Remnant of the Roman Saturnalia festival, later supplanted by Sol Invictus. Incorpated into Christian mythology despite no known birth date for Jesus of Nazareth, if he indeed existed. Not a big fan, never really understood the fuss.

There is historical proof of Jesus existence And It is not a BC thing it's AD things there are many to proof
    2. pillownaut
Wishful thinking at best on both those points.

Getting together (well, we still live together) and exchanging presents after a nice, big dinner.

The religious aspect of it ... meh. It's nice to just celebrate every once in a while.

watching my kids open their presents. I love it when they get all excited. Last year we bought them both horses. That was really fun for them to go to the barn and find them. Oh and cooking lots and lots of food

me too. I generally only enjoy cooking for holidays and special occasions. The rest of the time it's a chore.

Spending time with my family, watching my kids opening their presents, and seeing them excited and happy. I'm not even a Christian, but I grew up with Christmas, and I love it.

One thing with all due respect, is that I don't believe that the Christ in Christmas should be replaced with an X.
Imagine if our birthdays were celebrated by sending cards and greetings to X.
    1. weblogian
with all due respect, These are just thing and ways of the world. I think what matters is What Christmas is to you.

Even non Christmas celebrate it. Share, give etc that is the best part of it. After all it is the most celebrated and loved festival around the world.

      I agree..we celebrate xmas.its soo much fun.
for us it means..meeting old pals and old classmate/college mates in their natural habitat and partying!!

The word "Christianity" and "Christmas" have been abbreviated for more than 1,000 years and the tradition does not symbolize disrespect or anonymity.

The "X" in Xmas is from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the word Χριστός, Greek for "Christ." References in Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as early as AD 1021 show Christ referred to as "XP" or "Xt".

The letter χ used in ancient abbreviations is still widely seen in Eastern Orthodox icons depicting Jesus. See: History of the Labarum.

Yule or Saturnalia, it really depends if I'm in an Anglo-Saxon or a Roman mood. :-)

The one day of the year when if I want to go to a restaurant it pretty much has to be a Chinese restaurant. I don't have a big problem with that. I like Chinese food.

It is the season when Krampus ravages the countryside, whipping nubile women and carring off naughty children in his sack...

I enjoy the pagan traditions of Christmas along with the Christian ones. Santa for instance. Santa is a reflection of Woden/Odin, the great Germanic god who was the inspiration for the wizard archetype like Merlin. In legend Woden appeared to mortals as a bearded old man carrying a staff and wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Woden inspired Father Winter/Christmas and our jolly old Santa. And Woden/Santa had his elves, pagan spirits to assist him in his work. Its great to have paganism as a vibrate part of Christmas. It adds to the colorfulness of Christmas.

    christmas = family reunion
    1. Agit8r
or a drunken brawl... depending on the family...
  14. footiam
Christmas is still far away; but since I don't celebrate it; it only means a public holiday and that's great.

It is right in the middle of the long summer holidays here when schools and universities are closed for 8 gorgeous weeks of sun, surf and sand - no cleaning, no cooking, no students, no ironing. We live in bathing suits!

I am not a Christian so Christmas has no meaning for me, but summer is the best time of year.

love and giving and of course the birth of Christ

    Days for big shopping
  18. Agit8r
terrible traffic on the roads... people acting very diffently from Jesus....
  19. LGramlich
    It's the time...
...to avoid leaving the house at all costs, due to horrible drivers & packed shopping venues & restaurants.
...of 30% off, after marking everything up 300%.
...when I have to put up with hundreds of people wishing me a merry christmas at work while being explicitly prohibited by my employer (here in the "land of the free,") to mention my atheism, if not downright antitheism.
...of being put on the spot at work, as the only person there who tries to obey the law that states that we cannot accept gifts of any kind.
...when many, local radio stations play nothing but Xmas tunes for a month, leaving me very little to listen to in my car (since my CD player crapped out 2 years ago.)
...when my regularly scheduled TV programming is preempted by tree lightings, parades, masses & other BS.

Spending time with family I don't get to see all the time! And of course a really big meal.

Presents even though I never give any...
  22. Onchong
Christmas is giving of love everyday.
    1. LGramlich
Shouldn't that be every day, though, rather than saving it just for Xmas?
  23. patco
For me it is a special day, which I can be with my family
  24. luciani
    happy holiday
  25. PureCommonSense
There is the religious thought to it...but in practice its more of a time for us to get together with relatives and be happy. Easter is a little more of a religious holiday.
  26. Theresa111
    I do not celebrate Xmas.

I do however celebrate Christmas and The Giving, Winter Season.
    1. Agit8r
it's an abreviation, like "Xian religion"
    2. jeremyjanson
"XIAN???" What are we a province in China?

    Another excuse for mass consumerism!

Welcome back! I remember you from when I first came here.

1.) The (Observed) birthdate of my Savior.

2.) A great time for family, friends and to celebrate the year before heading back to Tech.

The penultimate time for enjoying all the beauty and joy that festivals can bring into our lives. Singing, feasting, decorating, playing games together and enjoying fellowship with family, friends and even total strangers. I'll never forget the first Christmas season when I took my little boy around the neighborhood to look at the light displays and he was so excited he wanted to run from house to house to see what new wonders might come next.
