Why do Girls change their name when they go to college?

I have noticed recently on my facebook account that friends I am finding are using different names then they used when growing up. It appears they are changing their names or using their middle names when they go off to college. So what the heck is that all about? Are they trying to reinvent themselves, feel their name is childish, or simply pickup a nickname. As a woman who went to college about 10 years after high school I didn't even think such a thing.

Any body have some answers here? Just wondering about it today

  Yeah I suppose, it just seemed a little odd to me. Now on facebook they have people calling them by 2 different names. It's not like they have dumb names or anything. Oh well, just made me think about it that's all and I thought someone who has done it might have an explanation.
