I've been trying out Elance for freelance writing jobs for about five weeks now, and have made a grand total of $200 (minus the fees).

What online freelance job boards have you tried? Do you recommend them? What kind of success have you had finding freelance jobs this way?

Have you tried paid posting services? Freelance writing can be difficult, especially right now.

I'm not willing to write blog posts @ $5 or $10 per post. That works out to far less than even minimum wage.

If I'm going to write for virtually free, I'll do it on my own blog--and one day, my blog and I will Rule the Free World.

There are a lot of 5 and 10 dollar posts out there, but, you just need to know where to look is all...and be dedicated is all. I've seen much higher payouts, that are legit, than just the "typical" 5 and 10 dollar posts.

I agree with eba1999. I'd go further, freelance writing is a load of garbage, full of those who expect you to write long articles for peanuts. Paid posting is far more lucrative, only thing is the better offers depend on PR ranking and paid posting is the easiest way to lose your PR.

Nonsense. Freelance job boards are havens for people looking for cheap labor, and they find it, so most have no incentive to pay more. That doesn't mean that there isn't decent (even good) money to be made in freelance writing. Even low-end markets (such as regional parenting magazines) pay around $50/article for articles that might take an hour or two to research and write, and many pay hundreds or even thousands.

Thanks for your input, guys. I've been to OWJ, as well as FWJ, but I will check out survive as well.

So far FWJ has been most productive for me.

I got another gig from Elance, which is turning out to be nickel-and-dime fiasco.

Still waiting for my very own stimulus package.

I've been with GetAFreelancer for 3 years now. Doing great so far; winning clients from different countries, doing projects for them. The key here is focus. If you will try one site, focus on that site; build your profile, bid on projects and deliver. That way, you will get more and more clients coming your way. If you do nothing but just keep on joining sites you'll end up $0.00

You made your membership fees back!

I've used Guru for years and, while I don't think it is the best job site, I can find work when I want to. You'll get to know the ropes with Elance too. It just takes a little time to learn how the system works then getting it to work for you.

    Johnny,

Yes, I made my membership fees back with Elance, but barely breaking even does not work for me. Plus, the hassle! OMG. My second Elance client turned out to be a losing proposition, with a multi-million dollar company refusing to pay the contract price because they didn't like the first draft. First draft!

I blogged about it here, and named names: greenroomthoughts.blogspot.com/search?q=elance
