Thanks for the comment, and you are entered into the prize draw.

It would be good to get some good tips on building a community which leaves comments regularly.

Was hoping to get some tips on how you have all built your communities.

I held a contest where commenters were entered to win 25 every week
    1. Englishtillidie
25 what ? sorry for asking
    2. Englishtillidie
Is it really worth paying out $25 a month?

I threaten to kill a puppy if the post doesn't get a hundred comments before the day ends.

I had a week where I promised to donate $1 to Unite for Sight for every comment that was left (I chose a charity that was related to the topic of my blog). It worked pretty well and I've noticed that so far the number of comments has stayed up since that week.

I put pot pourri in little bowls round my posts and then hover in the back ground near the comment box with a threatening look on my face.

Write posts on a regular schedule...

Get to know other bloggers I respect and enjoy, and comment on their blogs...

Try to write quality posts folks can identify with, get a laugh from or gain some value from...

    Respond to comments...

And ask relevant questions, showing I'm open to interaction

Ahhhh I wondered why I have never had a comment, I was beginning to think they were some great mythological beast akin to the griffin or the legendary bald hamster of old Munich town.

I think people might be hesitate to correspond with an aarvark is all. It's the puddle of pee in your avatar that might make them suspect, "This is going to be messy."

(Or else all your commenters were eaten by the legendary bald hamster of old Munich town.)

You think I should have some sort of disclaimer on my blog telling people that the puddle before me was already there when I got there and not to worry because I licked it to see what it was and I can assure them that it is not urine at all, but lovely comment juice.
I also believe people don't have the same hatred for Aardvarks they used to have, Aardvarkism thank god is a thing of the past.

For one thing, I do shameless promotion here: like mentioning a post about a speaker at Obama's prayer service, and a silly headline or two ( anotherwaronterrorblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/isna-hamas-dr-ingrid-mattson-an... ).

Making it possible, and fairly easy, for people to post comments is something else I do. I mean to say: making someone sign up with your blog, before they can comment?

Writing about topics that someone might, possibly, be interested in: and have an opinion about.

Not making people wait for the moderator to approve the comment. There's a bit of positive reinforcement in seeing you comment only seconds after posting it.

Regarding Moderation. 99% of my comments are SPAM so it is a fine line between getting instant feedback and wading through lots of pointless fake comments. At this point only comments without links are not moderated on my site.
    2. inbusiness
You have a good point there Norski - I assume you still read all comments and have to delete the spam ones that get through Askimet, assuming you use this plugin
    3. Norski
About spam: at this point, it's an issue, but not a major one. Most spam gets blocked automatically, but some spammers are now using some very smart AI, or maybe low-paid people, to get past.

And yes, I go on search-and-destroy missions on a fairly regular basis.

inbusiness, thanks for the good words.

    intresting learning a lot here

Here's another way to promote comments - at least, indirectly.

Start an interesting discussion of your blog here at BlogCatalog. With a link, of course.

BlogCatalogers are notorious for nosing around to see what their neighbors are doing, and some leave comments.

If you're lucky, some BlogCataloger will link to you: or I'll do a micro-review in Apathetic Lemming of the North, like this one ( apatheticlemming.blogspot.com/2009/01/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about.h... ).

(Related to this is the technique of shamelessly putting links to your posts on related discussion threads. Do in on unrelated threads, and you're in violation of TOS. Also, in dire danger of ticking off the better part of the BlogCatalog community.)

      You are welcome Norski
