I'm taking an unofficial poll of people I know (and don't know).

Mine was selling K-Swiss and Nikes at Footlocker while wearing that ridiculous referee uniform. At the end of every week, the manager of the store would hit the NO SALE button on the register and pay us in straight-up cash!

They pre-calculated your taxes and deductions and gave you your net pay. I don't know if this was a company-wide policy or just the policy of this particular, ghetto location. It's not like this was a long time ago either.

I had to learn to make various mixed drinks, myself...Left handed screwdrivers, whiskey sours, etc. I only found out years later that using 8oz+ of booze in a single drink was NOT normal.

I worked at the refreshment stand at a movie theatre as my first real job, but I did modeling, paper route, babysitting and a few other things before that.

Delivering groceries for the tiniest grocery store in the world.
    1. ethnicavenue
The tiniest grocery store I ever saw was a stand in West (or it could have been) East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. You drove up to the kiosk and ordered what you wanted (milk, cheese, etc). The guy then went down into the basement of the kiosk and got it for you. The stand itself was a little larger than a toll booth.

Could yours have been smaller than this?
    2. nothingprofound
Depends on how big the basement was. But, technically, I don't know if I'd consider a kiosk or a stand a store.

Baby sitting for people and at church. My first real job was walmart. It sucked.

Other than babysitting here and there, I got my first real job when I was 15 one summer as an Interior/Exterior painter. I spent the summer painting low income townhouses for $6.25/hr.
  10. ethnicavenue
The paint job in my place has been looking a little shabby lately. Are your rates still this reasonable? I'm low income.
    1. AroundTheWaygirl
Absolutely not, lol. I haven't picked up a paint brush since. I dreamt about blue paint for YEARS after!

i babysat for years - i'm kind of embarrassed to say i didn't have a "real" job until last year, when i was 21 and had an internship at the cincinnati opera. before that i generally watched neighborhood kids for relatively decent pay.

i'm applying for real, grownup jobs now and it's terrifying!!!
  12. ethnicavenue
People don't seem to hire male babysitters in the same numbers as female.

Delivering a huge load of newspapers on foot at 6 in the morning in Casper Wyoming when I was 8 years old. True story. That job kind of kicked my ass. Nothing since has ever kicked my ass.

1st job at which I earned a paycheck - working for my parents, entering in drivers' daily logs into the computer. dabbled in retail, babysitting but primary source was always earning minimum wage working for the folks and laughing with the drivers LOL

Giving horse riding lessons. It was fun. Then, I took an irrigating job irrigating 163 acres. That was more labor intensive.

My first nine to five was a summer job at a small newspaper, subbing for vacationing employees. They were a hard-drinking, hard-partying bunch. Most fun people I ever worked with.

Dishwasher for high end Japanese sushi bar and restaurant. Sucked balls. All of the dishwashers quit at the same time. I laughed at the owners spoiled nephew because I told him he'd have to wash dishes when we were gone, to which he laughed because he didn't believe me. Bwahahahaha. I still take pleasure in the thought of that spoiled pansy having to get his hands dirty.
