I'm kind of new at it too, but the way I understand it...
You just agree to exchange links between two people and you each put up a link to the other person's site on your blog or webpage.
They can be links, banners, pictures or can even shared articles with their link attached to their blog/web page.
It just helps generate traffic.
Good idea!
That's what the Blogrolls are for.
You'll see that term a lot. It's just a list of links to blogs you like.
Helps everyone in the long run.
Did that help? -
yeah it helped, but also, is it just to generate traffic only or is it going to increase your blog's worth?

Well...if you're able to generate a substantial following and have a lot of people come to your site through these links, then you can charge people more for advertising on your site (just because there's regular amounts of people there).
There are people that get 1,000's of people visiting their site every day (sometimes much more than that), but that is usually generated from search engines and RSS feeds. You learn this stuff as you go along. There's plenty of people here that can help you with it.
Link exchanges are a small percentage of your actual traffic, but it's always a good idea to promote others. However small, it still makes a difference over the long run.

Link exchanges are bad, bad things. You want relevant links, not just any links, or Google is going to hit you when it calculates page rank. I link to blogs that are interesting and relevant. Often they link back, because the feeling is mutual, but there's no one-for-one exchange involved.
You can find out more by searching for related threads here. One term to look for is backlinks.
