What ya think? I'm a pretty good cook, if I have to say so myself.

My husband can grill anything to perfection. I can't. I can, however, make something great out of nothing in our kitchen. So I'd have to say we both have our "areas of expertise".

for me I always try to get a guy that can cook cause I sure the hell dont know how to cook. Honest I have seen in person more guys that can cook better then women. So from my experience I'd say guys can cook better

it depends. I cook, a lot. I love to bake and my soups are requested often but one of my friends is head chef at his restaurant and a far better cook than I can ever hope to be. I wouldn't mind a man who can find his way around a crockpot but if it's football season...on Sunday's the kitchen is all mine!

I think it's fairly common for men who do cook to be good cooks.
Those that don't like doing it, tend to live off of takeout and microwave meals when single. And tend to rely on their partner when in a relationship.
Those that do cook, often do so because they like doing it, and we tend to become good at what we like doing.
I think its more common that women learn to cook because of need or the difference in gender upbringing. Those that like doing it are every bit as good as men, but you'll find more women than men who just simply do it because they have to or get fed that role in a relationship. -

I can't address the cooking skills or lack thereof of every man and woman on earth. I can say that overall my husband is both a better cook and a better baker than I am. It's a weird phenomena but we can both use the same pastry recipe and his turns out wonderful and flaky and mine turns turns out like cardboard. I excel at making salads, soups, stews, vegetable dishes and crockpot meals.

Statistically, more male chefs at restaurants and more female chefs at homes. But I think male are highly favored.

Slightly off track comment - there is a theory to that.
In restaurant kitchens, the staff works like a well oiled machine, each chef has their area, their duties, and work together. In a home the "chef" must do everything to prep and cook the meal.
One difference in genders (though not for everyone) is that women are multitaskers and prefer working alone, while men are not multitaskers and prefer working in teams.
If you notice, in fine restaurants where the service is broken up into several servers performing one task each (water boy, buser, waiter, cocktail server, runner, etc..) the servers are almost always all men.
In restaurants where the server must perform all or most of the service tasks they are almost all women.
Same thing with bartenders. (I have only worked with a few male bartenders who were even worth bothering with - much less any who were beyond excellent unless they were gay - seriously).
So in the compartmentalized kitchen, the assembly line set up is better suited for men. Because when the women get in there, they actually end up having more problems than not - unless the kitchen is very small, and you have only one - three chefs. But at home, this problem doesn't exist.
