I cannot believe how many stupid people/spammers there are out there that leave unrelated comments on posts trying to do external links to their crappy blogs/sites. If they are going to be that low down at least make the comment related to the post or just ask to do a linkback right? You know how many comments we get that say "Hey what a cute puppy" and the post is a pig. Lol Do they honestly think we will all miss that and let it go? Or are they honestly that stupid? So much easier to just ask nicely or be a part of the blog for a while before posting their URL. So my question is, do you all deal with this same stupidity and misbehavior?
Also what are your own stories of these fly by night posts? Anyone else get a dozen or more identical posts from the same user on the same comment, like we would somehow miss it? Lol

Best of luck on your blogs and God Bless.

Askimet takes care of that for me.

Well, some of those "What a cute puppy" things happens because spammers search for blogs on a particular topic to post inane comments for linkbacks...

And then don't take the time to see if the pic actually matches their pre-written, copy and paste, blanket comment.

I had a guy spamming me repeatedly regarding cell phones recently like that.

I also once had a guy try to get a linkback but referred to me as a man.

Note: I may not be Katherine Zeta-Jones, but I'm not often mistaken for Tommy Lee Jones, either. And my pic is on my web site.
    1. mycutepetpics
Like I said retarded! Anyone confuses you for a dude needs to get their head examined.
Why don't they just try and write good content and the external links will just come. lol
What do they really hope to gain? I know of some blogs that have over 1,000+ external links and the blogger still doesn't have one advertiser. Maybe they get one or 2 extra visits a day, when a visitor accidentally clicks on their name/link?
Or is it to be Google indexed higher?

Either or it just doesn't seem to be worth all the effort. They should use that time and learn how to write decent content or make a blog that doesn't have 100 images and take 10 mins to load. Lol

On another note, what is Askimet?
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
It's all about being lazy and wanting instant traffic/advertising clicks. Smart content doesn't really enter into it. In many cases, they lift that, too.

On one of my recent posts- sorryalltheclevernamesaretaken.blogspot.com/2008/08/jewel-of-medina.html - someone calling herself "Sara" left a comment with link. Her comment was relevant to the post but it was really just an attempt to spam for a commercial website.
After going to several blogs dealing with the same subject as mine, I discovered that "Sara" had pasted the same comment on quite a few.
    1. mycutepetpics
Good searching to find that one rtsimms. maybe we should just turn off users being able to leave url's. These spammers are sneaky aren't they? Can we even block them having the capability to leave their url when posting? What's the point of it if we can just do a linkback section to other blogs we really want to link with ? I am sorry to ask but very new to blogging.
  4. Kiwipulse
ya use askimet, I caught over 10 000 spam comments since I started blogging.
    1. mycutepetpics
I will look into Askimet Kiwipulse. Thank you for the information and God Bless.

The last one we got was someone thinking they were being really discreet. It made me laugh so I left it on there. It was on a post with a quote from Dwight on The Office. Here's a copy and paste of the SPAMMY comment: ''The Office is amazing and Dwight is the MAN. I just ordered a sweet Dwight Schrute for President shirt from www.PantherTees.com. They have tons of stuff from The Office. They said not to tell anyone, but here is a 10% discount code, pts10 (it is case sensitive, so copy and paste it). Enjoy!''

Now, at least he referred to the post and his SPAM was relevant SPAM but...yeah, he's slipping me a secret 10% discount, lol. Right. Top Secret bidness. Needless to say, I didn't enjoy a Dwight shirt but I kept it on there for laughs. A pathetic attempt but I'm thankful for the comments. We get so few. I clicked on his profile but it told me it wasn't viewable. Shocker.

    1. mycutepetpics
Lol that would of made me laugh as well. Can you just delete the Url and leave the comment Hoeno? I just researched it with Typepad and i deleted all the spam Url's and kepth the post related comments. Will that work? Or are their Url's still hidden somewhere in there?
    2. Hoeno
I'm not sure, really. I have a friend with a blog where someone left their name with a url to a foreign language porn site and they deleted the comment which just said ''good job'' or something and the stupid porn URL and name just stayed there without the harmless comment. They can't get rid of it, lol.

*** What is a particulars? lol
    1. mycutepetpics
Lmao!!!! I have no idea... Do you notice that 80% or so of these spam comments we don't know what they are talking about. It's almost like those e-mail scams about I got 5 million dollars and need your help recovering it for a fee!! lol
  7. polybore
Careful how you use the word "retard" you might get demonstrators.
    1. mycutepetpics
Will do. thx for the tip. I didn't even think that was even related to the mentally challenged anymore, especially after they implemented the political correct words. Sorry if I offended anyone but wasn't meant like that in anyway.
  8. mycutepetpics
been 40 hrs going for another round of toss and turns trying to nap. See you all in a bit and God Bless.
  9. Randomreflection
I keep getting repeated comments from an "online lottery," "lottery tickets," "online gambling," etc. with silly comments like, "This great blog" just so people will go to their site and make the mistake of clicking on some stuff. I let Blogger hold comments until I am able to look at them and say Publish or Reject. One thing - you know some people are being paid pennies to click on stuff online, open meaningless emails, etc. I wonder if people are going through blogs by the thousands leaving these little comments/links for $ for companies? I'm new too but thought that might be a possibility.
  10. mycutepetpics
hmmm that is definitely a good possibility. It's kinda like the companies from old that used to pay people here to run around town and either put company logo stickers & posters anywhere they can. Even though we all hate it I would finally understand Bloggers motive and the companies that hire them should be held liable for soliciting. It's illegal on the phone the same should go for the computer I think. I will look into this more. Thanks for the great idea. I read on a few sites that 9 out of 10 genuine visitors on your site like seeing their comments published immediately so they feel like they are part of the site and contributing. There has to be a way to block Url's I would hope. I will research that too after I wake from the nap I am about to take. I will let you know what I find out.
  11. Arikbo
If it really doesn't make any sense it's more likely to be a spam bot that is loading crappy links onto a comment form. Do you require they use image verification before guests are able to comment? Not fool proof but it does help that at least you know the comments were put there by a human.
    1. mycutepetpics
Yes we do and a few still slide through here and there.
  12. marketingoasis
Personally, I use the "Math Comment Spam" protection plugin and it works really well. Visitors have to correctly answer a simple math question on the comment form, otherwise they can't leave a comment. It stops all of the software tools that mass spam comments on thousands of blogs.
    1. Arikbo
Even better! So is this like 1 + 1, or really difficult equations so you keep the real idiots out?
    2. mycutepetpics
Great application! Did you install that or was that part of your blog software?
    3. marketingoasis
I installed the Math Comment plugin myself, its actually very easy to do. All you have to do is copy and paste the code into the correct area of the comments.php file.

      Just read the instructions here:

      sw-guide.de/wordpress/plugins/math-comment-spam-protection/
  13. marketingoasis
Its not as easy as 1 + 1 but almost as easy. So it would be 8 + 9 or something like that. Its just another way to make sure that only humans are commenting. I have been using it for a while now and I'm very happy with it.

    Download it here:

    wordpress.org/extend/plugins/math-comment-spam-protection/
    1. mycutepetpics
Thank you so much and I will check it out now. Thank you so much and God Bless?
  14. mycutepetpics
So I found a way in TypePad to remove the url and leave the comment. Is that good enough or does their url still hide somewhere in the blog?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much. Best of luck on your blogging and God Bless.
    Josy & Darrin
  15. mycutepetpics
Thank you very much marketingoasis. i will use it in the new site we are building and as soon as we get out of Typepad since we can't change the code at this time. Have a wonderful day and God Bless.

  16. BlogBadly
Because their entire process is automated and once in a blue moon a comment actually gets approved.

Since the spammers do this in bulk (I'd say in the tens of thousands, at least), they do get some backlinks - its a really ineffective tactic, though.
    1. mycutepetpics
Makes no sense and as you said it is an ineffective tactic. They will only get accidental visitors that won't want to be on their page and 99.9% of them will close the page before it even loads. But they strive on praying for that extra penny or visit. lol
    2. BlogBadly
If it were entirely ineffective they'd stop doing it. It's just another trick up their blackhat sleeve.

Remember - they can also get backlinks from this.
  17. jjwright85
Like the one I got today, "I really love trance music, keep it up!" I have never once listened, nor written about trance music...
  18. mycutepetpics
Lol I got one of those too yesterday but mine said i love your games they are awesome! That's funny because my blog is about pet pictures. Lol

very True BlogBadly. But besides being possibly indexed just a wee bit higher is there any other advantage of doing these spam backlinks?
    1. BlogBadly
If you get multiple comments on numerous posts that are completely random, do you click on the link of the author? Because some people do. That's the traffic part of it.

Also, Google PR is affected by dofollow backlinks and its an easy way to build them because it's automated. Even if only .1% of the spam is approved, that can be 100+ comments depending on the spammer.
  19. mycutepetpics
I clicked on one my first time i received one but then realized what it was and have been deleting their Url's as soon as they post. If it's a great comment then i will leave the comment and just erase the Url.

I am sorry but I am new to blogging BlogBadly so can you go into depth just a little what your second paragraph is about. Dofollow backilinks I imagine is what we are talking about but what is Google PR and how is it affected? Public relations? Bad or Good?

Wow and the numbers are crazy if and when they get approved. Thanks for all the info thus far. If I don't reply right away it just means i passed out. Lol be up shortly though. Hopefully
    1. ModelElaine
If you are using blogger or wordpress, they are no follow
  20. ModelElaine
LOL I agree. I don't mind when people post meaningful comments adding value to the post, but when someone says "Nice blog", WTF? "Happy Blogging" is probably the one that should receive a stupidity award
    1. mycutepetpics
I have gotten those and they definitely deserve the stupidity award. Lol
if they just added a few meaningful words they would get away with a lot more. Guess they aren't the brightest bunch.
  21. gingerbeer25
Did it occur to you that using the R word that way is completely inappropriate?
    1. mycutepetpics
To each his own but to me personally growing up & living with several physically & mentally challenged individuals and it has never been an issue and nobody I have ever know has minded using the word or minded it being said. We do not say it or mean it in the way you are implying it was said. I am sorry I wrote it but cannot change now because of bc. I would only change it because it is a great conversation we all have to deal with day to day and it's important for us and we don't need the interruptions. Take care and God Bless

Got a comment in today from a "Mrs. Laughing Pants." Short, but to the point, benign. I put it up. Have never seen a "Mrs. Laughing Pants" around here. (This moniker tickles me no end.)

    Anybody familiar?
  23. timethief
I'm laughing (not at you but with you). Check out this forum and note how many posts of the same "no substance just a link drop thread" ilk that you describe are made to it each and every day.

You have said: "Do they honestly think we will all miss that and let it go?"

My reply is: Yes. There are not only commentators on our blogs that expect this but there are also BC members, who likewise expect us to be silent when it comes to the link drop posts that are made to this forum. Some are such f@#$% wits that they even send threatening hate email comments to us when we do not look the other way.

Suffice to say that I have a comment policy (scroll down to About Commenting) and when I get a link dropper I break their username to blog link and delete any other links they drop into their "comment". onecoolsite.wordpress.com/about/
    1. mycutepetpics
Timethief that is a great comment policy you have.

I have noticed also the more I use bc and other chats the more spam I get. Networking and just chatting for fun these days has some consequences. Lol

I might have to make a comment guidelines about page like you have one day. Great job on that!
  24. Anok
I honestly don't get many spammers at all. I've had a few - one in a totally different language...but I think I scare them, or something

I did have one spam the same post twice, I thought that was funny
    1. mycutepetpics
      Could be the mask! Lol
yea I had one earlier that left 6 exact comments on the same post. It was actually a great comment but didn't wanna leave him any openings so I deleted it and e-mailed him a nice friendly don't ever do it again please! Lol
  25. kat822
Did you consider that some might be offended that you used the word retarded in your post title? I work with the cognigtively impaired for a living and that word is insulting to them and well honestly I could see their point....
    1. mycutepetpics
I apologize that anyone is offended of what I said but when did we stop having the right of freedom of speech.
I am not talking about or have ever referred to a mentally challenged or handicapped individual!
I am talking about spammers! As I clearly referred to in the title and description. If you are above all of us and don't deal with them then you are the one exception in the millions of us bloggers and I praise you.
I am very grateful you work with cognigtively impaired and praise you for that but I grew up in a group home with over a hundred of the mentally impaired and it was never an issue and it has always been used in good humor and as regular speech. If this world has somehow come to the point where we are forced by the media to take every word of context and have to always watch what we say, then I have pity on us. Because we are just loosing the basic rights of living free everyday. Words are just words and unless you are saying them directly to someone or to a group of individual's then by all means please state what's on your mind without holding back.
If we have to live in a world where we cannot speak freely then pity on us!
Again I apologize if you or anyone else that comes on this post is offended. God Bless you all and take care.
    2. kat822
You totally misunderstand my point .....I simply asked a question if you considered it. Not sure that you know much about me, but I am completely for freedom of speech...and am the first to defend anyones right to, and the fact that I asked you that question proves my point.
And Just because I don't get spam doesn't mean I think I am above anyone. Anyway sorry if it hit a nerve but like you said, I have freedom of speech and well I spoke my mind.
    3. mycutepetpics
You hit no nerve, it's just annoying when someone can't take the time to read all the posts and the previous apologies if that offended anyone and that I couldn't edit it as you know after 5 mins when it was posted. So instead of trying to go into a discussion to try and ruin it because yof your own reasons or boredom just next time read all the post and realize that it had already been issued. Hopefully that will be enough for you next time. I mean if a roach had been stepped on already would you go step on it again and again for kicks? We were having a great discussion and figuring out all the different ways we can deal with stopping the spam but I guess since you don't get any you decided to come in and just try and ruin it it seems.
And No you didn't just ask your question simply Kat. You asked your question and added your own lil life story and how offended the cognigtively impaired you work with would be and that you see their point. You are welcome to your freedom of speech by all means please express it. But don't lie and state you asked a simple question when in fact you asked it along with a statement about where you work and how offended the handicapped people you work with would be and that you see why. That's quite a bit more then the simple question you made it out to be.
Next time you should please read all the posts and see that I had already apologized to anybody if they were offended at all about it instead of coming in here and trying to accuse someone how wrong it was to the people you work with and yourself. In my opinion and many it's honestly people like yourself that make the word hurt the handicapped more then it should. Maybe you should try teaching them it's just a word and can be used in many different ways then just talking about them. This way they aren't going to be as upset as you state they are in the many times in their lives they are going to hear it. I am myself handicapped and take no offense to any media made up derogatory terms I hear day to day and have never met anyone else in my life who does. Maybe it's different where you are from and I am sorry about that but you and your staff can help change that. Instead of supporting that it's wrong teach them it's no big deal and truly believe that and you will see a huge difference. You will benefit them in the long run. Best of luck and God Bless

Yep it's a horrible thing whats happening in the Olympics and by the way what a cute little pig avatar.
  27. mycutepetpics
Thank you so much she's our lil nonster.
  28. roentarre
As long as the comments are friendly, I think it is better than no comments!
  29. mycutepetpics
    Very true and great point.

I did read somewhere that to many external links from your site pointing to low ranked sites and especially porno sites is frowned upon by Google and advertisers.

    Any truth to that?
  30. mclintst
I get quite a few bloggers that leave comments very loosely related to the post. Most have broken english and a ton of spelling mistakes.

Also I don't know if they think I don't know what they are trying to do or if it is just a case of them thinking that every comment will get posted.
  31. cashmere
I have many spams and I blocked them all out..
They are sickening... Who would do such things?
  32. bringbackpluto
I thought I was the only one!

Here's How I try To Connect with people:
I request to be a friend. If someone accepts my request, I read their BLOG(because I'm interested) and try to leave a meaningful comment. (Sometimes, but not often, I read someone's BLOG and leave a nice comment and they still don't accept me as a friend. That's always a bit bizarre.)

If someone requests to be my friend, I always accept, UNLESS they leave me the type of comment you describe with the request.

    Like:
"I like your BLOG. Please follow mine, etc."

It's like one of those friends who say, "Hey, how was your day?" And before you even open your mouth they say, "Well my day's been.....

There's a way to promote our BLOGs and still be supportive of one another. We're a lot stronger together than we are by ourselves!
  33. Fundy23
I had a guy put in a comment with a link to his site and a quote from that site. Oddly enough, the quote was from my post! I go to the site and it says something like "Emma wrote an interesting post today..."and it goes on to show everything I had written. Then at the end it says "For more great posts like this, go to 'here'" with here being the link to my site. That's fine, send people to my site but one question. Who the hell is Emma? lol
You're right though, the spammers are getting more and more ridiculous. I mean, do these idiots not realize how dumb it looks? I guess the short answer is no, because otherwise they wouldn't be doing it right?
  34. kat822
I encourage retarded comments, takes one to teach one lol
