not all curses are fantasy. -
it totally depends on the content of the blog. and whether it is good or not and how it can be improved. i don't try to spam there on the blog. in return i want a return comment on my blog.
-
I love getting comments and I love giving them. I'd never even dream of leaving a critical comment on somebody's blog. I'd consider it a deficiency in myself if I couldn't find something of value in any person's attempt to express themselves. And superficial comments don't bother me. A simple "Hi, how are you!" can be the beginning of a deep friendship.

Hmmmm... sometimes I will comment and leave a link to a cartoon I have done that is related to the content of the particular blog post. Do you consider that spam?? In my opinion 99% of comments are self-promotion even if there is no link back... your comment is basically saying "Hey, look at me! I am somebody!".
Oh... almost forgot, here's a cartoon RELATED to blogs!
