I notice that either you have to be annoying, or totally been here longer to get responses on your posts.

wrong wrong wrong. Being annoying isn't going to help
I think you are refering to a 'rant' post.. which is hard to pull off without sounding like a jerk. Posts that cleverly dispute a position taking by someone authoritive will generally get a good reaction.
'pillar' posts are posts that have information you would constantly be linking back to in your blog. For instance, if you have an SEO blog.. you maybe have a pillar post that defines what 'nofollow' links are.. since that will come up many times in your blogging. Pillar posts are usually researched and linked to in future blog articles.
I think TT wrote a post on this.. not sure -
Length of time and annoying have little to do with it.
It seems that some of the most oblique discussions become huge.
Some of the most pertinent are left for the wolves. -
ohh. my bad. I thought you mean blog posts
The biggest winners seem to be the forum posts with no substance. That sounds bad but if you think about it - everyone can participate if your post is about nothing. If it's something in your niche, your audience will natuarlly be smaller-

Surprise! I wrote a post on that for the BC New Users Group

Aside: FWIW All the threads about super heroes, soul mates, etc. come from other forums. One can cruise through livejournal, Facebook, etc. and see what's posted in other forums and how well the topics go over or not.

I'm going to totally avoid the first response and say that most people are looking for is often (though not always.) sensationalism of any kind. Real writing, good writing holds little interest for most who are online these days.
