Wordpress have just released the eagerly awaited 2.7 update in Beta, with a full launch expected at the end of the month.

This release sees a major restructure of the admin layout. I've just installed it and testing it as we speak.

Who else has downloaded it? What are your thoughts? Like it, dislike it?

How is it working for you? What new features are there? I usually wait to upgrade until I hear how it's working and if it's really anything I need to do right away.

This will work on MAC yes

The major change is the redesign of the admin area. I've used it today and love it. It may be worth waiting for the full release at the end of the month incase any bugs are found during this beta release.

When it comes to upgrades, I am NOT ever and early adopter so I have no feedback of my own to share.

As always, TT has provided us some great links concerning this new WP version. I just checked out the demo which is a great way to see the changes. I see that the "Add a Post" has many more tools on the toolbar such as text colors now. One thing I was wondering about is Gears. Is anyone using it? If so, did you see an improvement in WP use and speed?

Thanks TT, a great comment and addition to the discussion

I'm using gears, but I haven't noticed an appreciable gain...

Then the way I blog is usually with several tabs open moving back and forth, so the gains may be there and I just don't notice them because I'm off on another tab.

I'll wait until the official release, but I'm definitely interested.

    omg - it's so different. I hate change. I'm still using 2.5.1

And I've never upgraded - just thinking of doing it gives me a headache. I wish it were as easy as just clicking one button and *wham* - you're upgraded. Anything other than that, and I'm scared to death I'll screw something up.

And I've never known when a good time is to upgrade. By the time one version seems safe by everyone, a new version is out.

I might just not upgrade at all until/unless TT does and then just wail and cry and beg her to hold my virtual hand if I actually do it.

Not upgrading is a dangerous option.

Using 2.5.1 means that there are several exploits that hijackers can use to turn your blog into a phishing site.

      Great point @DaneMorgan

      What Dane said.

What kind of vulnerabilities should we be aware of for those running an out-of-date version of WP?
    5. CreativeJunkie
ok - now I'm almost hyperventilating because I'm getting freaked out. Should I at least upgrade to 2.6.3?
    6. DaneMorgan
      I would strongly urge that.

There is no need to upgrade to a beta or a release candidate. But when WP say's here's a new version available, you should upgrade. I don't think there has been a release that did not contain security fixes in a couple of years now.
    7. thefloatingfrog
2.6.3 sounds an ideal interim upgrade, the 2.7 full release should be available in a few weeks. Thanks Dane for the info.

Beta is really for people who want to thoroughly test it before general release and report back with the bugs they have found. This way when it's time for the full release it should be a much stabler platform for the wordpress users to use.

    I'd certainly suggest waiting
