A thread here the other day, containing questions about StumbleUpon and how it works, prompted me to think how much that particular social media is like the show "Heroes"-- or if you want to use the way-back machine, Twin Peaks or the X-Files...

No matter how long you follow it, you still can't quite figure out what the heck it's all about...

So, by way of discussion, what mystifies you about StumbleUpon?

Do you use it, or not?

Or have you pretty much got it down to a science?

I looked into StumbleUpon some a while back, and I got a vague idea what it was about and how it worked. But it looks like something you have to really get into to really get any use out of. You can't just dabble in it.

You're right in that. I know when I was Stumbling things for a few minutes every day I'd had a lot more momentum. Now, when it's hit or miss (mostly miss) not so much.

Of course, unlike Heroes, I can't just Netflix it all at one shot either.

Stumbleupon, I do have an account. I don't use it though. It's like Bullgrit says, it does look like something you have to really get into, to see the benefits of it.

I'll have a look at your post ^_^!

Haha that was very cool! I like the comparison with Heroes! I post a comment later, I'm behind my laptop and for some reason I can't post comments -_-'. I'm going behind the PC later.

      Thanks, TJ.

And I know StumbleUpon has changed some of its criteria not that long ago, because folks were gaming it. So that may have affected peoples' experience with it, too.

I have used it pretty consistently over the years, by tagging things appropriately I have found it easier to keep track of things and use it more like a social bookmark type thing.

I have no idea why certain articles seem to get hit with stumbly magic.

Yes, it does work well as a bookmarker of sorts. I've also found some really amazing new artists that way-- which I love.

There have been discussions that StumbleUpon was at one point not giving the Stumbly Magic to sites one person stumbled different pages of "too many times."

Which seems odd, as most of us only go to a certain amount of sites as part of a routine. Multiple stumbles there wouldn't necessarily be gaming as much as an "I like this type of content."

But who knows if that's even how it works?

It is only lately I am using it more like a bookmark thing, mainly because it is more integrated with friend feed and twitter now, so easier to share. Also it appears in your BC dashboard thing too.

I think you are right about multiple thumbs = stumbly magic thumbs down, which is daft.

I wouldn't stumble anything that I thought was crud.

I guess folks have in the past, as part of Stumble group schemes. But those, I've heard, have gotten broken up pretty quickly-- banning and whatnot.
