I think it also depends on what they are trying to do with their blog. For my blog, I'm trying to create a resource with lots of information for photographers. I tell my own story also, but there are so many aspects of photography that I don't have any experience in - and guest posts help me provide more information to my readers.
Lazy could have something to do with it also - LOL. Although I wouldn't call myself lazy, sometimes my day job simply overwhelms me and I can't rub two brain cells together to write a post. :-) -
I went over this a while ago. Asking the public for "guest bloggers" is just something people do when they run out of ideas. And no, it never helps.
The legit way to do it is by making friends and then asking them, if the two of you can find a subject you strongly agree on. I had one person write on my blog, and she was the only one i asked. -
Ofcourse one of the most common reasons is increasing audience and readers for both the blog owner and the guest.
There are other reasons as well like when a blogger takes a holiday or on a more serious note, is fighting illness that when guest posters are valuable to keep their blog clicking.
In event of the blogger's death, a guest poster who has access to the blog could be first to announce their demise. -
Guest posting allows for a wider view on subject and can ad freshness to a blog that is going stale. I am considering inviting a feminist male to guest blog at www.womanist-musings.com/ just to shake things up a bit.

I'd say guest posting has many advantages.. and disadvantages.
Advantages
- Other people who look at things from a different angle might have something to say that you havent thought of.
- Expert guest posters of course have more knowledge.
- Guest posters give you more content (could also be a disadvantage if what they are writing is BS)
- Guest posters provides blog updates which is something search engines favours and gives better ranking to.
- Being a guest poster gives you an opportunity to give backlinks to your own site.
- A lazy blogger can have an updated blog with expert content
Disadvantages
- Guest posters might fill your blog with crappy or spammy content
- Writing posts on other blogs takes time, time you could have spent on something more useful
- Your posts might be edited (you dont want to spend time on something just to see it being changed)
- Your back-links to your own site might be removed
Please add more pros and cons to the above list if you can think of any. - Other people who look at things from a different angle might have something to say that you havent thought of.

Well, because my site is new and I want to get more exposure for myself...and meet other bloggers, I've recently asked people if they'd be interested in guest blogging. It's a great way for them to be exposed to a new audience and to have a little variety on my site. I don't run out of things to write about but it's always great to have different voices on the page, which is one of the focuses on my site in general.

To swap traffic, add variety and what gosmelltheflowers said.
Also you can use guest posts for hiatus.

I have others write for my blog because I've found that many of my readers like reading other people's stories, and they like sharing their own stories. I usually get a big bump in traffic when I have a new story to share. Obviously, it depends on the topic and what the guest posts are about - people come to my blog when they're facing a specific situation and are feeling very alone, I think it makes them feel much better to know that other people are going through similar things.

I disagree that we are lazy and that it doesn't help. I have guest authors frequently. Some ask me and I offer for others. But posts to have to be relevant to the blog itself.

So where can I find a directory of bloggers that are willing to do guest posting? I'd prefer a directory with categories of expertise and full background description of the blogger
Are there even directories like this out there?
If not, let me start one:

@PetLvr
dude im new to it..and i saw people doing it..never mind,...will keep a note.!!
thanx for informing me..!!! -
Guest posting is usually initiated by the blog author in order to supplement the blog with content when he or she is away or in absentia for one reason or another. It is a good way to develop a community spirit as a blog and it shows that you care to share the link-love and publicity around. I highly recommend it.

wow this gets posted the same day I ask someone to guest post on my blog. How ironic but the reason I asked someone to guest post is because shes a awesome writer at relationships and such and my website is expanding its not a personal blog. I'm looking for someone with knowledge in fashion by the way!

for better ideas i guess, more comprehensive content and more traffic. two or several minds works better than one, y'know.
before, i thought this might be a good idea but i personally don't want other people messing up with my stuff. i maybe not that good a blogger but still i'm not up for that. i want to increase traffic in my own and personal prowess. Lame huh? ^6^ -

Even though I'm an expert in classical music, having done some work towards my Ph.D. and having spent over twenty years in my field, I always welcome guest bloggers. The fact is, 1) with a busy performing and teaching schedule I can commit to posting only twice a week; 2) classical music is not only for experts but for everyone, so I welcome posts on it not only from experts but from ordinary people's experiences, whether it be a concert or CD review, an opinion piece, a story about how classical music has helped them, a performing experience, etc.; 3) I welcome other but related points of view (that is, I'll take someone else's view of a CD or performance, but I don't take posts saying "U R just a hater becuz metal RULEZZZ!!"); 4) I don't play every instrument there is and so people who play other instruments are especially welcome; 5) my site is a bliki rather than a blog, so even older posts are continually updated, wiki-style, and crosslinked with earlier and later posts and comments.
At least that is all the reasons I can think of today
