I use Picasso, other use cartoon characters, men are hiding behind beautiful pictures of woman to attract viewers. Is there a deeper meaning to this dilemma?

I had my real name and picture on my blog until I started seeing that people were finding me via google after searching my name and city...that was too weird for me so I took them off.

I'm not a man. That's all I've got to say. I did have a picture of New River Gorge once as an avatar and no one talked to me. I had to change it back.
I had it because a creepy guy was hitting on me because (in his words) "You're cute." He wanted an online thing even though I was set to be married and he already was. I went hiding. -

Why do most blogger hide behind a mask?
I can't speak for anyone other than myself. When I first began blogging I did so under my name, posted a photo and gave my location. I started to receive annoying and eventually sexually suggestive comments from a reader who professed that he was in love with me and ended up stalking me. The police stopped him and ran a check. He had outstanding warrants for several sexual assaults and he was a bail jumper. He was apprehended and went to jail. I deleted that blog and when I began blogging again over a year later I began to use a pseudonym.

I noticed this too. I don't know if there's anything deep to this or not. www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/male-bloggers-baby-sexy-female-avatars-
Identity theft and safety concerns are serious issues for those working online. Also I think it's silly for a man to use a sexy female avatar because they think they will attract more blog traffic. Consider who they attract by using sexy female avatars -- other men. Then consider that 1/2 of the human race is female.

It was an easy decision for polybore because of the utterly repellent nature of their physical form. Few people are capable of seeing past the tentacles, slime, countless lidless and unblinking eyes not to mention the innumerable jagged tooth salivating maws.

This is really the only forum I participate in where that is the case, which is interesting. The other two placesI spend time at the majority post their real pictures, though there are a few who do not.
I wonder too at the baby pics and the men posing as women. I can never quite warm to people who use those kind of avatars. -

Keep trying to convince yourself.
You need some of this for that halo of yours.

I think a lot of us started out being the "REAL" us when the internet first started.
But then there were a bunch of folks who were the "NOT" real them.
And those of us who were the REAL US - learned that the NOT REAL them were after causing problems.
They were either massive trolls, people who intentionally hurt others or stalkers/killers/thieves/rapists/criminals or just plain out jerks.
There were people who had mental health problems - people who demanded you owe them something - and others who just were nasty, plain and rude.
Over time - a lot of us learned, the hard way - that presenting yourself openly and honestly - is not always a good thing on the online world as there are some seriously demented individuals.
Some of us offer our real personalities - and will eventually get to know some folks in REAL LIFE...
Others will just hang on to our anonymity and get to know others at arm's length.
The internet has provided those who want them - masks - and those who do not - the ability to go bare.
I choose to do both - but certainly keep my own identity hidden to a degree.-
Interesting. I started out as "Alice" because my blog was titled Wonderland or Not, and became me later on. I didn't find being Alice any safer as I was stalked and harassed more then than now, and believe me people can find you either way.
I do think that people my age, those who grew p with keyboard in are hands tend to be more open than older folks, because the two other forums I participate in routinely are geared toward 20 somethings, or if not 20 somethings early gen x'ers.
The other difference is they are not forums where people can post fart jokes or post spam messages, they are open, but for some reason there is only a rare troll. maybe because there is somewhat of a theme at both of theme.
I guess what I am saying is that if I were posting some of the stuff I see posted here I'd want a mask too. Some of this stuff is something a parent would never want his kid to see.

As to the MEN who use WOMEN as avatars.
Hmmmmm - well there is certainly a problem with that.
For one - it's deceptive.
It certainly isn't meant for anything good - at least not that I can tell.
Unless it's your child - as an adult you shouldn't have any pics of children either - unless you're into something that positively deals with children.
Otherwise I might have some concerns about you - and not very good ones, at that. -

My sexiness would simply rip a hole in the ozone layer, causing deadly UV rays to be cast upon the earth, resulting in people getting cancer. You don't want that.

Because I don't want people to know I'm not really a 47 year old man writting about political counspiracies, but auctually a 9 year old girl who loves ponies and miley cyrus.

For me, the main reason for the persona, is that it allows me to quell a number of (mostly, but not entirely neurotic) worries I have about being held accountable for some poorly expressed opinion that I dashed off two years ago on a rainy Sunday while high on pixie dust and John Coltrane.
I mean, because blogging requires frequent updating and I, like most bloggers, like to have a good rant now and again, I like to have the feeling that I could write a post called, say, "why I hate dolphins" in a sudden moments of heated anti-dolphin animus without having some friend's cousin's aunt (an inveterate dolphin lover) bitterly scratch my name off her Christmas card list from now until the end of days.
On a related note: part of the joy of blogging for me (and I suspect many people) is the thought that I'm sending messages in bottles: that my stuff (on the rare occasions when someone reads any of it) is going to be read by some strange person from a far away place and not some long suffering loved one who has to pretend to like it.
Best to all of you,
-Mal. -
Some of the non-human avatars are related to blog-branding, blog topics. Some seem to just be personal preference.
A lot of the men using beautiful women avatars are monetized sites looking for high traffic. The theory is that the women will draw people in. But personally, I only find myself suspicious of avatars like that.
I write under my own name and use my own photo. I haven't had any problems with it yet. -
i use my own identity, but after all of the descriptions of chemo side effects and photos of my having my head shaved into a mullet (and then shaved completely) i'm pretty sure that i'm not going to get anyone after me.
in all seriousness though, you DO have to be careful... my little bro was sick a few years ago & my parents set up a "carepages" account for him, and some woman found him who pretended he was her dead son & started telling people all about him - we didn't even know her. My parents quickly took the site down & set up an email list instead... -
I just down want to see my face on the cover magazine without ever receive the royalty money. That is the reason why I must hide my face pretty much. Want to feature my face? sign a contract first.
