Humor bloggers, how are you best getting eyeballs to your site? The humor niche is a tough nut to crack and I'm curious about what works for you to generate traffic and loyal readers?

So far what works best for me is search engine traffic and also a couple surprise backlinks from popular blogs - salon.com and yesbutnobutyes.com . Mild results from entrecard, project wonderful.

What doesn't work much for me are promotion on forum boards and social media (the most diggs I have is only 17 on an image). I just joined humor-blogs.com and have better hopes for it since it's very targeted. What about you?

Actually, social media is working well for me. Just general forum participation the way I would regarding my thrifting blog. A lot of folks visit and comment from BlogCatalog.

I think it just takes longer to build, perhaps, because it's not an easy-to-describe niche.

And great content helps, like TSR and Amy produce.
      Interacting with commentors.
Entrecard, and best of all, bribery and extortion.
So, either visit my blog, or I'll....you know.

    2. EavesdropWriter
@TSR, I can relate to your description of 'wandering the streets laughing to myself'! I'm a self laugher, too. Good to know you're having success with social media. I will plod on and see what happens.

Congrats on your front page listing at humor-blogs.com!
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Thanks! It's really only because they've reorganized their rating system, so I imagine it'll be temporary. But hey, it's fun while it lasts.

@Crotchety, call off the dogs! I visited and so enjoyed your banana hammock photo. Well, not "your" banana hammock, with all due respect.
    5. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh, his post with that is hilarious... And WRONG.... But really hilarious.
  2. AmyOops
people picking up something i posted and re posting it on there site. I get a lot of traffic from that
    1. EavesdropWriter
That's very cool. I think I saw a post of yours with a bucketload of Diggs recently. You have some funny images posted. I especially like the mug shot of the young man with the Joker tatts. His parents must be so proud.
  3. BlogBadly
    Use Stumbleupon.
    1. EavesdropWriter
Tru dat. Haven't put much time into stumbling yet.
    2. BlogBadly
It's my biggest source of traffic =D
  4. CLA3000
I am going to try those as well. Getting people to read your blog is hard freaking work.
    1. EavesdropWriter
Totally hard effin work. Sometimes I smack my monitor harder when I look at my web analytics than I did when I used to play online poker and donkeys sucked out my pocket aces again and again.

I need to calm down. Time for a Miller Chill.
  5. AmyOops
the other thing that has helped me. I ask the blogs i really like to please add me to there blog roll. from one site alone they send about 500 readers to me.
  6. offendedblogger
Reading and commenting on lots of blogs helps, too. Of course having a name like offendedblogger makes people more curious to click on my profile in other people's comments.

Join a forum of mostly non-bloggers, participate, stir up controversy a bit and that draws people in who may never even read blogs, too.

Stumbleupon is great. Humor-blogs brought in a bit of traffic, but not as much as BC, Stumble, Entrecard and organic Google searches.

I attack it from all angles, really.
    1. EavesdropWriter
Yes, good advice. Hadn't thought about the non-blogging forums. Note to self.

And your avatar is great, too. Just suggestive enough without being slutty. No offense to all the sluts out there, I'm just sayin'.
    2. offendedblogger
lol up close, her hands are shielding her eyes as if she is watching something potentially offensive. It appears she has them behind her head though when it is tiny like this.

    Stupid humor blogs.com

I just clicked on a link, which is supposed to vote for a blog. Here's what I get.

Sorry, we couldn't determine which post brought you here. Check the list below for recent posts from this site. If this is your blog and you would like to change your link format so that Humor-Blogs.com can find your posts

Someone needs to give them some competition.

I see you've been blogging humor since April and you've really gotten into posting starting in June. (Assuming I'm looking at the right blog.)

You seem to be getting a fair amount of diggs and your stuff is funny, so it simply comes down to slogging. It takes time. (Unless you're Chelle of course.)

Keep hitting other peoples blogs, especially the really funny ones like mine.

Comment, comment, comment. Then comment some more. Humor-blogs.com is a great place, not only for getting your stuff out there in the beginning, but also for the humor-bloggers you'll meet. Most of them really want to help you. (Cause unlike me most of them have big heads.)
  9. DrowseyMonkey
Well, not every post of mine is always "humourous" but I do have my blog listed under "humour" and what I found worked for me was to visit other blogs that I found funny ... and then comment & get to know the blogger.

I'm on humour blogs .com and all those other things too, but I never go there and never pay attention to them. If you look on my blog you can see all the places I'm listed and the only place I actually go is here. And I do get traffic from BC, not sure if I get traffic from the other places.

I think it's all about one-on-one contact with other bloggers tho more than the social networking sites.

I think it's also hard when you have 2 blogs listed somewhere, because you can't wear a different avatar when you want to. If I want to promote my photo blog, I have this DrowseyMonkey avatar ... like, what's that got to do with photography? LOL
    1. EavesdropWriter
Yeah, it's challenging to split personalities on blogs. And also twisted fun.

I made 2 tragic mistakes when I started my blog--
I mis-spelled "humor" when submitting my site to catalogs, and ended up ranked #8 on blogs dealing with a popular GMC-owned automobile which got poor gas mileage.
I also have the diction of an 8 year old.

Is it any wonder why I get 11 readers a day?
    1. Donlewis
Could have been worse. There are probably even more "The Simpsons" blogs you'd have to compete with.
  11. ThriftShopRomantic
PS-- One thing I wanted to remember to share-- initially, I was really worried that no one would want to read a long-ish humor post...

Thinking folks really only wanted to see a quick funny photo, or a video or something?

Nope. It won't hold the attention span of everyone, of course, but readers are there.

It'll be interesting to hear from you in, say, three months time about all your progress. I think you'll be feeling better about it by then.
    1. EavesdropWriter
I'm glad you mentioned that. I am more inclined to write a satirical post of average length. I like using humor with words more than pictures, but I see the quick laugh with an image is more appealing to the masses. I experimented with a couple amusing photos recently, but I still prefer demonstrating my cleverness in writing.
    2. DrowseyMonkey
You're a talented writer, so I don't think you should rely on just photos. Altho having a mix is good.
  12. tiggyblog
I've found Google and non-blogging forums to be a great source of traffic, and I've been featured on a few sites including ysbunobutyes.com, which really helped! I got tonnes of traffic from Stumbleupon today... so really there is no one right way of doing it!

I joined humor blogs just after it stopped reviewing sites so no luck with that so far, hopefully the new system will work out better.

Mind you I got featured on world-sex-news.com recently, you would not believe the number of hits I got... I never knew the site was so popular!
    1. EavesdropWriter
That's a crazy site! "The Sexiest Vegetarian Blogger"? I'll be damned, a humor market I hadn't thought about.
  13. pointlessbanter
Sigh... I am just going to write a book and sell it... It will be easier.
    1. Donlewis
Can I have a free copy? You know, professional courtesy?
  14. surveygirl46
What works for me is I post my blog somewhere and assuming I'll get no hits anyway, I post a suicide threat video on Craigslist with a link to my blog. So to get to my "suicide" the reader has to click on my blog first. Sometimes, just sometimes...I get a clicker that actually gets me. Everyone else usually leaves angry comments on the You Tube posting or at my blog about being duped - so if nothing else, I'm at least getting attention - Negative or not LOL
    1. nultygoestopartick
      it works Your quite funny.
  15. flamingpoodle
    My blog has no humour.

However, I get a fair amount of traffic from delicious:
    delicious.com/

I also don't get much traffic from social networking sites other than BC. When I removed my Entrecard Widget, my traffic actually trippled. I don't think this is because of Entrecard though, because I hadn't posted for a while. I'm glad I got rid of it though.
    1. surveygirl46
Actually Stumble Upon has been very good to me - besides actually having a few people who are whacked like me seek me out, it's also a good site for "filing" websites you want to keep and revisit again. PS - BC is also great - from that comment i made a few hours ago, grew an elaborational post on how to increase your traffic by tricking readers into visiting your blog - LOL; BC is good for ideas..
  16. flamingpoodle
    I just visited this blog:
    divacosmos.blogspot.com/

    Looks interesting.
  17. surveygirl46
Your blog is cool:) I just wish it wasn't SO serious and depressing LOL
  18. nultygoestopartick
I just blog away and get about a hundred hits a day I don't know if it's good or bad.
trying this for more traffic but i will wait and see.

    Take a peep
  19. tarraslovan
Same as the post above. If I really am in a blogging mood I seem to get 100 hits a day. On days I'm not- I get less. I have an aversion to social networking so that doesn't help.

I truly can't figure out how it works at all. Total mystery.
  20. danielpeci
talk a lot of BS and lots of insults also, that always works!

  21. surveygirl46
Oh also, My blog clicks ROSE up seemingly overnite in June - then i realized I had been posting alot of slams on STD and Herpes dating sites; etc. also i learned to photoshop and I've been photoshopping Facebook stuff. Alot of my traffic apparently comes from itchy people who like to cyber-farm or from individuals who want to meet itchy people and learn to cyberfarm..
  22. surveygirl46
@Nultygoestopartick - thanks for the compliment
  23. owlbarn
I recently started to use Flickr, and to my surprise I am getting some noticeable traffic from there.

Entrecard works too. I am using it on my blog.
  24. bringbackpluto
    We're some humor some serious.

Stumble has been good. Propeller too.

    BC of course.

Entrecard not so much, but did meet some cool people. THE GUYS left though.

Networking with other bloggers. Link exchange etc.

Slowly building an audience with solid content.
  25. brianomaracroft
I think you need to be as active as possible in the online world, and on as many fronts as possible. I encourage my Facebook fans to tell their friends, who should tell their friends, and so on. Same goes for Twitter. Hey, it worked for Paranormal Activity!
