Well polybore has always been rather amused by the Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling downhill race. Results in carnage every year. Keeps the ambulances busy.

I know that various aboriginal and indigenous tribes have rituals and coming of age ceremonies that most people find to be either bizarre or even dangerous.

Suspension piercings, cutting rituals, whipping rituals, body modifications etc and so forth.
    1. acousticguitarist
      sounds like high school kids
    2. celticmusicfan
I forgot this indigenous culture where during a wedding ceremony, the priest drinks something and spits that liquid on the faces of those to be wedded, thus the marriage has ended.
    3. Anok
Yeah, only far more serious and important

In Papua New Guinnea (sp?) young boys undergo a coming of age ritual by accomplishing a set of tasks (things like jumping over so many bulls, etc) which is then followed by the scarring of the skin through whipping. the whipping must be done by his sisters, aunts, and other female relatives to show that he is now a man, and preparing for adulthood privileges and obligations. usually at the age of 13.

Other tribes take men into a hut for a specified amount of time for ritual cleansing, meditation, and sacramental offerings. During this time they cut their skin with thousands of tiny cuts along their backs and arms to induce scarring in the pattern of crocodile skin - a sacred animal in the tribe.

Other tribes use suspension as a form of spiritual advancement (done at specific intervals and rites of passage) where they are suspended from the back or nipples with hooks in their skin for hours until they have had a vision.

They think the only way for a boy to become a man is to ingest semen. That's weird by American standards.

The Xhosa people of South Africa have a coming of age ritual for males that includes ritual circumcision:

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xhosa
One traditional ritual that is still regularly practiced is the manhood ritual, a secret rite that marks the transition from boyhood to adulthood (Ulwaluko). After ritual circumcision the initiates (abakwetha) live in isolation for up to several weeks, often in the mountains. During the process of healing they smear white clay on their bodies and observe numerous taboos.

In modern times the practice has caused controversy, with over 300 circumcision- and initiation-related deaths since 1994, and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV via the practice of circumcising initiates with the same blade. In March 2007 a controversial mini-series dealing with Xhosa circumcision and initiation rites debuted on SABC. Titled Umthunzi Wentaba, the series was taken off the air after complaints by traditional leaders that the rites are secret and not to be revealed to non-initiates and women.

This circumcisions do not take place in sterile conditions nor with sharp blades: they are done in dirt floored huts with dirty hands holding sharp pieces of glass or old razor blades. Post-procedure infections are rampant and deaths are reported annually.

all forms of circumcision of either sex is barbaric

Those weird French people eat freaky gross stuff, like smashed up snails. And they like it.

I'm not even really positive there is an actual place called France. I think it's made up, like Atlantis. I mean really, has anyone actually MET anyone from France? Even on line? I rest my case.
    1. trailofpen
Yeah, I've met people from a place called France. They all live in Quebec.
    2. hatingtherain
      I rest my case. Again.
