Just came back from the store, where I heard the name Obama used as a negative for the second time since the inaguration.

The first time, a white woman refered to a black man as "Another damn Obama"

And today, a Black man said that someone else who apparently had too many white friends was an "Obama"

I kinda expected something to be done with it, I never expected both sides to use the same slur.

Do you think this is a passing fad, or will it catch on as the new slur.

I clearly lead a sheltered life. My fervent hope is that the idiots who say those things will get the sort of scorn they deserve and the fad will pass quickly.

Well I live in a very strange neighborhood with regards to the socioeconomic mix..

I'm less than two blocks from just about any variety that you can imagine. (except Inuits)

I don't know, does anyone say "Man that's just another King..."? Or anything of that nature?

I guess if I were a black person, and I had just been compared to a man who raised himself and his family up to the height of becoming president of the US, had a Harvard Law degree, was president of the law review, and could give a speech like a mofo...I'd be pretty flattered.

    Just sayin'.
    1. csiunatc
Well that certainly wasn't the intention of the statement. As far as I could tell. Then again, could have been a cultural glitch that I missunderstood.
    2. Anok
Well I'm certain it wasn't the intent - judging by your reaction I'd say thet one etc...gave it away that it was supposed to be an insult. But it isn't a very good insult, don't you think?

That's like saying - Oh, it's just another Pavarotti.

      Or, Pfft, ugh, another Michelangelo.

      Or, hey, you pink donkeh!

      Or, *sigh* another Mother Theresa...

I mean, I'm sure someone would be offended by it - but honestly....
    3. csiunatc
I guess you had to hear the inflection.

And yes, I'm sure that used the "right" way, both Michelangelo and Mother Teresa can be used as an insult.
    4. Anok
Right, anything can be used as an insult, but it's only really insulting if you either hate what the word represents, or are dumb, or it is a long standing word or phrase specifically designed to devalue or disenfranchise an entire group of people.

Like, I call you a capitalist with a total sneer - but to you, that's not really an insult
    5. Ajah
      Damn right Anok!!
I'd rather be another Obama any day than a Bush, a Palin, A Mccain or Joe, lol!

As long as there's ingorance, this won't be a "passing fad."

So it'll be around for a LOOONNNGGG time.
  4. ArsenicCookies
I think it will catch on because I have heard it so far in 3 different states (PA- North, GA-South, NV) and it's catchy and has multiple meanings, it can be racial, or I have heard it used to describe someone as arrogant, also used for fake people, and I have seen it replace the ever popular "douche". I kind of figured it would happen because though 60% of people supported him, I think the others forgot about the 40% that didn't. His election brought out a lot of the worst in everybody despite it "hopeful" image.
  5. HollytheHousewife
It's gonna catch on. One of my best friends (who is mixed)sent me a text saying they are hireing at the whitehouse for house keepin. Only white folk need to apply.
  6. cmgamble
I think this ignorance will continue for some time. I thought we were past this.
  7. HollytheHousewife
I did to. like i've said in countless other threads as long as there is a planet earth, then we are gonna have hate, biggotry, racism, and prejudice.

I say we sell Florida to pay down the debt. (csi lives in Florida)
    1. clioandme
We could sell it to Sweden. They might have the technology to tow it up to the Baltic Sea too.

The part the media keeps hidden from everyone is that he is half white also. I would bet the majority of people don't even know that. This was done probably because they didn't want some people saying he was not 100% black since he is the first President that is not white. You gotta love the media today.

You actually have to go online to find things out about people. The media can no longer be trusted in anything anymore. Those days are long gone.
    1. drjay1966
Ummm...actually, everybody knows that. It hasn't been hidden at all.

Maybe you should bring up another topic. Might I suggest: "why is the media hiding the fact that Ellen Degeneris is a lesbian?" or "why is the media hiding the fact that Madonna isn't really a virgin?"

As for why someone with a white parent is referred to as black, you might want to learn something about the history of race in America. Start by googling "one drop rule."
    2. sensico
ROFLMAO...........at the first part of drjay's comment and at the fact that mike just got hoed
    3. clioandme
Why is the media hiding the fact that John Lennon is dead? Why did the media never reveal that Keith Richards has a high chemical content in his body?
  11. mikeny07
Was a poll done to see if everyone knows that? If you don't go online and read about it, how would anyone know it?

I have never seen it mentioned on TV. I had the news channels on 24/7 during the elections.
    1. sensico
um...yeah I always had the 24/7 cable news shows on and they always mentioned that when appropriate. If you're a FOX News watcher then maybe you should consider some of the other new stations and you probably would have had a more fair assessment of what Obama.
  12. mikeny07
But sensico, people were saying he was a Muslim for a long time also. That proves my point that nobody knew his background.

The guy was never veted by the media during the election. Nobody knew much about him. Palin was veted a thousand times more and she was not even running for President. The media wanted Obama to win the election that is why.
    1. sensico
Only around 10% thought he might have been a muslim, and based on my archive of the muslim haters they were all at the Palin rallies sensico.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/palinmccain-rallies-breeding-ground-for-ra...

He was vetted more then Palin. People wanted to know more about Palin and thats the medias job its not any of our fault that she couldn't conduct a good interview without Sean Hannity to talk about maverick-ness
    2. drjay1966
That's ridiculous--he was as much vetted as anyone else.

And only bigots and complete ignoramuses (encouraged by FOX) thought he was a Muslim.

Apparently, the right wing media you pay attention to provides a bogus version of the news, but that's also not news to anybody.

Your side lost. Get over it.
    3. Ajah
Is there anything wrong with being Muslim?????
  13. mikeny07
But the other channels are all left wing. So why is that ok? I hope you are against those also. I think out of all the channels, FOX is the most fair. You can find out things nobody will report on the other networks.

My side lost. But before everyone brags about Obama, lets see what he does after 4 years.
    1. sensico
apparently they dont report on what Obama's actual race is cause you was oblivious to that and had to go on the internet to find out
    2. drjay1966
Sorry, Mike, I didn't get that you were doing a Colbert-type satire of conservatives thing here until you talked about how all the networks are left wing and FOX is the most fair. Good one.

And let's see what Obama does in 4 years" as if he's not dealing with a country practically destroyed by Bush/Cheney! Oh, man, you're good!
  14. mikeny07
I gotta go. Political stuff is geting boring after this long election.

    I will leave with this.

    Palin in 2012!!
    1. sensico
she better run in 2012 shes crazy and provides great entertainment, and I can't wait who she puts on her ticket since we know the the republicans will nominate her...
      Sarah Palin-plumber-2012
    2. drjay1966
      Oh yes! Palin 2012!

She'll be the Walter Mondale of the Republican Party!
  15. siralmo
i think it is change... and that is the only way people can deal with it
  16. lnclark1950
Both titles are offensive and do not apply to President Obama. The majority of whites and blacks have grown beyond choosing either of those words. Mr. Obama is a socialist and it is he who will place those titles on his people if they do not support him. Those whites who do not support him will be separated just as he is trying to do with Rush Limbaugh www.rushlimbaugh.com.

President Obama is a smart man but not a very wise one. He is an elitist and he will do anything to get his agenda accomplished. People who make statements such as I have could face some serious consequences if he gets his super majority in the congress.
  17. PussDaddy
It doesn't suprise me. Being white, I can tell you that white people make up a great percentage of the stupidest people on earth.
    1. HollytheHousewife
      @ puss
I am sorry you weren't born black. You don't have to take it out on the entire white race though. I think you need to have a talk with your mom, over that mistake.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. -- Albert Einstein

      Stupidity has no color barriers.
  18. PussDaddy
And being interracially married, I can tell you that black people have their own moments of stupidity.
    1. Ajah
people (in general) do. Race has nothing to do with it.
    2. sensico
LOL, I can definitely relate, on more then one level, but the point is that humans in general have stupid moments, except me cause Im a princess/warrior princess

    @csiunatc;
I've never heard this! What city or country do you live in? I hope this doesn't catch on in the USA! This is sad.

The White Christian Fundies will no doubt use it as such. They just can't seem to help themselves.

    Ahh, religion...

Here's what I think if it:
Religion is most like a computer virus for brains. It comes complete with instructions for development and propagation of the virus, and code that prevents the person from deleting it or noticing that it doesn't conform to reality. It is orchestrated, organized, and officially sanctioned psychosis, made easily digestible and palatable to the masses.

Learn to think before you learn to believe, or you’ll soon believe that you don’t have to think.
