Parents approve of the sex-positive approach to teaching rather than the “Abstinence-only” programs that give reasons to refrain from all sexual activity outside of a heterosexual marriage. Parents don’t have to worry about whether they are sending a mixed message, upward of 90 percent of Americans have sex before or outside of marriage and many are in a same-sex relationship. Sex-positive classes teach respecting themselves and with that know safety comes first, so getting a good education before starting a family and avoiding disease should be their number one priority when it comes to having sex and sexual relations.

I agree. I don't know how many people can claim abstinence their whole lives. Kids are going to have sex. Just reinforce safe sex and bring in some speakers, young people who have gotten pregnant and stuff.

I also agree and have blogged on this in my personal blog. IMO it's irresponsible for adults to deprive adolescents of full and factual information so they can make their own sexual health and reproductive decisions based on the best information available.

I was appalled at the policies of the Bush Administration that established $170 - $190 million per year for federal funded abstinence only faith based programs in the USA.

Worse still during Bush's reign the only agencies and organizations that could received funding for undertaking sex education programming in Africa where AIDS is rampant were those that taught abstinence only. To me this amounted to exporting ignorance as the studies conducted plainly show that those teens registered in and attending abstinence only programs in the USA were having unprotected sex and had alarming STD rates.

Check out this thread for some more facts. You won't be disappointed. www.blogcatalog.com/politics/discuss/entry/abstinence-only-programs-ineffec...
