I got to thinking about my best friend today, simply because she's so friggin awesome. We met on craigslist in Brooklyn. Our first "date" was Drag Queen BINGO in lower Manhattan and we've been friends ever since.

Brag about your best friend!

Oh, BW...I'm so sorry to hear that, sweetie.
    3. blackwater
She was a good friend, and eventually I called her my sister since I don't have one and I was like a brother to her.
    4. melindaville
Wow, Blackwater--that's so awful and I'm sorry to hear it.

My best friend is Alejandra. We met in junior high but it wasn't until late high school that we started hanging out, and ever since then we have been very close. I was her maid of honor a couple of years ago. A lot of times I miss her more than my own family *rolls eyes* now that I live in another city.

Awwww... I know what cha mean. I'm several states away from my bestie AND from my fam. It's tough. Thank goodness for blackberries, IM and email!

My mom. She forgave me for being a big biotch during my teen years and is always there when I need her.
    1. lotusb
Thats awesome. I didn't think of my mother or my sis for that matter. Although I always refer to my sister as my FIRST best friend.

I am my own best friend. My husband is my second best friend, and my sister is in a tie for second place with him. I have a small number of best friends that have been in my life since college and will always be in it. I also have a larger network of friends some whom I have met offline and some whom I have met online.

My family, friends and I have agreed to keep our personal business out of blogs and online communities. As I blog under a psuedonym and also because I would feel uncomfortable about singling any friend out of the group and trumpeting their virtues, lest they be recognized online, I will not be doing that here.

Suffice to say that there are 10 people I am very close to that I can call on at any time and they will always be there for me, just as I will always be there for them. They are all people that I immediately recognized as soul mates in the non-romantic sense upon meeting them. We have been through many ups and down together and we will remain bonded in this life and perhaps in the next ones as well.

      Timethief its ok!
You can tell everyone im your best friend!
    2. lotusb
I'd say I'm a bit of the opposite. My blog is about the details of my (facinating?) life. I'm going to be changing it in a month or so to be acutally even more detailed. I think it's awesome that you consider yourself to be your best friend, a lot of people don't even know how to begin to love themselves that much.
    3. timethief
      @willam2009
Thanks so much for your friendship. I appreciate it a lot.

        @lotusb
IMO we have to unlearn every negative core belief we were inculcated with by authority figures in our childhood, and replace those negative core values with positive ones in order to become our own best friends, and become able love ourselves. Then and only then, are we in a position to learn how to love others fully and make positive contributions to our relationships that last for our lifetime.

I began that process in my 30's. I'm still working on it and will always be, as recovery from abuse is a lifelong process. Change is the only constant in the universe and I'm growing stronger and healthier every day with every change for the better that I make in my life. If you want to know what I mean about changes, replacing negative core beliefs, and initiating personal growth, so you can learn how to love yourself please read my posts.
          What's at your core?

      Awww, but it's delightful. Lol..

I don't have one, currently. I had two or three best friends in high school, but that sort of ended after graduation as we got out of touch.

Now, I've got friends in college, but I'm not particularly close to any of them. Which is good (in my opinion), as I'll be graduating soon.
    1. lotusb
      Congrats on graduating soon...!
    2. Friday13
Yeah, thanks. Let's see if I make it
    3. melindaville
You'll make it Friday--I have faith in you!
    4. Friday13
Yeah, okay. Let's not get sappy here
    5. melindaville
It is Kum By Ya time?

"Kum by Ya, m'lord, Kum by Ya
Kum by Ya, m'lord, Kum by Ya
Kum by Ya, m'lord, Kum by Ya
      Oh lord, Kum by Ya"

      Everyone sing!
    6. blackwater
      oh god no...not that song...
    7. Friday13
That reminds me of that scene from Addams Family Values.
    8. lotusb
      @Friday

      Me too!!! LMAO!
    9. Stillthinking
Yes, some one else who like camp fire songs! Next year, singing around a campfire! Excellent.
    10. melindaville
We could try a different one!

How about Sid Vicious's version of "I did it my way?"
    11. melindaville
@still--bonus! I play a mean guitar! Songs around the campfire--I'll bring my guitar! I'll even bring my Martin!
    12. Stillthinking
Yes! I love to sing! Of course, my song choices tend to run a little less punky than yours.
    13. ThriftShopRomantic
Oh no-- is Melinda trying to make us all go to the Harmony Hut?

I guess as long as we don't have to put on a pageant.
    14. melindaville
Ha ha ha. I was joking about the Vicious song. These days, I mostly play blues and jazz--but I keep my finger in the rock pie just to stay in rock shape! You never know when the wild women might have a reunion.
    15. Stillthinking
I can brush up on some classic American songbook stuff.

"Our Love is Here to Stay" Ella Fitzgerald anyone?
    16. melindaville
I LOVE me some Ella! So great. I've been playing around with some old Billie Holiday tunes lately. When we were up in Maine, I did an interesting arrangement of 'God Bless the Child.' It sounded pretty good--although my guitar playing is a little rusty (my callouses are still rebuilding--I didn't play my guitar much the last few months).
    17. Stillthinking
I have more of a folk pop voice than a jazz voice, but I still love to try every now and then.
    18. melindaville
We'll have some fun with it. I'm looking forward to this camping trip. I will bring my gee-tar.

    1. lotusb
I wish I could lie on myself...that would be so weird.
    2. greencurmudgeon
      Interesting misinterpretation, but never mind.
  9. ThriftShopRomantic
I have two friends I'd consider my closest friends, and then some other terrific folks from a variety of places.

One of my best friends I've known since first grade. The other, I met in college.

I'm lucky that the two of them get along really well, too.
    1. lotusb
      Ohh, thats a rarity...
  10. nothingprofound
I'm with TT on this one. I can't imagine enjoying anyone's company as much as I do my own. I never give myself any grief. I'm always happy.
  11. cathy13
    Definitely this guy!
    1. lotusb
Awwww....I knew you'd say that too...you and your hubby. So cute.
  12. IntoTheAzureSea
I am my own best friend by steering myself away from trouble, unnecessary conflict, potential enemies and screaming to myself to go to church every sunday.
