Some say it's Chicago. I live here and I can say there certainly are thousands of them. I haven't eaten at even 1/3 of them, but so far they've been pretty good. What city do think has had the best food / dining experience that you've visited or lived in?

I'm gonna go with NY. I haven't been to very many cities but NY is so diverse with culture that is seems to have everything.

Had amazing deep dish pizza at Genos in Chicago...

Had amazing semi-Chinese at the China Grill in NYC...

Had astounding seafood crepes at Petunia's in New Orleans (I hope it's still there post-hurricane)...

There are so many great places around the country, the world. You narrow it down to just one, you miss out.

I like St. Louis style pizza and toasted raviolis!!
Also loved Geno's in Chi Town!!

Petunia's is located in the French Quarter, the highest ground in the city of New Orleans.

It is still listed in the local phone book. The website is here:

Thanks, Dotartdude! Glad to know Petunia's is still running. I still think fondly of that meal.

Well, duh. But they have JESUS making the food, so that's sort of cheating, isn't it?

here in quebec province we have some great food and restaurant!
we are well known for food and nightlife!

Maybe the question should be expanded.
    Where's the best American food
Where's the best SOUL food (yeah I know it's a subculture of American but...)
Where's the best Euro International (wouldn't Disney win that one?)
    Where's the best Asian
And then maybe where's the best out of all those combined.

As good as NY is (where I lived for 10 years) I still feel San Francisco covers so much ground. But now that Chicago has had a huge Latin and Asian influx we really have gotten a broader pallet than our normal strong showing for American and Soul. And even though I lied in Tokyo I liked the food better in Korea!

Cape Town has the best and freshest sea food! No questions...

New York has the most variety of foods. But, the quality varies wildly.

Can we get some hollering for San Francisco! You name it, we have it and we'll throw in some Sourdough too. How about chowder in a sourdough bowl; Italian in North Beach; a crab sandwich on the coastside; artichoke and green chille soup and lollaberry pie at Duartes; or authentic Mexican in the mission? Maybe you want vegetarian or vegan cuisine? What about tapas and fondue? SF is an amazing city for culturally diverse, delectable dining.

      Did I mention garlic fries?
    2. rcpopart
I'm getting hungry just reading this. I'm convinced in America then that I'll have to come to SF to confirm these claims of greatness!

Dayton okay I am kidding. It would have to be New York for me.

I'd go to Boston or Vancouver. London has everything though. Tough decision.
  16. zoom56ok
    London dude? Seriously. Dude? DUDE!
    1. rcpopart
now that's just funny. London. Good one:-)

London has great food! If you don't think so, you've either never been here - or at least not in the last 10 years!
  17. BassDem
Yep. Lots of choices. Not just bangers and mash or fish n chips over there. You can smell good Chinese food from China town even while walking through Soho. Ever been to Knightsbridge? Lots of great kebab shops all over London too.

    I'm with AainaA - Paris.
  19. machinehuman
The best ones that I know - New York, Paris, Rio, Buenos Aires and Bombay. But I'm with Cervantes, the best spice for food is hunger, so I'll put Amsterdam in it just for the munches
  20. zoom56ok
Ok so I stand informed Bass.

At any rate, at least informally, I'd say NYC is going to be the winner, with Paris coming in 2nd (or more precisely French speaking places).

And Geno's Pizza coming in 3rd hahaha. You know, you can get those in the grocery store now. I PROMISE you it is the best frozen pizza you'll ever buy.

Ever tasted Indian food?tamil nadu and andhra rock in terms of taste...pay a visit to India ..ull knw
    1. machinehuman
Indian food is delicious!!!! I LOVE India.

I definitely believe it's Chicago, but I must admit that I don't have gourmet tastes. In Chicago, you can get a great pizza, a great Italian beef sandwich, some excellent homemade soups, really good bread, etc. If you're looking for the best sushi or something more esoteric, I have no idea.

I lived in New York a long time and the food is amazing! I grew up in Boston, with great lobsters, clams, chowder, sub sandwiches, beans, etc. Travelling the food has been best in Paris, Siena, New Orleans, San Francisco, Copenhagen, and Rome.
  24. rcpopart
Rome, eh? According to Anthony Bourdain, Rome isn't as bad as he thought it would be.
  25. zoom56ok
Alright! I was afraid things were winding down. MadameX I'm sure rc will join me and thank for tossing Chicago a nod.

And rc, Bourdain has been surprised a lot on that show. You see the finale, when he thought he could still handle the kitchen?

Anyway John Chow went out to dinner in Vancouver last night and the food pix are AMAZING. Everybody knows the URl right?

Dubai has a great variety - 140 nationalities live and cook here with every conceivable variety!
  27. chicky401
I would have to say NYC. You can get the best pizza there! I have been to 40 of the 50 states in the US, Montreal Canada and England. I would definitely say NY. Unless you like buffets, then I would say the casinos in Atlantic City. They are the best buffets, the Borgata better be for $30 a person-lol
  28. csiunatc
    Rome, Italy without a doubt.

If you are talking about US. The best dining experiences i've had were surprisingly in the Denver / Mountain area.

    Penang, Malaysia
  30. Houseonahill
Of course the Chi, and New Orleans (Dooky Chase, and Oceana Grill, mmmmm good) of course!
  31. sunandsin
San Sebastian in Spain is famous for its luxurious tapas..

It is also the city with most Michelin stars when compared to inhabitants.
  32. zenobia
I live in New York, but I grew up in Dallas, a surprisingly great food town. Dallas chefs took the best of southern, southwestern, Mexican, Louisiana and nouvelle and blended it into an exciting fusion.
  33. exinco
did some of you watch 'bizarre food'. ha, that was the place for best food.
  34. zoom56ok
sunandsin, I guess Michelin is some kind of food rating? I don't much about that.

exinco, that stuff on bizarre seems to be more novelty "food."

Clearly the only way to solve this is that you must each find the best dish in your city and send it me here in Chicago!
  35. creative666
I still go with Cape Town I lived in London for fives years and it also have excellent food - depends where you go, keep away from the tourist attractions as you'll be over charged and the food will be thrown together... but if you are willing to walk off the beaten track then you'll find some lovely restaurants... I can think of three or four in Soho right now
  36. lthemanz
I'd go for Penang. A multi cultural multi cuisine.

London has the best and most diverse choice of food in any city in the world. But the flip side of the coin is that London is also home to some of the worst palces to eat that you could ever imgaine. It is all down to research and staying away from the tourist traps, but then again some tourists wouldn't know what great food tasted like.
  38. timethief
Vancouver, B.C. is a huge city with a diverse population. There are a wealth of wonderful ethnic and seafood restaurants there, as well as, street food vendors and I love eating at them when I visit the mainland.
  39. yileen
    Penang, Malaysia!

People in Kuala Lumpur drive all the way up to Penang for the food. I know some who take several flights home from overseas for the food too!

London and Kansas City-different, but both the best
