Eric Weiner, author of THE GEOGRAPHY OF BLISS, tells of research that shows that Republicans in the USA are some 50 percent happier than the Democrats. People Power Granny explores this issue today in her post, and asks you to describe where you stand on your political leanings and your happiness. What do you think the reason would be that Republicans are much happier than Democrats?

I think the overall....let's forget parties....that progressives tend to have consciences that bug them more with guilt when injustices are going on around them. At the same time, overall many conservatives simply ignore the suffering around them and concentrate on self and family first.

I think that is the most unfounded and grossest statement I have ever seen you make on BC. You obviously have no idea what conservatives stand for.

The number 1 reason more conservatives are happier is because a larger percentage of conservatives believe in a higher power, i.e. God.

April, your comment was just as sweeping and incorrect as the first LMAO..

      Goodness gracious.

IMO you just made the same error in judgment as the party you pointed the finger at.

My statement has been proven by scientific research. If you wish to argue it, I suggest you read the facts first.

Scientific research? LMAO OK, April - first you'd have to prove that all of the conservatives are practicing Christians, then you would h ave to prove that a belief in God is actually what makes them happy.

I have yet to see any studies that prove either as it cannot.

And, the top conservative hat is a well known Christian that I can think of is Ann Coulter who is arrogant, but certainly not happy and filled with peace. She is, in fact, a rather ugly person (on the inside). So, me thinks you're not working in the realm of facts, ma'am.

Edited to add - a great deal of democrats are Christian too - so what does that say about your theory?

I think it is incorrect to assume that republicans are "happier" than democrats because quite frankly, what makes people happy varies from person to person.

While your question is excessively broad, IMHO, it is nevertheless true that much of the Republican agenda has been implemented over the past 28 years. In the previous 20 years, the Democratic agenda was largely implemented.

However, politics is like a pendulum. With Obama likely to win, and assuming that Democrats will gain a majority in the Congress, the "happier" group may change.

Too many freaks, not enough circuses.

That goes for all politicians: Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Greenies, you name it.

Don't know why this thread got dragged up from the mire of time, but it's kind of funny in light of the past week and McCain's and the Republicans' general grumpiness about the media attention Obama has been getting.

Contentment results in happiness. Generally, republicans are content with the way things are; democrats want change. The word "conservative" means "resistant to change."
