Why I Hate Politics on BC
Posted by Stillthinking • 4/03/09 • Subscribe to this Discussion [RSS] • Report This Topic
Topics: general discussion boards, no politics
After having participated in a few political discussions on BC, I will no longer be taking part in any threads involving political discussion for the following reasons:
1. I can no longer tolerate uninformed opinions generated by blind followers of conservative talk show hosts. I don't let liberal mouthpieces tell me what to think and I resent being told that I am brainwashed by the "liberal" media.
2. I can no longer tolerate the use of derogatory and inflammatory language in regards to political figures. If you dislike someone's political views, find a way to express it without comparing them to Hitler. I managed to get through 8 years of George W. Bush without once referring to him as a fascist or as Hitler even though the thought crossed my mind every single day.
3. I am tired of the constant insinuation that having liberal political viewpoint makes me amoral, godless, America hating, etc.
4. It sucks all the fun out of BC when I have to be constantly on the look out for stumbling across some nasty political reference on a thread that is supposed to be about...kittens and sunshine.
I am asking ADMIN to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remove all political and religious threads from the main discussion boards.
If you feel the same way, please post a comment on this thread and send a shout to ADMIN!

I just got tired of seeing political and religious discussions on the main boards.
But having to read some moron's comments comparing Obama to Hitler was what killed it.
Hitler killed 6 million Jews and other "undesirables." Obama was a democratically elected president who is asking students to do some public service and volunteerism in exchange for financial aid for college.

Did they tell you to say that? -

Sorry if I ruffled feathers. I have been dissapointed with the way that the administration has been taking shape. After I read Rahm Emanuel's book after he was appointed--how he wanted compulsory service, and to restructure the UN into NATO, just seemingly to antagonize Russia into another Cold War, I've just soured on the whole "Hope" message. I'll leave you guys to kittens and rainbows now

LoL well put -
No reason to get worked up over the largely overstated liberal/conservative dichotomy.
From www.michaeljournal.org/myth2.htm
"Oliver knew that whoever controlled the nation's money, controlled the nation. But he knew also that to maintain that control, it was necessary to keep the people in a state of ignorance, and to distract them by a variety of means. Oliver had observed that of the five islanders, two were conservatives and three were liberals. That much had evolved from their evening conversations, especially after they had fallen into slavery. And between the conservatives and those who were liberals, there was a constant friction. On occasions, Harry, the most neutral of the five, considering that all had the same needs and aspirations, had suggested the union of the people to put pressure on the authorities. Such a union, Oliver could not tolerate; it would mean the end of his rule. No dictator, financial or otherwise, could stand before a people united and educated. Consequently, Oliver set himself to foment, as much as possible, political strife between them. The refugee put his press to work, turning out two weekly newspapers, “The Sun”, for the Liberals, and “The Star”, for the Conservatives. The general tenor of “The Sun” was: “If you are no longer master, it is because of those traitorous Conservatives who have sold out to big business.” That of “The Star”: “The ruinous state of business and the national debt can be traced directly to the political responsibility of those unmentionable Liberals.”
Further the Hitler analogy is not so far fetched. Those bankers et al who financed Hitler, are the same who financed the Bolsheviks, FDR, and his successors. See Anthony Sutton:

OMG! Put a cork in it, you fools! Who cares where people interested in politics put their posts? Who cares where people not interested in politics put their posts? Stop worrying about something that's just not worth worrying about. What, you have to click your mouses one or two more times? Is that what you care about? Please. It's much better to be able to communicate freely than to limit it, even if we have to tolerate morons, no matter how noble you think your motives are.

Hi there. It's been a long time since we have chatted.
You haven't been around BC much lately and in this last month the General Discussion forum has featured so many religious and political threads that many members don't post anymore. Here's the link to the political forum. During the Blog Catalog 5.0 upgrade the sidebar button was removed as it was no longer the correct size. www.blogcatalog.com/politics

I have been a little busy, timethief and getting a new ISP. On here I don't want to talk politics really - I prefer to do that on my blog.
If people want to go there and vent - they are most welcome.-
I'm keenly aware of your normalcy and I miss it.
Some folks here have the unique approach of using the forum as a pulpit and others use it as a soapbox. However, their networking approaches aren't working very well because every day they complain lack visitors and comments. Geez ... I wonder why, eh?

lol. I find it impossible to discuss or for the most part even Think about politics anymore, at least partly for the reasons stated in the OP.
otoh, I find threads about what a forum participant Doesn't want to read or hear anymore to be generally tiresome as well. then again, these boards have been pretty dull lately imho -
Personally, I think that's a wise policy, stillthinking. Religious and political discussions go absolutely nowhere; they are circular. No one every changes their minds and they usually divide people.
Every once in a while I get sucked in--but not often. Been there, done that on political forums until I realized it ain't that much fun to bang my head against a wall.-
I am just going to avoid political and religious discussion from now on, exactly for the reason you just stated. Everyone believes what they believe and nothing you say will change anyone. It just ends up riling me up and ruining my mood.
I get annoyed though that more and more of the discussions on the main board are political or religious in nature. -
OMG.
Before the election, I was so upset by the state of politics in this country, I would get into histrionic debates with anyone and everyone about why Bush was Satan. Of course,I didn't call him Satan (or any names for that matter because it just destroys your credibility in a debate by doing so).
I always considered myself a more left leaning, moderate. I tried to understand where the other guys were coming from, but as we got closer and closer to the election, I got madder and madder about the anxiety and paranoia that the RNC was trying to stoke in their base.
Now, I am done. I have had political heartburn for the past 8 years and now, I just want to take a TUMS and watch the sun stream in my windows for a while. I really wish the numb nuts would let Obama have more than 2 months in office before they start screaming conspiracy, commie, and death of America, but they won't.
So my solution is to just shut it off for a while.

I'm currently advocating the transformation of the existing political discussion board into a Hot Topics forum where the controversial religious and political topics can be housed together. If that idea is a go, then along with it I would like to see those same controversial topics banned from the General Discussion forum.
What say you to that idea?

Here in the General Discussion forum what I witness is what you just described.
At the present time political discussions can be posted to either the political forum or this one. We tend to get more reasoned and in depth political discussions in the political forum.
IMO transforming the political forum into a Hot Topics forum and including both religious and political threads there would be a good idea. This is why.
The only history being made on the General Discussion forum is the prolonged heated arguing between the same religious and politically entrenched minority of BC members.
The historical fallout in the General Discussion forum has been the ill will that the politically and religiously entrenched and the rationally challenged have created. That's ironic because what we are supposedly here for is to build community on the General Discussion forum and what I see happening is quite the opposite.
BTW I'm not claiming the high ground here as I enter both types of threads frequently. It's my opinion that a Hot Topics forum is worth consideration. -
@SiuilARuin
I'm sorry about the cliff hanger ... I multitask and the because you refer to was left hanging as I had to answer the phone and provide the invoicing and shipping information required.
I don't know what you mean by hand-in-hand. What I am suggesting is that threads with religious topics and political topics would be posted into separate threads just as they are in the General Discussion forum now, except that they would be located in the Hot Topics forum, which is currently referred to as the political forum.
Otherwise the political discussions will be swamped by people who aren't interested in politics and don't know anything about the topic but feel like weighing in anyway BAD IDEA
Also with due respect to your POV, there is no political or religious intelligentsia at BC. Any member can currently post into any thread they choose to post into, and I'm not proposing that that be changed. -
yep...I think that's exactly what will happen. I don't want people quoting bits of the bible in a political discussion and then have the discussion turn into one about the merits of biblical wisdom...and that's what will happen if you lump them together. The religious discussions will completely overshadow the political ones and the political discussions that turn out to be as popular as the religious ones will no doubt have fights in them.
I don't see why religious discussions can't have a separate discussion board. If the admins would put up a clear link to a religious board and a politics board then the politics would be more active and wouldn't feel superfluous.
