If you live in a country you were not born in, where where you born and where did you emigrate to?

Where were your parents and grandparents born and raised?

My family came from Russia (now the Ukraine) to Australia. My huband's family came from Czechoslovakia to Australia.

My two daughters in law came from parents born and raised in Damascus (Syria) and Alexandria (Egypt).

Not boring at all. I am entranced. Texas sounds more exotic to my ears than does Odessa or Vilna.

My mom was raised by an uncle and her real mom died when she was really young and her father was not in the picture that much. I do remember the one that raised her and he was from onteona alabama. My family has lived in the United States for some time.

But my Great Grandmother was born in southern Italy (Calabria). She came to this country alone, when she was 19. Her brother had come two years before, entering through the Port of Baltimore. She only knew he worked for the railroad. So, she took the train west through Maryland and West Virginia, asking after him at every stop. She found him in Fairmont, West Virginia, after 8 months of searching.

Our European connection is a hodgepodge of Italy, Romania and Czech Republic. My Italian grandfather helped build one of New York City's first river tunnels.

I was born in Oakland, CA. My mother was born in San Francisco, CA. My father was born in Puerto Rico. My grandparents are from Ohio. I think the only person born elsewhere without going back really far is my great grandmother who was German.

Mother: Mostly East Texas for 29 years, though she also spent moderate amounts of time (months) in Hong Kong and Copenhagen because Grandma worked for Braniff airlines. Hong Kong is still her favorite city, though she hasn't been there in years.

Father: Grew up all over country, including MN, MD, DC, VA, NH, VT, WI, IA, TX (where he met my mother) and FL. Grandpa was a travelling computer scientist building advanced mainframes and later supercomputers in the 50's, 60's and 70's and code breaking for the NSA.

    Maternal Grandparents: Texas/Tennessee, mostly Dallas

Paternal Grandparents: Iowa, fresh off the corn farm in a Norwegian American town.

I myself was born in Western WA, which my dad moved to because of the Navy.

My parents were born in Canada (as I was); three of four grandparents were born in Canada.

My frandfather was born in England, but his family tree goes back to Wales.

On my mother's side, the family goes back at least to late 1700s in Canada.

That's an interesting history. 18th century Canada was a rugged place!

MidwestMom, great granny was a brave young thing, wasn't she? Nowadays we spend the entire day weeping, in bed, if we chip our newly manicured finger nails. Your relative was a mere teenager, a girl on her own, and presumably didn't speak a word of English!

Onchong, but do you live in China, Spain or the Philippines yourself?
