I moved into the city a while ago and noticed that a lot of people in my end of town walk on the left side of the side walk. I was taught to walk on the right, like the way the cars drive.

Is there a correct side? What side do you walk on?

I just walk where I won't run into anybody. LOL.

    On the right side.

Whichever way puts me in front of the most people.

I have the natural ability to get through people or to stop and wait for the ones who can't figure out how to "FLOW"...

It comes from many years of cocktail waitressing. LOL!

So it doesn't really matter which side I'm on... I can even walk against the stream of traffic fairly easy.

I never gave it much thought. I just walk for the most part, but if someone is coming in the opposite direction I tend to move towards the right. Like if I were driving. I've often thought malls should have right and left lanes. It would certainly make the mall walk a bit easier. The whole concept of mall traffic is just pure anarchy.

there is no "rule" but a helpful government directive asking people to walk on the right side of the road(when there is no footpath).. this way, the person in the vehicle and the pedestrian can see each ther incoming and can avoid accidents and navigate easily.

When there is a footpath, it is a moo point.

ps: vehicles travel on the left side of the road in India.

All the time I find people coming towards me that won't even move aside for me and that's frustrating.

I posed the question to my brother of why a lot of people in our city walk on the left side and he thought it may be b/c we have a lot of immigrants from Asia etc so like dsriharsha said, they drive on the left side of the road and not the right.

In response to bOllOcks, in the smaller cities around me (suburbs) in the mall people do tend to walk on the right side.
