One of my first audible memories while growing up in the sixties was the song "Hideaway" by John Mayall and The Blues Breakers. The guitar player was of course Eric Clapton. To this day, he is still one of my all time favorites. How about you? If you had to pick only one from any genre, who would that be? This discussion might be a tough one! Let's give it a try!

I like his slide in Layla
    2. MadMadMargo
Or, how 'bout his slide on "Livin' on the Open Road"? (Delaney & Bonnie)
    3. satijournal
My favorite, also. His solo on Stormy Monday still gives me goosebumps.

Excellent player!!! Duane Allman was rated number 2 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

took the words right out of my mouth...a guitaring genius.

For me it's Eddie Van Halen, if I had to choose one. One of the main reasons why I started playing.
  9. TheBluesBlogger
Eddie Van Halen was number 70 on Rolling Stone top 100. Although many will disagree with that ranking... Eddie has many influences such as Brian May, Ronnie Montrose, Allan Holdsworth and of course Eric Clapton.

Great memories. Miller still sounds cool.

Glad you liked the article MadMadMargo... We can touch base via email regarding stories.

LGramlich---Liona Boyd is really amazing. Ever heard her work with Clapton? Wild stuff... Different side to her there.
    1. LGramlich
BluesBlogger; No, I hadn't heard her stuff w/Clapton. I bet that's awesome, too. I'll have to see if I can't find some floating around. Thanks for the tip!

Although, I've already posted Duane Allman, there's a player I've been following for the past 5 years or so that deserves a mention - Joe Bonamassa.

    Julian Bream (sorry)

No need to be sorry... You can mention guitar players from all genres... For those unfamiliar here is a link.

      That's just wonderful - I hadn't seen that footage - thank-you.
    3. witewood
Hey don't be sorry We classical players/enthusiasts have a wide reportoire to follow. I uploaded a very rare Bream concert recently to a site of mine, when he was in his prime, around 1977. I saw him "live" in '99, towards the end of his career. There were increasing technical flaws by then, but he still had that aura about him, real charisma about the man and his playing.
    4. acousticguitarist
I'm with Mark... I like Bream very much. I have 3 versions of Bachs Lute suites and I like Breams the best.

    Kirk Hammett,hands down
  21. ophase
I like Stu Ham, Flea, Kirk Hammet, Satriani, ..etc.
But sometimes i am observing that they play quite mechanically like robots.

I think the queen guitarist "Brian May" is the most emotional guitar virtuoso of all time.
    1. TheBluesBlogger
ophase--- Brian May is a great guitarist! He always had a fantastic tone to match his emotion. I come from a recording studio background, and although I've seen many guitarists try, none have come close to getting that Brian May sound... Very cool choice!

      Thanks

Strange you and I have not had a mention as their favourite player Tony, even allowing for my recordings not being too easy to find on my site (wonder why)

      Still, art for arts sake...
    2. acousticguitarist
Mark, I don't have to be anyone elses fave, but what is important is the emotional experience that I have when I play. It is much more powerful because of the chemicals that are released.

      Tony

I just found a blog today called ‘Great anonymous albums’ with an article of the rockband Camel.

Their guitar player, Andrew Latimer, is my favorite.

On the blog is a Youtube video with parts of Camel’s most famous album ‘The Snow Goose’.

    1. TheBluesBlogger
Anthe- Thanks for joining the discussion. Now that is a band I really haven't thought about in a long long time... Thanks for the flashback.
    2. Anthe
Yes, it had been a while for me too. How great are internet and Youtube!
    3. Anthe
Today I found an amazing Camel recording of Lady Fantasy on Youtube. It is a very old one, 1976, but it is so wonderful to see Latimer play, going through constanly changing moods with his guitar.

It is in 3 parts and I uploaded them to my Gaia blog.

I came to this discussion because I've recently became enamored with the guitar. I LOVE it. I remeber my brothers getting together to play the guitar and I would sit there and listen. I have yet to have a favorite guitar artist, but hopefully I will have a little list started soon. Reading some of your comments, I'm definitely going to check out some of these guitars players. The sounds of guitars that I'm familiar with and use to listening are the contemporary acoustics of GooGoo Dolls and many other on the radio. I'm looking forward to expanding my knowledge of guitar players I've haven't heard of. =)

I have not noticed a mention for Django Reinhardt, the legendary jazz guitarist, surely this must be an oversight! The guy only had proper use of two left hand fingers as well, perhaps this is where I've gone wrong! Boy what a player though.

I think I'll do a blog post about him, I feel suitably inspired
    1. TheBluesBlogger
witewood- Was hoping somebody would take us on the shift towards jazz... What a perfect place to begin with Django...I also like Wes Montgomery and of course later down the past and present road in time ... John Mclaughlin.

Any jazz guitar fans out there who would like to add their favorites?
    2. acousticguitarist
I used to work as jazz player

Pat Martino - Best at chromatic Lines

Jim Hall - Best Melody player

Ed Bickert - Favourite Chord Player

      Pat Metheny - Best sound

      Mick Goodrick - Most interesting

      Wes Montgomery - God

      Ike Isaacs - Most underrated

      Ralph Towner - Best Improviser

Martin Taylor - Currently the Worlds Best

Joe Pass - Best solo arrangements

Really enjoyed Santana's album Moonflower... Of course I'm going back over 30 years now.
  33. mizztinez
Jimi Hendrix most definitely i love him to death (uhh...no pun intended). I even named my puppy Hendrix in his honor.
    1. TheBluesBlogger
Sounds like you got a cool puppy there!

Hendrix has been an influence to so many guitar players. Many of which are already mentioned in this discussion. No list of favorite guitar players will ever be complete without mentioning Jimi Hendrix...
  34. tps
Wow, what a tough question... but an awesome discussion!
Man, for me, nobody's technically better than Clapton. Staying in one genre is hard. I know it was suppose to be only one, but I gotta mention a few others: Gilmour plays sweeter than anyone I've ever heard. Jimi was a maniac and could do anything with an axe. Don Felder is awesome! Randy Rhoads was brilliant and Zack Wylde is just as good. There's Leslie West, Bo diddley, BB King, Chuck Berry, George Harrison, Angus and Malcolm.

And even some of today's players are awesome, like Keith Urban. Man, he's underrated, can play anything and sounds amazing! Slash is a monster, as we all know.

But if I had to pick, it would be a draw: Clapton... and Tony Iommi. Tony was a riff machine 30 years ago and is just as good today. He's like Gilmour, when you heard him play, you knew exactly who it was. Sorry about not sticking to the rules
    1. TheBluesBlogger
tps- Yes it is tough to only pick one. Great choice of versatile players! Thanks for joining the discussion.
    2. acousticguitarist
      Leslie West - oh yeah
  35. Financialnut
Dude that plays bass for the Goo Goo Dolls!
  36. retrokimmer
My favorite guitar player of all time is DICK DALE and the DELTONES pipeline and King of the Surf Guitar. I have his bio and video on my blog go check him out!
    1. MadMadMargo
Dick Dale can be heard on "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack. His sound, I think, is haunting. Great choice!
    2. satijournal
He's definitely one of the all time greats. I saw him play a few years ago. He played a left-handed guitar strung like a right-handed guitar. Must have been some open tuning.
  37. KBB
    This is historic!!!

This has to be the first discussion about who is your favorite guitar player and no one has mention Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I can throw in Jimi Hendrix, Claptopn, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, Steve Cropper, and Brian May from Queen, and Prince (I have to admit it) among others.

SRV. The Best. End of discussion for me.
    1. TheBluesBlogger
Several of the guitar players on your list have already been mentioned, with the exception of Prince and Steve Cropper... You're right!!! SRV represents a major gap in the discussion. On the other hand, I always knew he would be mentioned eventually... Thanks!!!
    2. acousticguitarist
there's been lots of discussions here on guitar players, SRV always gets mentioned just behind hendrix and clapton in the stats
