I am just curious where you get your images for blog posts... search engines? Friends? Other blogs? Or do you not use images?

Try wikimedia, or wikipedia, click on the image, and you can learn about it's licensing. MAKE SURE you understand the licence! Some can be used any way you want, including commercial. Others have restrictions like "must credit author", etc.

This is such a wide-open question - I mean, it depends entirely on the content of the blog where you might go looking for images. I am an artist and photographer so of course I use my own. But someone with a political blog might look in different places than someone doing a blog about the entertainment in Outer Blootavia ...

I usually use pictures I've taken (though they usually aren't very good), but sometimes, I use pictures my boyfriend takes and use them. His only stipulation is that the picture link to his Picasa album when someone clicks on the picture (which is automatic if you let Picasa format the picture link).

I tend to avoid photos that are not my own because of all them copyright issues. if you were looking for a source of "safe" photos, here's a good place to start: freestockphotos.com/index.html
[but like celticbydesign said - pay attention to the requirements - in this case, like most others, "free" doesn't mean you can use without crediting the source!] -
I know a new way to get free photos.I read it in a blog called Rule the Web:
www.ruletheweb.net/my_weblog/2007/06/free_photos_you.html
you are free to download and use photos from www.Morguefile.com, a large searchable archive of beautiful, high-resolution photos. You can even use them for commercial purposes. -
I take my own (hobby), see www.flickr.com/photos/marcweiersmuller/
If you are interested please do let know me which ones you like and the context where you would use them. If it is for a small non profit blog, I would very likely agree for you to use it free (small size pics only).
I would then require to give me credit and print a usual copyright statement linking back to my blog.
I want to see whether this would raise my ranking and bring traffic. Also it is quite pleasing to see people valuing my pics.

I pay an annual fee to use images from www.clipart.com but also use my members' photos (as my blog is used for my home exchange business) plus images from articles/blogs I mention/link to in posts.
Cheers -
Hey! I agree with the others. Take your own when you can. But if you can't, here's the absolute best. Most are free. They're good pix, and they're photographers that just want their stuff on the web. But be sure to give the photographers credit, and if they ask for it, let them know you're using their image. An artist likes to know. Here's the link: www.sxc.hu/

Well actually you should not use a photo and tell afterwards the author even if you gave the author credits for it. You should seek permission first then use the photo when you have obtained permission. Credits is different from having right to use a picture which is define generally in the copyrights statment.
For me I think photos are not like text, you can't really quote an extract, photographers are therefore more touchy about their photos than writer would generally be about an article. On Flickr people complain regularly about photo theft on the web: they find their photo being used without their prior knowledge and permission. This is perceived very badly even if the credits are there.
Also photographers may not agree of their pictures or this specific picture to be used at all some like me will require clear understand of the usage of that picture. And then on per case by case assess the merit and take a decision. For instance I would not want my pictures to appear on a porn website, highly political website, .... you get the idea. There is also pictures that I consider personal (family) or picture where for legal or commercial reason I cannot have reproduction made at all.
Personally if I find one of my pictures used anywhere and the person didn't contact me before even if there is a credit I would be mighty pissed-off. I construct this as rude behaviour and possibly request the picture to be removed. I would not allow that person to use any of pictures again.
Just a thought from a fellow photographer.

Marco, I use SXC and most of the photographers state "that you are more than welcome to use my pictures just let me know where it goes..." Some photographers I met were just happy to get a link back and their photography shown.. some seemed more cautious about it... quite frankly I think if you have your photography up on sites like flickr and stock photos, it's presumed that people can download it unless there's a copyright mark on the photo. I have been talking to a lot of photographers for my community photoblog and there seems to be different thoughts about this.
so I think you have the right if the photographers state it is OK and also if the photographer states that you need to ask permission first, Then of course you have to ask permission.
Some photographers seemed incredibly cautious about showing their photograph which quite frankly I didn't think that they were that good and there are photographers who take stunning photography who are more than happy to share their works..-
Good point dharmagypsy7. Flickr allows different types of copyright license.
My license is all copyright reserved. I am clearly more cautious than the average but I would very likely say yes to anybody who actually asks nicely. As you pointed out some people may be more lax about photo usages; it is a very personal thing.
I have also blocked downloads on Flicker as I heard some people don't bother with the license thing. They just go and take whatever they fancy. Once a picture is gone in the wild Internet there is no easy way to stop it and recover the damage.
Anyway one can't assume that because a photo is on a website - being a photo sharing website or not - it is free to copy and use. And trust me some do. I even read in the Flickr groups that some people make illegal copies and then sell them on Ebay. Absolutely amazing!

Interesting reading SXC standard terms:

Two solutions for the time being:
(1) WikiCommons : a great library of images that are either Public Domain (and therefore useable) or protected under Creative Commons licences (which is what I use for my blog btw). What I like about this site is that for every image, the requirements for using it are clearly stated, so you're not left in any doubt.
(2) Make my own, either from my own photos, or from screen captures if I'm writing a HowTo article (like for sismordia.blogspot.com/2007/06/how-to-make-your-own-seismicity-map.html)
In general, I try to play it safe, and make sure I have the permission to post an image before I do so. -
I buy stock pictures on stockexpert.com and other sites, or will take a picture myself, or will take a snapshot of a blog, and create a thumbnail (and of course link to the blog). Some people will just take any picture they find on the net regardless of licence, but I prefer either paying for the pics, or taking a picture myself.

I applaud your comment. I love my photos and I have been only using my own photos in my two blogs. I treat every photo as a valuable asset of its owner unless it is stated for free distribution. And people using photos without permission is really taking the intellectual properties of photographers in their own hands without consideration of copyright. I really admire at your comment and I hope more people see your point.

I take some of my own photos and use photos by friends and family (easy since so much of my blog is autobiographical.) Sometimes I use material from wikimedia, if it is relevent. If I am uncertain about permissions, then I am likely just to link to the image as opposed to hosting it myself. If I don't have appropriate images, I just don't post an image.

You can get it from search engines or websites but make sure that its under creative commons license. Before you copy and paste an image make sure the image in not copyrighted.

The photos I've posted to date on blogs are ones I've "captured" or "taken" with a serviceable digital camera, and edited with Corel Photo-Paint.
Eventually, I'll probably post ones that I've created with other software: but that will be a while.
I'm glad that so many BlogCatalogers are aware of the licensing and intellectual property rights involved here. -

I have a list of sites where free images can be obtained for your blog on my Resources Page (scroll down to Images and you will find over 60 sites listed).

I buy them from istockphoto.com or dreamstime.com. I try to play it safe, meaning I buy or find free stock imagery. It's too risky to lift images from other sites. Frankly, I'm surprised that so many people don't see a problem with that.
