Why do we hesitate to reveal our true age?

I list my true age on my blog. I am 71. I notice many, if not most, keep their calender age private on their blog profile. I am curious as to why? Do you think revealing your true age would box you into a particular age category? Restrict your sense of connecting? Just a basic need for privacy? (Such as using an avatar that is not an actual photo.)
It is not an issue. I am just curious.

I was a little self-conscious about posting my birth date when I started my blog. I wondered if it would restrict my contacts. It hasn't. I like communicating across generations. I live in a college town and I am an out-going talker in public. I live near a popular college street of bookstores, pubs, cafes, etc. and it is my social environment. I also use the free university bus transit system and have many opportunities to engage with others there.
I am aware of age discrimination. I felt it as a young man myself. A period in my life when I was parent-free, seeking my own identity, and my least interest was listening to some ol' coot lay on me his "words of wisdom". I know that exists for some young people who I encounter. I also know people my age who find it more socially comfortable to live with elders of their own generation, in retirement communities and such. It is life. We all meander through. I am enjoying it. -

Errr, I don't mind mentioning my age. I find it annoying when people think I'm younger than I am, especially because they tend to treat me with less respect because of my "perceived" age. I don't even want to start with stories. Let's just say, most people think I'm around 20 yrs and that I'm just some young pup they can step all over. Grrr... I ain't having none of that!

No, being honest always is good. I had a mother who when she died we children had no idea what her real age - that is until we looked at her birth certificate. We knew "about," how old she was, but she's always claimed to be 39!
Because of that I have always stated my age. Oh, and by the way I am 58.

Age is in inescapable factual number. Letting it define you is a trap, just as if you let your race, economic background, sex or nationality determine who you are. When I was very young, my great-grandmother was my constant intellectual companion. We talked about philosophy, art, politics, life and anything else we could dream up. I would spend all summer with her and I thought she was one of the most wonderful people on earth. I have never cared what age people were, I am interested in human beings in all their forms. Their differentiation just increases the intrigue for me.

Because of ageism. Some people get unfairly discriminated against because of their age, whether young or old.
