Why do some guys have those gigantic stupid earings?

I've noticed more and more that a lot of guys are getting those big gigantic earrings. You know the ones, big like a coin and kind of like African tribe looking which when removed leave behind a big hole. I just think they look totally crap and I'm wondering if anyone knows what the craze or reason behind it is? or why someone would do something so stupid?
And what you think of the craze?

I think it's a pirate thing, either that or a lot of blokes lose their keys so that's where they keep them if they are drinking.

I've often wondered the same thing. It's not really a widespread phenomenon, though. I usually see the same kind of guy doing it.

  They're not super-super popular here in the states, but you see them a lot with the urban hipsters and degenerates in my city. They usually make up only a part of the overall "uniform."
