Why Do Women Wear Make Up?
Is it that you wear makeups for men or to show other women.
Some options:
To attract men
To enhance their natural beauty
Lack self confidence on their looks

because we live in a society that values beauty in women above all other qualities so women feel they need to enhance their appearance in order to be acceptable members of society.-

Every society values beauty. In some societies men wear makeup and jewelry, in some women. Beauty is a universal concept. -
It's not remotely ridiculous. Take a look at any magazine, any advert, any film, any tv show...when journalists write about beautiful actresses they often refer to them as 'the beauty' even though their appearance is nothing to do with the story. There are plenty of physically unnatractive (or what is supposed to be unnatractive) men on tv, but how many overweight or older women do you see? Of course there are some, but the physical appearance of women on television and in films is disproportionate to the appearance of women in society, whereas this is not really the case with men.
We might, as individuals, think that beauty is unimportant compared to intelligence, ability etc., but our society reinforces the idea that women are supposed to be physically appealing. -
I'm really pale, so if I didn't wear makeup, I would have no discernible facial features. It gives me some color. -

Yeah, I will admit. I draw in eyebrows, but not in a super fake way. Most people don't ever even realize that I draw my eyebrows in until they see me without them.
Naturally, my eyebrows are so sparse they fade to nothing at the arch. So, I fill in the arch and finish them out.
Bad eyebrows kill me. Whenever I see someone with a naturally full and beautiful brows that are completely ungroomed, I itch to grab my tweezers and clean them up.
I would give anything to have naturally full brows that just need to be groomed.
Along the same note, I usually wear fake lashes because my lashes are very, very sparse and short.

I dunno, really. I wear make-up for fancy occasions because it's expected of me. But as a rule, I find it a waste of time and money. Then again, I feel the same way about dresses/skirts. I'd far rather wear tails than a gown!-
I agree with you, make up would be a waste of time and money. A nice brown paper bag would be a much more sensible investment for you.

Because I like it because it adds a little polish, just as a good haircut, nice clothes (casual or otherwise) and a sharp pair of shoes (casual or otherwise).
I don't need to attract men, plus been happily married 31 years
Self confidence has nothing to do with make up
Don't care what other women think of my looks

I actually wear make up to make me look older. Since I'm said to look younger than my age, I look like a fresh graduate and so, I must look mature for my job to make me look more credible. -

The most a woman should wear is a subtle shade of lipstick IMO.-

It makes my eyes look spectacular. As my eyes look spectacular, I feel more powerful, both over men and women. However, I don't normally bother doing make-up at all, as my skin looks a lot better without it. -

I have no problem going without makeup, but I think I look a lot better with a subtle amount of makeup. -

I love how make up, hair styles, clothing can be used to express our personalities. I had LOTS of fun with Mary Quant make-up and look in the late 60's, it was wild and it was fun and perfectly expressed who I am inside. I can't have that look now (I am 53) BUT now it manifests itself in my art

Why can't mascara be an extension of my personality? I like to feel pretty; mascara helps me feel pretty. I like to stand out; mascara helps me stand out. I like to be paid attention to; people pay more attention to me when I wear mascara. If it makes me feel good, what's it to you?

I don't wear make-up. I guess so whoever I am dating isn't too bummed out when he see's me without it??? I kinda like to be "this is me, this is what you get" when it comes to appearance (in a respectful was of course)
Nothing wrong with wearing it, though I can't stand seeing people while thick layers of the stuff - I dont get that at all! -
I wear make-up for the same reason I wear high heels. I do it for myself.
Make-up and high heels make me feel more confident. Because I am short and look very young for my age, it also helps my professional appearance at work. People take me more seriously when I wear make-up.
Of course, outside of work, I rarely wear make-up unless I am having a big night out. -
I usually wear bare minimum makeup because I don't have time in the morning, but when I get the chance, putting on some really cool eye shadow is so much fun -
Perhaps for the same reason men obsess with their balding heads???
They want to be deemed attractive.
It gives them more confidence.

I'm not sure why we do. I guess so I can look like a raccoon when I cry. I don't wear it much because I'm that lazy but I clean up okay when need be. My soon to be daughter in law made me throw out my makeup and buy new. Apparently it goes bad after 20 years...who knew-
Crap. So now I have to decide if I buy more in case I want it or simply use the lack as an excuse to never wear it again.

Im a gay guy,and I find women wearing make up especially if its beautifully and elegantly applied so attractive,it empowers them,ofcourse depending on the occasion hehe -

I can feel a kind of accusation behind the question, and a kind of excuse behind the answers.
Men if you do not like women with make up, simple: choose one that do not wear make up, and leave the others do what they want.
I do wear make up when I find the time, and that makes me feel coool!

I wear bare essentials mineral makeup if going out in public
Around the house I don't wear this stuff.
Enhancement and to take a better photo or video is the reason why I would wear makeup
but I can't wait to wash this stuff off when I get home. Makeup goes far back in ancient days. The sumerians and egyptians wore makeup. Makeup is not only for women, but lot's of male actors wear makeup to enhance their features and stage performances.
Psychologically makeup can also be one's mask, which distance the wearer from reality.
A place where the true you can hide and observe the world around them while looking out
of a mask or veil, a 2nd skin. -

For more formal occasions. Dinner w/ hubby, gonna have a family pic taken, Christmas, Thanksgiving... Most days I go without dressing up. -
to highlight there features.. mostly women dont like the way they look, so they try to look as good as they can. -

HOW BOUT ITS FUN. I guess there are no artists in here b/c the first thing I thought of (besides the obvious which is societal standards placed on women to be beautiful)was how much fun it is to use your face as a pallette. i've been doing it since I was a little girl. Eyeshadow is my fav! Makeup is an ART, hence 'makeup artist'.-
Yes, I am an artist and yes it is fun to see others with make up and was fun to play with when I was younger.

I think the topic of make up tends to get a little too philosophical... Most women wear make up for the same reason we wear lace panties and hair clips..cause it's a girly thing to do that makes us feel feminine and special. It dosen't mean you have low self esteem or don't like your face, it just means your a feminine woman most of the time. SOME women who take it too far and never leave the house without "war paint" or cake it on like a clown...have emotional issues.-
eh I was with you til the end. I am into "alternative fashion" which sometimes calls for caked on make up, be it a jeweled brow line or heavy eye make up. Some just have different taste in styles, I wouldn't say that means emotional issues... I would say that makes them creative/expressive/or as I call it "punk rock".

I heard a good one on the radio this morning: Women who wear make up have better balance, and as a result have less falls. So in short they're saying that women who wear make up live longer.

It was just another example of how someone is obviously paying scientists to do the most ridiculous studies and they're coming up with likewise results.
As I said they're saying it takes balance to apply make-up. All to do with symetry or something like that. So women who wear and apply their own make up have better balance when walking. It also applies to the sun protection of some make ups also.
Its all a bogus study if you ask me -

Necro-posted and all, I will give a shot an my answer.
I rarely wear makeup on a day-to-day basis. However, that doesn't mean that I don't wear it ever. If we were going out someplace special, if it's a special occasion for example, I will put on make up. As well as clean, nice clothes (maybe even a dress and heels!).
Why? Because I am using fashion to differentiate boring everyday activities from special occasions. If it's special, there's no reason not to let everyone know about it, and also make the effort to break from your daily look to commemorate the event.
Kind of like decorating your house for a holiday, you're decorating yourself in celebration.
Otherwise, I will wear make up is I am sick and don't look like my normal self.-

To look better to other people -
Bc its fun. I've loved makeup since I was 3....u know playing dress up and stuff. Now I use it as almost like a mood ring. U can always tell what mood I'm in or the different times of day. Its just fun.... -
It makes us feel pretty or maybe because we have uneven skin tones or a zit and according to society that is so not cool! So we head to wal-mart or Macy's depending on how much you wanna spend...buy some magic in a tube or bottle and holy shit we are pretty again!
