I answered this question many years ago on a very special weekend retreat with my husband and today more than ever, I need to ask others and answer it myself once again.

I want to go on living because I want to look into the eyes of the ones I love and tell them how precious they are to me. I want them to know that at the deepest level. I want to write to them and tell them the world would never be the same without them. I want every person I meet to know that their life was meant to be . . . there are no mistakes . . . they have a purpose. I want to touch their faces and tell them it's all going to be okay . . . we're going to make it . . . the human race, with all our faults and all our unfinished dreams . . . we have a right to be here. I want to see another sunrise, another sunset.
I want to know that my life has made a difference and to quote my favorite poet, Mary Oliver,at the end of her famous poem, "When Death Comes":
"I don't want to end up simply having visited this world."
Think about it. . .it's really a great question to ponder and share : Why do you want to go on living?

I'd seen some who won't even acknowledge the question at their lowest times and death is most welcome.. but we don't simply live or die in our convinience or at our own chosing...

My answer to that is because of some "unfinished business"...
    1. comeintomyworld
I've seen that too. It's sad and such a waste. Your answer's a great reminder to tie up those loose ends, make amends with the past and forgive ourselves. And you're right . . . death doesn't come at our convenience. Regrets and unfinished business make for a lousy ending.

    I am living for Dec 21 2012.
Great changes are ahead of us.
What a great time it is to be living.
    1. comeintomyworld
It IS a great time to be living. We've lived through amazing changes and advances in science and technology, etc. The greatest one that's on the horizon though, is the shift in human consciousness . . . the great awakening! Imagine if we were all really awake?
  6. BlogEntrepreneur
    I have to ask...what is Dec. 21 2012.
    1. Fashionisto
4 days before christmas, that's all
    2. friedclyde
dec 2012 according to the mayan calendar is the end of the world

but its not just the mayan calendar that predicts it, a few more things like the polar shift and the so called global warming

but i feel global warming is a term given so we can rationalize the situation ..... i think we all studied abt the sun getting hotter

as the sun gets hotter it emits more solar flares....more solar flares = more heat rises on earrth (the northern lights are one of the most beautiful things arent they )

so my friend its absolutely the best time to be alive....time to watch a system built to enslave take a natural end to itself

perhaps...or perhaps i may live to forty or perhaps not
    3. SolReka
Dec 21 2012 has many meanings.
I agree with comeintomyworld - it is all about a shift in human consciousness . A transcendence to the 5th dimension. It is a subject which requires you to read about and understand for yourself. I do not try and preach this stuff, as people take a disliking to you. Instead I simply suggest people read a bit about the subject, and then make their own minds up.

Also read about the hadron collider and the 5th dimension.
      Cheers
    4. friedclyde
SolReka i have read about the shift of human consiousness as well, the ascension by Dr. Michael Sharp
    5. Dukepro25
      There are no mistakes!

      Interesting concept - human consciousness.

An intriguing idea - Conscious Evolution.

The question is, where will we take it?

Will we squander it, or will we make something of ourselves?

      2012?

Scary, but exciting, the possibilities are.

In my opinion, I don't think anything will happen.

      But that's just as scary.

Where will the next evolution take us?

I for one will subscribe to hope.

      On the mater of death:

I would want enough time to make peace with my loved ones, but I would not want to prolong the inevitable.

If it's my time to go, I would want to go willingly rather than fight it.

    comeintomyworldI liked your input.

Mine is simply to understand better and finally to get my ticket for the hereafter.
    1. comeintomyworld
To understand better is a great reason. If we all "understood", we wouldn't have to fight and there'd be a real long line waiting for those tickets!

December 12, 2012, the "End Times." Zappo! Lights out! Ball game over! End of the world as we know it! Confirmed by the tunnels under the pyramids of Ancient Egypt.

I think in general my answer would be "curiosity." Like some of the sentiments in the OP, I'm curious about who my son will grow up to be. I'm curious what achievements we're capable of making. Life is just too darn exciting for me. I just hope that when my time comes I can look back and say I've lived a complete life. I think my biggest fear is that I'll be wishing for more time, or will have left something important undone.
    1. comeintomyworld
I like your answer kdawg68. I think many could relate to these feelings. I know I surely can!

      Hi Friedclyde,
It makes me happy that you came back to the conversation. Don't ever worry.
Something so great is coming and I'm sure you'll live to see it. Don't worry because it just has to happen inside YOU. That's the ticket! Live to 100, my friend!
    2. comeintomyworld
      Hi Fashionisto,
With your sense of humor and fun, who wouldn't want to go on living? I can see this is one of the gifts you share with the world. I sense a really bright light!!

who is removing comments from the community? id like to see what people have to say, whether I agree or not, you know I had a discussion that was incredibly popular, it had over 100 posts in 2 days, and then somebody took it upon themselves to report it.

    The discussion, you ask?
"Have you ever had sex with a celebrity?"

    1. comeintomyworld
I meant the human race as a whole . . . humanity. An evolutionary shift where our SPECIES functions on a higher level of consciousness.. . the next step for mankind. Some of us are already experiencing this, some are on the brink of it and some are still stuck in the mud.
Some call it awareness, enlightenment, illumination, . . . inner wisdom. Call it what we may. . . to me it's like a light going on in a dark room and suddenly . . . aha! now I see!

Having those big brown eyes of my baby boy gazing up at me with unconditional Love and Trust. What more reason would I need?
    1. comeintomyworld
None whatsoever! It all starts there.
  18. fsredwine
I want to go on living because I want to become the person that I was destined to be. I want to fulfill my purpose on earth. There are people whose path I am designed to meet and lives that I am created to encourage. This is what I need to do before I leave the earth.
    1. comeintomyworld
You're an inspiration . . . and with desires like these, how could they not come to pass?
      Peace . . . on your journey!
  19. Enn
For me, I want not just to go on living but living a healthy life. It is a parent's desire to see their children grow and witness them transform into successful members of society. What a great joy to live a worthy life before I shall close my eyes forever....
    1. comeintomyworld
Passing on our love, encouragement and values to our children is like planting trees in the garden of tomorrow. How wonderful life can be watching the transformation of our children with pride!
  20. livefree
I don't think you ever really realize how short life is until you have children. Watching mine age makes me realize how short life really is.

I am not afraid of death it will come when it comes. I chose not to ponder on things like this.

    Things to live for
    Chocolate
    sex
    love
    great movies
    making friends
did i mention making love (lols)

seriously though, Life is a precious gift. There is no other creature on the planet that can experience things the way that humans do. Smelling a beatiful fragrance or laying on a comfy couch can be delightful.

Life is what we make it. My reality is not your reality and vica versa.

I think most people want to live because they fear death. Once you defeat that fear then you live to live if that makes any sense to anyone.

I am a moments person, nothing is greater then the moment you are in right now.
    cheers !

      It's all good my friend.

There's a method to the madness.
  22. wuyouwuyi
    we have no choice.
    thats what almost everybody do.
we come to this earth with nothing
build up our knowledge, experience, wealth, power
look after your kids so you have to live..if no have kids then look after parents..if no parents then ambitions..and so on and on
in the end we left with nothing of the above.
who knows the cycle may just repeat itself for ourselves
But it is a wonderful world depending on how you look at it
for me i want to go on living for some of the reasons mentioned above and achieve something..it doesnt matter if it will one day be taken away from me..it is the process that is even more meaningful
  23. Descartes
There have been many times when I was not all that interested in living, and yet here I remain. I have always found it interesting that some many religions are basically End of The World cults-the Buddhist ideal of perfection is eternal death and Christianity is all about Jesus coming back and kicking butt.
But to answer the question, I want to go on living to see what happens next.
    1. SolReka
I know exactly where you're coming from Descarte. I too have been on that dark road. It is not a nice path to tread.
Things are now slowly starting to make a bit more sense now. The jigsaw of life is piecing itself together.
I too go on living - to see what happens next.

I am petrified that post 2012 the world will still be the same as it is now. I am not a nihilist, but if the world continues in the shallow, greedy, money driven manner it is now then I will be thinking what's the point.
Why do we have human suffering in today's society? Hmmm - poverty - what the *&*& - it is unacceptable.
I have only one goal in my life, to try and give unprivileged people (like me) choice and some freedom. It is only a small thing I offer - a solar oven, but maybe it could be the beginning in a change in thinking for the masses.
      You are not alone Descarte
      Peace light and love

    Replying my reply @ comeintomyworld

It's clear that people still don't understand how to deal with their differences and therefore they are stereotyped, aren't they?
  25. SolReka
    Couldn't agree more.

When folk don't understand something then they fear it and end up hating it.

    Humanity is my family.

Dec 21, 2012 will come and go. Trust me. No one knows when the end will come. Remember the big talk about Y2K ? It'll be fine.

To answer your question, for the most part I do my best to enjoy life and the beauty of it all. I feel there is so much more I am here for and need to accomplish.

I wish everyone would show true kindness.
  29. SolReka
y2k is very different to 2012, y2k was simply a computer issue - computers weren't hard coded to accept y2k date format, hence the mad rush to make all computers y2k compliant.

I worked on y2k as a programmer, simply a case of changing date from yy to yyyy

2012 has many reasons for something happening; Galactic alignment, solar cycle, the hadron collider, and the simple fact most things in life (maybe I am delusional) are pointing to some shift (a great change) in th world we live.

I totally agree that true kindness should be more widely spread.

    Peace, light and love
    Rob

Honest;y? To dance. I don't know if I would want to go on living without it. I mean, obviously I have friends and family that I love dearly, but if I didn't dance, I really don't know where my life would be, if I would ever have encountered these people, and if they would be able to tolerate me without my having a release, a daily therapy session that is ballet class.
  31. MichaelBradford
My children need me now more than ever. I can't imagine what they would go through with out me. I want to be a blessing to them for the rest of their lives and share with them as much joy, happiness, sadness and trials as come our way.
  32. comeintomyworld
I am so happy to read all your comments and heartfelt responses to my question. You give me hope! All of you! You are gifts . . . your dreams, your aspirations, your open willingness to live your lives to the fullest . . . to make your mark on this world . . . to leave a legacy to your children . . .and yes, to believe in a better tomorrow! I'm smiling tonight.
    This is good . . .
  33. mlinauer
I want to go on living because life can't always be this bad. I am holding on to the hope that life will become better for me. Oh I should probably put something on here about how I am living for my wife
    1. comeintomyworld
The fact that you took the time to answer this question is a sign that there's still hope . . . so hang on. You're here for a purpose and your life is important . . . so give yourself a big hug and jump into the moment.
After all . . . that's really all we have.

the scarriest thing for me righ now is Yellowstone Volcano activity

    volcanoes.usgs.gov/yvo/

he November 9, 2007 issue of Science Magazine features an article, Accelerated uplift and magmatic intrusion of the Yellowstone Caldera, 2004 to 2006, by YVO scientists from the University of Utah and USGS. Using GPS and another satellite-based technique (InSAR), the authors find that parts of the Yellowstone Caldera rose as much as 7 cm (~3") per year from 2004 to 2006. The uplift is most noticeable at the White Lake GPS station, as has been discussed in our monthly YVO updates over the past year. Chang and his colleagues credit the relatively rapid uplift to magma entering the region beneath the Yellowstone Caldera. During this period of uplift, there have been relatively few earthquakes at Yellowstone. Heat and gas flow from the geysers and hot springs also remain unchanged. Calderas such as Yellowstone can display this sort of geologic behavior, even for centuries or millennia, without erupting. Read more about the uplift in our article Recent ups and downs of the Yellowstone Caldera. Also see the University of Utah press release.

Isn't yellowstone supposed to be a super volcano ? I read about it somewhere; I think it was wikipedia.

Well if it's true then if yellowstone erupts, then thats the end.
    2. comeintomyworld
That's something we have no control over and if it happens, oh well, at least we'll all go together. In the meantime . . . got to LIVE!

Good Morning Everyone! It's a brand new day! Another chance to do it right, to tell someone you love them, to lend a helping hand . . . anything that cheers your heart and makes you think of why you want to go on living.
Bless the Earth and all its creatures! Go to the mirror, look past that face and deep into your eyes . . . yoohoo . . .You're still in there!
  37. alexmcone
I want to go on living becoz I've havent had enough of the people I know. Family, friends, ex-girlfriends and all.

Besides, I want to see the world.
  38. Dukepro25
I think there is a lot more to life that I haven't experienced and I would want to stick around for that.

My family & my passions (Art, Photography, Writing, etc).

It's an excellent day to be alive!
  39. JeanR
I look at my life like I'm something gooey and good baking in the oven. Every once in a while I open the door and see if I'm "done yet" and I'm not. I still have many things to learn, teach and experience on earth, even though I'm probably older than most of you here on this forum. I've been through the best that life has to offer and the worse and with each life-altering event I get a little closer to being "done" and ready to come out of the oven i.e. pass the world over to new generation while I go swim with the fishes, kick the bucket, eat dirt or whatever colorful expression we want to use to avoid facing our own mortality.
    1. Dukepro25
      Love your analogy.
  40. neobluepanther
...because, after all has been said and done, life is still beautiful!
  41. JeanR
Thanks, Dukepro25! When I go to the nursing home I'm going to ask for an Easy-Bake oven to play with, too, and I'll be the only one who knows why I keep opening its door to peek inside.
    1. Dukepro25
      LOL

      Awww...

      Cute image.

      God Bless Jean!
  42. twistedteenager
I want to live because suicide is most likely to be painful.
  43. SportsNarrative
This 2012 nonsense is really tiresome.

Let me guess, when that date comes and goes and nothing remarkable occurs and *gasp* the world doesn't end, it will be because of the combined consciousness and powerful minds of those who claimed that it would in fact end...

That's the same pathetic response all these doomsayers use when their apocalyptic predictions don't come to pass.
  44. nardeeisms
...because I'm absolutely sure that there is **something; a specific "something" out there waiting for me to do. Designed for me and for me only. I don't know what it is...but I sure wish it would hurry up.

**This would be in addition to the fulfillment I already am achieving as a wife and as a mother.

    ...just my two cents.
