Topics: blog platform, blogger, wordpress.com
I am just doing a private poll on how many folks like blogger.com vs wordpress.com.
Also, would like to know why.
I personally teach folks Wordpress.com to start blogging. I like the themes and functionality. But I like Blogger for adding Google ads.
User Comments
-
I personally believe that blogger is definitely more user friendly that Wordpress. I tried them both and I am comfortable with blogger more.
-
Your poll are not that worth and necessary. What about live space, typepad, wordpress self hosted blog etc.
If it come to blogging self hosted soft if the best and I prefer blogging soft by wordpress.org.
This "versus" type of post and poll should be stop as it confuse new blogger. -
I use blogger and read only blogger blogs. wordpress have too much pop-ups, I would think twice before clicking on wordpress link.
-
The popups and adverts on some free wordpress blogs are not visible to those who have a wordpress.com account or blog.
You could ask your readers to register at wordpress to avoid them, but it's a bit of a drag.
Which is all another reason to self host.
-
Something I forgot - people who use Firefox browser will never see an advert on a wp blog, because Matt Mullenweg likes firefox.
(Probably because firefox is the only fully compliant web browser around that will display your code the way your intended. IE go their own way, to no-one's surprise)
And to answer your question, whether the reader sees adverts depends upon them.
1. They must be NOT using firefox,
2. They must be logged out of their wordpress account (or not have one),
3. They must be NOT coming from another wp blog.
Clear as mud? I know.
Here's a great blog post I found the other day about just how WP make money.

wordpress self hosted, otherwise wordpress.com

Blogger. But interested in knowing the vantages of WordPress. More Comments on posts, someone told me. is it true?
-
Thanks for all the insights and the time taken to share them. I purposely did not reference Wordpress.org but rather Wordpress.com. Of course, Wordpress.org does not compare, at all,to blogger.com.
However, many use the HOSTED blogger.com and wordpress.com when starting out in blogging. And as one person already stated, when ready for more power and functionality Wordpress.org.
There are, of course, more easy self-hosted platform as someone else also pointed out.
However, the more common ones are blogger and wordpress.com
It would be interesting to know what other platforms folks are using. -
Okay, now that you've clarified
As a beginning blogger, I chose blogger & it was good as long as I didn't want to change anything. Great for just writing.
Then I moved on to wordpress.com, and found it better to customise & be creative with the look of my site. (and now I have my own self-hosted wp blogs)
So I suppose it depends upon what the blog is going to be about, and the users' preference for dashboards.
I'd recommend that any new blogger try both platforms and choose the one that suits them. They're the one who has to work with it.

Wordpress works best when you are hosting it on your own site. The "free" wordpress blogs on the wordpress site has pop-ups and hyperlinks keywords on high traffic blogs to ads/other sites.
I use to have wordpress, but since my host died, I decided to stick with blogger for now in order to get back some traffic. Blogger blogs tend to show up higher in the search engines anyway, so if you're looking to earn money from the ads on your blogs, it's best to go for blogger.-
That would make sense to have a blogger blog if you want ad activity. PLUS THEY ARE OWNED BY GOOGLE so it is in the interest of Google to keep them high on their search.
Wordpress.com DOES NOT ALLOW ADS, however, like the homeless shelter example I used earlier, if there are any ads it would be from them. But if you put them on the site you CAN BE SHUT DOWN. Also, you can also easily report any Wordpress.com blog for spam, etc, same as blogger
Now, if you are getting pop ups from a Wordpress.org blog that is because the blog owner put them there and they can since they are paying hosting fees. -
That makes sense about Google, rosebud. Good point.
WP are considering allowing adverts in the future, but no info about when.

I don't mean to upset anyone, but wordpress did state the hyperlinking of keywords into their free blogs hosted on their site. The pop-ups were a new thing I've been experiencing in wordpress .org and .com.
Maybe I just don't like the idea of someone else earning money from the things I write, which is why I opt for blogger that allows me to choose to have ads or not on my site and reap its benefits.
Besides, the versatility of editing your layouts in blogger is endless, while wordpress only allows you to play with the CSS if you host your own wordpress blog (this part about the layouts is hearsay, btw, so correct me if I'm wrong).

It is important to note that folks can use any platform for spam and scatter sites. But on a hosted site there is usually a place to report it so that it can be reviewed and shut down. I am sure others have more to say about that.
Regarding spam etc here is a post that some may find interesting.

I really only wanted to get feedback on Wordpress.com and Blogger.com. Wordpress.org, Movable Type and other Self-Hosted platforms is not equal.
I am currently doing training videos for some beginning bloggers on Wordpress.com on a Wordpress.com site www.rosiesblogclass.wordpress.com
But trying to decide if I will also do a series on Blogger.com. Based on this great imput I think I will once I finish the Wordpress series.
PS it is important to note that you cannot embed video from Youtube on Wordpress.com sites. But you can. 1. pay for more space. 2. Use Viddler.com because they give you code just for Wordpress.com, that's really cool and what I use. -
I use both wordpress.com and blogger. Wordpress has a more professional look and feel and if I have an issue the wordpress people are there in a matter of minutes. It is not half as easy to use as blogger though.
Blogger is easy to use, you can place advertisement, you can click and drag on your layout to get things where you want them and you can add whatever you need without any problem. Where it is lacking is support can take weeks to get back to you and by then you've already forgotten what the problem is.-
I can be pretty internet challenged sometimes, but I didn't have problems getting set up on WP. But then again, WP was all I knew, and there are tons of well written tutorials on how to use it. For instance, Timethief's blog, which I discovered way before meeting her on BC. Lorelle's blog is another good source of WP tips.
However, Shiley, you are right about the support over at WP. I'm very impressed on how quick and efficient they are, and that is a big plus in my book.
But there also are things that mildly irritate me over at WP, like the very limited customization options.
There are also many widgets and badges that are not supported.
So it's hard to tell, really. It think they both have their positive and negative aspects.
To be quite honest, after blogging on MySpace for a while, I'd say anything else goes!

Salomey5 is right! You can put videos on a Wordpress.com site from Youtube
1. Post the url
2. Embed but turn off the Visual Editor before you do it on the profile page.
3. Use easy code in Viddler without turning off the visual editor
4. But can only do uploads by paying for more space.
Thanks for correcting me Solomey5
Good thing about blogging is that there is always more than one way.
Note: Wordpress.com does not have nifty plugins like you do on the self-hosted Wordpress.org -
Oh, one other thing that did change in Youtube is the amount of time your video can have which is now only 10 min. That is another reason I have been playing around with sites like Dailymotion and viddler. But that is another discussion
-
one we like for video is mogulus.com

wordpress all the way, if you want to pay for it that is. Better cms by far and better templates/widgets etc.
But if you're cheap like me, stick with blogger. And it doesn't hurt using blogger when it's owned by google neither (search, analytics, adsense) It's nice to access them all with the same account with a few clicks
When wordpress allows me to alter every line of code in my template for free, AND allows me to monetize it with adsense i'm a gonner! -
Wordpress is more flexible and powerful while being less user-friendly. Also, why no ads? Makes no sense to me. I hope that by the time I move to self-hosting, WP will have improved its usability. The dashboard UX is truly lame compared to Blogger (but at the same time has more features). Someone at WP should be studying Blogger's usability.
So, if you're just teaching people to blog who will just be expressing their thoughts or keeping in touch with family, Blogger is best. Present and future pros will want to learn WP for the jump to self-hosting. -
I prefer hosting my own blog built with Wordpress.
Blogger has so many users that it often has server troubles, which leads to problems logging in, etc. Of course, I haven't used it for ages, so maybe it's better now.
I've also found the range and quality of free Wordpress themes available to be better than Blogger. Plus I actually found it easier to create my own theme with WP. -
I have never tried blogger, but have only used wordpress and love it for the freedom to develop and use other tools that people have developed such as the wide variety of plugins. I did try Joomla once- and that site is still undeveloped.

Is it possible to have the same blog on both Wordpress and blogger? If i transfer data from blogger to wordpress, i dont loose the first data? Thanks
-
I have never tried wordpress. I'm a blogger.com guy.
-
I've found that both seem to have some qualities that are beneficial, others that are not-so-much...
But, I prefer Blogger, possibly because that is what I started experimenting with. And now, well, let's just say I know where my bread is buttered.
Incidentally, these server problems I hear about (not just in this thread or on blogcatalog in general) have not occurred for me. -

I have a self-hosted Wordpress software blog. I started with Blogger, went to a free wordpress.com blog and then decided to self-host so I have more versatility. It wasn't that expensive and it was worth it.
I don't put any ads on my blog. -
I tried both. I like Wordpress as it could be easy installed on my own server and it much more customizable. I do appriciate the ease of blogger.
see my wordpress site: printedproof.com -
I prefer Blogger.com over Free wordpress.com. But once ungraded Wordpress is super powerful. Likeitwinit.com was build on wordpress software. Been pretty cool.
-
If you are looking to make money online it does not matter if you use blogger or self hosted wp. I have both and make money with both using adsense.
In all honesty the WP blog is a pain in the butt. If they come up with any more upgrades or new versions I'm gonna throw the computer.
Most people think that they need to make their blog look "just right" for it to be read, liked, and to make money with it. That is why they use WP self hosted. In reality, if you can deal with reality, some of the most popular blogs on the internet that make the most money are blogger blogs.
Blogger blogs don't need to be updated, people are more than happy to read them, and best of all.....they are free. -
I like wordpress.com. It has cool themes and is user friendly. Its even better if u have a self hosted wordpress blog.
