Why do you think there are so many people sick or suffering from major illness today?

Think about it for a minute.
It just seems like so many people are getting diagnosed with so many illnesses at very young ages. How many people do you know who have or have had Cancer, Alzheimer's (youngest verified case was 17), M.S., ADD, ADHD, Autism, Mental Illness, Asthma, Heart Disease, Obesity and so many more?
When you were a kid, how many of your friends had serious illnesses? Kids today (to me that would be you 20-30 somethings out there) how many of your friends are sick?
What do you think is causing this increase in illness, if you agree there is such an increase, and is there any way to stop it? How do the toxins in our food, personal care products and environment impact our health? How aware or worried are you about the toxins that surround you?

Yes like William Tell says, it's a whole bag of things.
Increase of population, elderly population, better healthcare are also factors, we have better testing for all these diseases.
Muzamilsa has obviously read The Secret. To blame illnesses on a lack of positive attitude or stress is not fair or realistic. Many people with great positivity get ill, it's not their fault.
Pollution is a big factor, but then how can you explain some people getting illnesses who live next door to others who don't. Genetic and chemical interaction must play a part too.-
I have had John E. Garst, Ph.D. (Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, Toxicology and Nutrition) make some comments on my blog that illness, cancers and toxins may not affect everyone the same way because of folate. He says that some people have a folate deficiency and those are people that are left open to illness.
I have also been reading a lot about some people having mitochondrial disease leaving them open to environmental assaults and illness. This is what happened in the case of Hannah Poling where the US Government ruled her unknown mitochondrial disease left her open to an assault from the MMR vaccine which led to her Autism.

Ill tell you what the problem is, pharmaceutical companies push new drugs on doctors, playing to their inability to spend proper time with people due to time limitations. Therefore pushing said drugs to the general population. People are sick because ...
1) they don't eat enough proper foods, too many foods nowadays are lacking in the proper nutrition.
2) the processed foods (foods with alot of ingredients) are basically carbs therefore causing people to store more fat.
3) So many drugs are given that no longer the body can do what it is made for and that is fight for itself. It depends on said drugs to fight it's battles.
If the human population was educated. I mean SERIOUSLY educated. I mean lets spend as much money in a year as pharmaceutical companies spend to develop new drugs to educate people on how to strenthen their bodies and help their own bodies fight for themselves. You'd notice a large increase in health.
The pharmaceutical companies are to blame for the poor health in the world whether you want to believe it or not. Look around, the symptoms people suffer from are a result of another underlying problem. Alzheimers, cancer, ms, acne. They're all a result of something else going on under the surface. -

I'm not sick I don't know that many people who are chronically ill or diagnosed with illnesses and though know a kid with JD and ADD, I know a ton more whose fathers were doctors and who gave them adderall in college to help them study even though they did not have add.
I imagine doctors or researchers would be those best to answer these questions, though the obesity factor is because this country eats too much. My mother told me when they were growing up a little of cola for the whole family was the size of a quart...now it's two liters....
Illness doesn't affect everyone the same way anyway, even I know that it depends in your familial tenancies and your genes and some illnesses may be provoked by other illnesses. -
Back when I was a little girl.there was no such label as ADD or ADHD - these kids were considered out of control or space cadettes but got no help from doctors or medicine. They were on their own. Back then the autistic kids were considered "mentally retarded" and did not go to regular schools. Some were even kept indoors as if they were a family's shameful secret. Us "normal" kids did not even know they existed. My friend had a brother who was autistic and I didn't even know he existed until we were in our 20's. I think there is alot more awareness nowadays. In the past people didn't talk about these things and were more private. On the other hand, there are alot more problems caused by chemicals in our air, food and drink nowadays due to several decades of uncontrolled polluting. You should see the extensive list of known carcinogens that the American Cancer Society has!

my email is shane@environmentalbooty.com I would love a link to the list.

Ever bother to think that maybe the problems, ie: autism, add, adhd are caused by the pollutants they put in vaccinations? Look at japan I said it once on this post I'll say it again and back it up. Japan had an 85% drop in SIDS after changing the regulations to give kids Vaccinations AFTER the age of 2. 85% that's a pretty significant coincidence? Don't you think. Not to mention the CRAP that's in vaccinations.
For people who are interested. Here is what is ACTUALLY in vaccinations.

I'm one of those weird people that doesn't get sick
Which people think is great, it sucked never having a sick day from school. Grade School, High School, College, perfect attendance in all of them. -
-
I actually blame generational drug use. Overall, children have become dumber and lazier since drugs became more accessible on a wide scale.
-
This reminds of a lost tribe of people discovered years ago, still living and surviving in their old ways. They were not getting sick or ill like modern people. They still had that natural immunity to diseases. After they were introduced to the modern way of living, they started getting sick.

We able to detect these illnesses sooner now then we could in the past. We have made medical advancements. So we detect these things earlier now. Are they actually more frequent then they used to be, or is it that we just able to detect these things now and have names for them but are relatively just as frequent as they used to be?

There is a lot of research going on. It seems it is a combination of factors - environmental toxins, processed foods, obesity, epigenetics (infuences that cause our genes to change the way they express themselves, leading to disease),stress, lack of vitamin D....we have screwed things up a bit.

Do you need to stay healthy? Of course, everybody do. According to Buddhism good health is the prime wealth. Solution is simple, but the road to destination is pretty tough. For the start, we can get back to natural food. Then again that's linked with the eco-drive. That's the right stuff: the Real Mccoy.

Absolutely I think toxins play a big part, but there are other mitigating factors. The folate thing is dead on, but I bet it's not "just" folate.
If you're a label reader in the grocery store you'll find that a ton of the stuff people eat doesn't really qualify as food. It could be used for glue, paint, and perhaps wallboard, but I wouldn't eat it. Build homes with it IMO
If you go fresh you still have an issue, because chem farming reduces the nutritional value of foods and obviously adds toxins. The soil itself is suffering at this point.
Non-GMO engineering/cross breeding for hardiness and resistances to various pests and diseases can also reduce the nutritional value of foods. I won't even get into the subject of GMO.
They pick the food before it's ripe, so it hasn't got the full complement of vitamins, nutrients, and micro-nutrients it should. It also doesn't have quite the flavor it should.
Solution: Plant a garden.
Stress certainly plays a part in overall health. It makes sense, the body deals with mental stress by producing various chemicals, cortisol, etc. These things cause inflammation, and so on. The body can't heal itself as efficiently, because it's already fighting with a chronic condition - your stress. De-stress and your self-healing mechanisms get back to working properly.
Gratefully, I come from fairly sturdy stock. We don't tend to get sick. I've been to the doctor once in the past 10 years. Then again, I was raised to be pretty nutritionally conscious and have an aversion to artificial anything in my food - most artificial flavors/colors taste like industrial waste.-
I am in love with you. Thank you for all of that info. If you have anything else on folic deficiency and illness let me know. The body is so complex and I just do not think people realize what the consequences will be of their unhealthy choices.
I certainly think that my family is going to the store tonight and getting some things to start our garden. We have an acre here in the middle of suburbia and the kids will love it, my online community will get exposed to the idea and no toxins. My hubby is even on board!
I truly feel there has never been a better time to be able to provide your own foods which are safe. -
A bit more on folic acid deficiency for you
Folic acid reduces the amount of homocysteine in the blood, the homocysteine is associated with blockages in the arteries, i.e., heart attacks. Given this fact, I think one can come to the conclusion that not enough folate causes homocysteine to rise. So as a preventative measure you would want to ensure you get enough of it.
It's not quite that cut and dry, other vitamins may be involved. Nothing is ever that simple is it?
Pretty good info here, and a nice stuffy source.
www.quackwatch.org/03HealthPromotion/homocysteine.html
According to the NIH (if you want more depth I'd go to their Web site.)
Folic acid deficiency in pregnant women can cause severe birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. This means increased risk spina bifida, and you could conclude some neurological problems as well.
I wonder if this plays a part in the rising cases of autism. If they have that tendency, the deficiency causes the communication centers of the brain not to develop fully and properly I have no evidence of this, just contemplating the possible connection.
A deficiency can cause your children not to grow properly. Looks like Popeye was right. It works with other nutrients in creating and using proteins in the body and blood - building red blood cells. So you can get certain types of anemia if you don't get enough.
Eat your Spinach (especially good with fresh garlic and crushed red pepper)
Beans have it too if you're a greenophobe.

My good old days were filled with Ding Dongs, Twinkies and Oatmeal Cream Pies. My poor mom was fed a lot of marketing about dinner in a box. Thank God she also taught me about fresh foods as well. Please know I am in this journey with everyone else. I am not perfect but even small changes can make a difference in our health.

Something I posted in another thread
...I quite recently met someone who has been intoxicated with mercury, and learned you cannot cure yourself of any underlying condition in such a case. Further, you cannot detoxify yourself of mercury in presence of a negative electromagnetic field (field which impairs the immune system). This is usually not recognized by mainstream medecine...
"Dr. M. Hanson, science director of the Swedish Association of Dental Mercury Patients, puts it this way: "a number of syndromes such as neurasthenia, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, chemical sensitivity, amalgam poisoning and electro-sensitivity are interrelated, identical or overlapping. Many of the symptoms of these disorders (with individual variations) are the same. This, together with known effects of EMF, heavy metals and chemicals and the result of therapies indicates that very basic biochemical and biophysical processes are disturbed, such as the calcium balance, etc.""

What we eat has a lot to do with our health, but right up there with the food choices is our lifestyle choices too, stress is a biggie when it comes to health problems, lack of a normal sleep pattern is also.. These days it seems everyone is going going going, living off quick ready made food, busy busy busy schedules, stay up till early morning hours to catch up on emails, games, tv programs.. There seems to be no time to stop and smell the roses anymore.. not to mention lack of exercise.. sigh!

Ongoing public education programs and the internet are making more of us aware of health and disease. Additionally, this results in people talking more openly about medical conditions and providing all of us with constant reminders.
As for increases in those affected by disease, our lack of exercise or even movement contributes to making many of us ill. Add to that questionable nutrition, exposure to man made chemicals released into our environment and there are definitely increased risks to health.
However, many conditions are becoming more treatable and the numbers of people affected is reducing. While some cancers are showing more frequently, others are dropping in numbers or are more easy to treat so affect people less.
All in all, some things are becoming less frequent while others are increasing. However, we rarely advertise those things that are getting better...
