I thought I'd open up a discussion to see why women (and men) decide to enter network marketing. I think it will be a lively discussion and interesting to hear everyone's perspective. Here's mine:
I have chosen to develop my Rodan + Fields Dermatologists independent skincare consultancy because of the worldwide reputation of the doctors and the successful track record of the products they have created. Their first "baby" was Proactiv, which has changed the lives on many millions of people worldwide. Now the doctors are doing it again, launching a comprehensive skincare brand, Rodan + Fields, and this time they are sharing the business opportunity with everyone. It was a proven leading prestige skincare line in the finest department stores and the first retail skincare brand to leave the beauty counters to enter the direct selling arena. In any direct selling company, it is widely known that the "early bird gets the worm". Those who invest time and talent to join a network marketing organization at its beginning will have a brilliant opportunity ahead of them to create a bright future for themselves, their families, and for others they mentor. I enjoy the challenge of business development and wanted to be one of those "pioneers", so that's why I launched my business. I love the products and sharing the gift of beautiful skin with others. I also have had the privilege of knowing one of the doctors since childhood, and I can personally attest to her integrity and sincere dedication to helping others. That's the most important thing of all, as far as I'm concerned.
Best Regards,
Victoria

I've been a sucker a few times in pyramid schemes. It only pays if you start at the top with your own business.

There are some really lousy scams out there and people should do due diligence to avoid wasting time, energy and money. The good news is that there are some excellent network marketing companies which have moved from brick and mortar stores to allow an independent sales force to represent their products. This is a great way to share the wealth, if you think about it. The key is to research associations like the Direct Selling Association www.dsa.org for their membership. The other thing is to consider companies where the network marketing business model does not supercede the product. For instance, sometimes MLM business models are established, then they go out and find a product to rep. It's better to find a company who's product was successful and had a track record before it moved into an mlm sales channel. That makes a big difference.

I used to work for Kinko's in the middle of the night. One of my cash customers was a multi-level marketing guy who printed post cards and booklets to recruit distributors in various "opportunities" that he joined.
He made a little money in about 1 of 5 companies he was in. After years of persistence, he "got lucky" as he put it, and recuited two heavy hitters into Tahitian Noni - one bringing the product to Korea, the other recuiting 200 other distributors.
He bought houses and rental property and no longer needs to rely on his $7,000 a month Noni checks.
Unfortunately, a very small percentage of distributors in any company will ever make that kind of money. He told me "For every 20 distributors you sign up in anything, you're lucky if they recuit someone else and one in 100 might do really well." -
Here are the facts...
Most people who start a business, a regular brick and mortar business don't succeed or have the success they thought they would have.
The same can be said for network marketing. It's a business model. Just because you can work it from home doesn't make it any less of a business.
It takes hard work, just like any business would. The unfortunate thing is that it's marketed to or aimed at people who don't have the business skills or know-how to make it work...thus the reason so many people fail at it. Actually these same people would fail at any business.
I like network marketing because it levels the playing field for anyone to have great success as long as they're able to build their skills and put forth consistent action.
Good topic Victoria!
