I prefer an on-line reader so that I can read at home and at work (not that I do that... read at work that is...

Ok then what do other people use, I have so many feeds in Google Reader its more mess than it is useful.

I have a really good one on my PowerBook called Newsfire...

That beats Google Reader hands down. Too bad I can't find something like that for my Windows Laptop.

According to Feedburner my most popular feed readers are...

    Google Feedfetcher
    A Java-based feed reader
    Netvibes
    Bloglines
Safari RSS / Apple Syndication Framework
    Firefox Live Bookmarks
    My Yahoo
    NetNewsWire
    NewsGator Online
    Windows RSS Platform
    HanRSS (Korean)
    LiteFeeds
    MacReporter
    Outlook 2007
    RSS Bandit
    RSS Menu/1.10.3
    RSSOwl
    Vienna

NetNewsWire is a Mac-only application (I use it), and so are MacReporter and Vienna. (I'm a Mac user.) RSSOwl is free and full of features. It's written in Java, which can turn some people off, but which also makes it multi-platform: www.rssowl.org/

Be that as it may, go to a site like Download.com or VersionTracker where you can download different shareware and freeware apps and try them out for yourself. The queswtion isn't which is best, but which works best for you. You will also find user reviews that might be helpful. Maybe PC users can suggest other software sites they like?

NewsGator probably also offers a Windows newsreader, but it won't be free.

That said, you have a tech blog. Doesn't that mean you should be out there doing research and giving us the answers?

This is part of my research to see how other bloggers work. See below.

Firefox has a reader built in, which works well for me. Plus, Firefox is a LOT nicer than explorer.

That reminds me, you can also get an extension or plugin or whatever to read news in Thunderbird.

Among the top are News Gator, FeedDemon, Bloglines, and Google Reader.

    I use My Yahoo.

I use one that's just called FeedReader. It's nothing fancy, but it does what it's supposed to.

I use feedreader as well. Out of the dozens of others i have tried i always go back to feedreader.
    2. bornliar
thegoodknife, have you had problems with it crashing, too?

I got one too many crashes yesterday and now I'm giving RSSOwl a test run.

I use bloglines & really like it.

Ditto for me... Bloglines has been a real time saver (and time waster, now I can access more in a shorter space of time... sigh).

I have feedemon, but normally just deal with Google reader.

I use Bloglines, I can't believe how much time I used to waste before I got into rss, now I have my bloglines tab open all the time, and I can keep up with my list no problems.

I am looking for an original way of sorting through RSS feeds.

Like for instance this is how Robert Scoble gets through over 600 feeds...

Here's a post from the ultimate RSS Guru Adam Pash

It seems many people use Bloglines and Google Reader, and while Google Reader can be awesome at sorting through hundreds of feeds, I am curious what can help me filter through the noise faster.

NetNewsWire lets you sort with "smart folders". That's on the Mac, but I imagine that there are Windows apps with similar features. Since NewsGator bought NetNewsWire, maybe there Windows app. is a place to look? Maybe too their online service, which they've recently overhauled?

OK I thought you all would be interested in seeing the conclusion to my quest to find a better RSS Reader. Check it out

BTW stoneman you get some props in the article.

I just use Google Reader. Nothing to download plus it's very simple and easy to use.

A lot of people are happy with that. Indeed, if someone doesn't know RSS, that is a great place to go. (Most of my students don't know RSS. I'm trying to get them to go that route, but it takes time.) But ccarey76 is talking about scalability. What application is up to more feeds? What lets you organize them best? Perhaps any further contributions could give an idea of how many feeds they deal with? At present I have "only" 46, so I suppose NetNewsWire is something of a luxury for me. Still, for me it works faster than an online reader. It's also a lot easier for subscribing to feeds. I click on the RSS symbol in the address field of Safari or Firefox . . . and I'm subscribed.
