Religion is all speculation. Nothing is proven. To argue religion is not much different then the old Victorian era question…how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? There were actually serious questions about that topic at the time. Dogma and theology are fine, and I support anyone following their muse. As long as it is your OWN muse and you don’t demand another follow it too. That is not the situation. It is astounding that in many nations, law is governed by religion. Thank goodness for the idea of separation of church and state. I completely support anyone following his or her muse without interference. But utterly oppose anyone inflicting his or her muse on others. What gets people angry about religion is when people imagine their own beliefs are so terribly important, that everybody has to subscribe to them. Blah phooey on that!

jacqueroxx, if you were bashing religion, I would understand. Because you are right, people create religions, and then claim the religion actually is ruled by a higher authority, whether it be a God or nature, or something else awe-inspiring beyond the fallacies of man. (There are religions that are exceptions to this) So now if join and now belong to this religion that is said to originate from a so-called higher authority. A member uses this appeal to authority to justify their actions, whether these actions be ill or not. They are even granted special privileges by their country if the belong to a particular religion, etc...

It's a cop out, a cover up.

Not all religions fall into what I have described, but the ones we have a distaste for often do. Religion doesn't have to be this way, but many of them are.

The religions that take a more naturalisticrealistic approach I have far less distaste for. Many of which are eastern based. Taoism, Zen Buddhism, etc... While they may not be perfect, they sure beat the others.

@morgantj
I agree and request that it be recognized that religions founded on paternalism are war-like. It was not women and who created these combative religions. Women tend to be cooperators. The forerunners of these religions that attempt to rationalize and justify territorial violence and killing (might is right) were Goddess based (nature based) religions. They were replaced with paternalistic religions, wherein women and children became mere chattels to be bought, sold, and given away, or taken in wars.

To give everything for one’s country is to worship one’s country. In other words for those who take this position nationalism becomes religion and patriotism turns into idolatry, which is neither moral nor rational.

Edit: The reason I'm editing so much is that my vision is really bad. I do want to discuss but I must stop now. The eye strain is just too much. :(

That is at the heart of it. We have an instinct for survival, and from that arises the fist line of selfishness which is needed to serve this instinct for self preservation.

These days I ponder on to what we owe our instinct for survival to? Evolution? How can we justify even staying alive? To replicate for the purpose of the survival of the species? In which more people will attempt to justify staying alive, for what? to replicate again? But why? Why the need? If life were to cease, then so what. this may sound fatalist, but all the justifications for these things are subjective, and really valueless. To ask why is to suggest that there is an objective purpose, which there is not. Purpose and value are only placed if we exist, if we don’t exist, then again, so what. Some will say, just enjoy the ride. But why must I? Because I have no other choice other then to suffer or die? And if I choose or am determined to suffer and/or die, How can one justify that happiness is better or above these two options?

ooo, timethief, interesting point :) Selfishness goes a long way to ensure that an individual can live to pass on more of his/her genes (cannot escape evolutionary theory :( ).
But, I think one can make the argument that our 'survival instinct'-that immediate physiological response to adversive stimuli--is an unconscious reaction, and selfishness, in itself, denotes a certain personal awareness of the actions an individual undertakes. At least in my opinion.
And, see, this is the kind of incoherency I spout when I'm overdue for sleep :)

@morgantj
off-topic
Indeed. Sometimes I wonder that if we weren't selfish then would we have survived as a species? People and animals will cooperate only if they as individuals are given reasons to do so.

Evolutionary biology has been transformed by the "selfish gene" notion, popularized by Richard Dawkins, of Oxford University, which essentially asserts that animals, including man, act altruistically only when it brings some benefit to copies of their own genes. This happens under two circumstances: when the altruist and the beneficiary are close relatives, such as bees in a hive, and when the altruist is in a position to have the favor returned at a later date. This new view holds that there simply are no cases of cooperation in the animal kingdom except these.

Adaptation and Natural Selection (1966), by George Williams, a professor of biological sciences at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Williams's message was that evolution pits individuals against each other far more than it pits species or groups against each other.

Yeah, exactly. One time, I was in a Jeepney (mode of transportation for the public, think a bus) and then someone enters with papers in his hand, apparently letters made by their foundation talking about the poor and then asking for donation. He began saying a lot of words and I don't even understand what he was trying to say. it seems like he just memorized everything. Then he opens his eyes after his 'thing' and asks for money. I gave him like 2 dollars anyway. I was thinking about the needy! lol

I am not sure why some people get angry by others not following the same religion as they do. I am a Christian (from one of the more liberal denominations) but have off-line friends who are Jewish, Buddhist, Atheist, Agnostic, Wiccan, Bahá'í, and Muslim as well as from other Christian denominations.

I am always happy to discuss others' beliefs with them and don't try to convert anyone else. What others believe is their own choice.

Religion doesn't make me angry, Religious people that try to jamb it down my throat do!
There are many different ones out there, I have not found the one that is right for me as of yet, but the people that come to my door, or try to convert me on the street are the ones that ultimately push me even further away from said religion.
Many people just want to make this very personal choice on their own, and don't need people harassing them about it.

Just my personal views on the subject.

Nobody's brought this up, but the question, "Why does religion make people angry?" contains an assumption.

It's sort of like the old "have you stopped beating your wife?" question, where any simple answer is is either an admission to wife-beating, or a denial of same.

Oh, well: nothing new here.

@halfcrazy
I agree with you. IMO in an online community where diversity prevails like this one, we are all best served by not posting religious stuff to the General Discussion forum. There are 13 Christian groups at BC and IMO that's where religious topics ought to be posted http://www.blogcatalog.com/groups/tag/Christian

Those of other religions are also free to create their own groups as well http://www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/bc-groups-find-one-start-one
